Increasingly, the role of librarians in higher education is shifting from primarily librarian-as-expert to include librarian-as-educator (Holt, 2002). As a result, academic librarians with a wide variety of job titles are finding themselves contributing to the instructional services of their library (Hall, 2013). Even those librarians who have instruction as a principal responsibility may have little to no training or experience in instruction when they begin teaching students in one-shot or credit-bearing instruction situations. In a recent study of employer’s expectations for library instruction training, nearly 90 percent of respondents found instruction to be important to their library (Hall, 2013). …

While cloud computing is not new, cloud-based services have matured and become more prevalent, thereby offering a range of new technology tools for libraries. Cloud computing technologies, and in particular those designed for end-users, present librarians with varying technology proficiencies the ability to access and use technologies - and related services - that might otherwise be beyond their reach. As cloud computing becomes more of a mainstay, many librarians are considering new ways to use these third-party tools in their work.

While there have been a number of articles written about the need to provide mobile services for users, most have focused on large institutions. The authors, both librarians, wanted to find out how patrons of Houston Cole Library at Jacksonville State University (JSU), a small regional university, are using mobile devices and what mobile services they want or expect from the library. The possibility of finding the answers to these and other questions initiated the authors’ interest in surveying JSU students about their mobile device use. Julius Rosenwald: A Review Of The Literature On His Motivations And Impact In Redefining Library Service In The South, Patrick Roughen

This literature review also explores the influences in Julius Rosenwald’s life that inspired his philanthropic efforts. It could be said that Rosenwald’s generosity can be explained by his Jewish background; he was born a member of a group for whom discrimination and persecution had long tempered a sympathy for the oppressed. In his adult life, Rosenwald was imbued with the social justice teachings of famous Reform Rabbi Emil Hirsch (1851-1973), who ministered to him for many years at the Chicago Sinai Congregation (Ascoli, 2006). In the past, the library scavenger hunt was thought of as a well-respected and effective method of library or information literacy instruction; however, the scavenger hunt’s glory days are over. Indeed, many academic librarians decry these hunts, often assigned by general education teaching faculty, as a waste of time or worse as a “turn off” for students from the library (Kearns 2006, Miller 2009). These despised scavenger hunts require students to wander around the library recording colors of books, asking inane questions to library staff, and using outdated or often unavailable resources. Freedom Libraries were originally a product of ‘Freedom Summer’—the voting registration campaign launched by various civil rights organizations in Mississippi during the summer of 1964. Information about these libraries has been extremely limited, so much so that their very existence remains “virtually unknown even within the American library community” (Cook 3). This changed in 2008, when Karen Cook’s dissertation provided a comprehensive and exhaustive look at Mississippi Freedom Libraries. She positively identified over 80 different ones. While reading Cook’s work, I began to wonder if something similar had occurred in Alabama. After all, Alabama was ground zero during the Civil …
