Librarians are confronting a shift in media that is changing the structure and the collections of libraries as well as the meaning of librarianship itself. The heart of this essay suggests that the physical book maybe considered an enduring communication vessel. If the goal of the library is to offer access to the cultural record, then physical books as a social record embodying “bookness” hold a place within the library institution as a material expression of the intimate and enduring relationship between human and book.

What can librarians do to earn or enhance their roles as trusted professionals both inside and outside of the library? Nine practical action steps are suggested, including continued learning, participation in professional organizations, upholding the ethical boundaries of the profession, marketing professional credentials, dealing with stereotypes, giving attention to communication and appearances, and protecting margins for self-care.

While the primary responsibility of academic libraries is to support the students, staff, and faculty of the college or university that hosts them, most academic libraries offer access and services to patrons without official ties to the campus. Academic librarians often experience the tension between a professional desire to provide full access and services to all information seekers and the reality of limited time and resources. Previous studies have described services offered by academic libraries to unaffiliated patrons, but no study has focused exclusively on academic libraries whose host institutions are faith-based. As the development of digital libraries increases, the growth has been accompanied by a refinement of evaluation criteria and methods. Evaluators are increasingly aware that the context of digital library usage (the social, cultural, academic, and institutional environments of the users) is an essential consideration of effective assessment. This article evaluates the Perseus Digital Library through the needs and objectives of a specific learning community – those engaged in theological research. After a review of relevant literature, a rationale is given for ranking ten key facets of digital library evaluation by order of importance. These criteria are then applied to …

In 2007, Calumet College of Saint Joseph decided to start a University Archives with the intention of preserving their institutional history. In 2009, they added the Bishop Andrew Grutka papers, with the intention of using this collection as the keystone for the archives. While this project had plenty of spiritual support, the institution failed to realize a few key concepts, such as funding, staffing, and what an archive does for a university. They also failed to see what makes an archive an archive. In the end, the archives were only around for about 5 years before being packed into the …

This article reports on a library-wide assessment project at Spring Arbor University’s White Library. It highlights the methods used to assess each element, along with a recap of the findings, and a section covering the successes and caveats. The library’s website was evaluated using a focus group strategy where users completed a set of tasks using the website. The physical space was evaluated using a whiteboard approach. The freshman research instruction program at the White Library consists of one and two shot library sessions. The current teaching approach was assessed using “muddiest point cards”along with surveys.

This practice-oriented article outlines one institution’s process of implementing both electronic checkout and a new integrated library system (ILS) for an academic library of 187,000 physical items. Special attention is given to the need for background research, administrative buy-in, and project management. Lessons learned and recommendations conclude the article.

This article describes an unconference session at the most recent Association of Christian Librarians Annual Conference 2017. The session attendees worked together to produce sample lesson plans, using the “backwards design planning structure” introduced by Wiggins & McTighe in Understanding by Design. This research article studies the information seeking search strategies used by theological faculty members in Tamil Nadu. It is based on a structured questionnaire sent to 120 select faculty members, of which 101 questionnaires were returned, achieving a response rate of 84%. Major findings of this study contribute to understanding the awareness and use of search options among respondents. Basic and keyword search options are commonly used by respondents in online sources while preferences for references from books and journals are more popular among faculty members to locate bibliographic information in print sources. This essay will address the histories of four major publishing companies in Grand Rapids: Zondervan, Baker, Eerdmans, and Kregel. These publishing companies, through their individual and interwoven histories have shaped and sustained the publishing industry in the Midwest, and Grand Rapids in particular. These publishing houses are significant to the history of books and publishing because, for roughly a century, these publishing houses have been producing Bibles and other evangelical materials that are educating people the world over, from the youngest Sunday school pupils to the oldest seminarian.
