Recruit, Recruit, Recruit: Organizing Benefits For Employees With Unmarried Families, Polly Thistlethwaite

This article argues that librarians should work to adopt domestic partner benefits for employees in unmarried same- and opposite-sex couples given the inequities in compensation manifest in their absence. It provides new information about the domestic partner practices of Tier 1 and Tier 2 institutions based on a spring/fall 2000 telephone survey. The article includes an outline of actions to institute domestic partner benefits in university settings.

Librarians and teaching faculty often have different perceptions of the roles of the library and the librarian in undergraduate education. A study surveying six community colleges reveals that there is much room for improvement in the interrelationship between librarians and teaching faculty. More effective communication and mutual respect would enhance the educational experience for students and provide a richer learning environment.

The transition from working in either a special library or corporate information center to an academic library requires some adjustments. The least adjustment is the change from chemical information specialist to chemistry librarian in a dedicated chemistry library primarily used by advanced chemistry students and chemistry faculty. This article traces the founding of the Lesbian Herstory Archives in the context of radical archiving and lesbian institution building. It includes an outline of problems presented by "extra-legal" or outlaw material in archival settings. Discussion of the New York Public Library's Becoming Visible exhibit reflects the 1990s growth of mainstream institutional interest in gay, lesbian, and transgender archives, and the complications this interest presents.

As World War I came to an end, the borders in Central and Eastern Europe were tenuous, and in some cases non-existent, and several countries came into territorial conflict. The battle between Poland and the Soviet Union was a pivotal event in twentieth century history, as Poland not only dealt the Red Army its first defeat, but also greatly expanded the territory of the fledgling Polish Republic to its historic, pre-partition borders.

A Response To Mark Weber, John A. Drobnicki

Mark Weber, who at the time was both the editor of the Journal of Historical Review and the Director of the Institute for Historical Review, wrote a letter to the editor of Public & Access Services Quarterly objecting to a 1995 article written by John Drobnicki, Carol Goldman, Trina Knight, and Johanna Thomas ("Holocaust-Denial Literature in Public Libraries: An Investigation of Public Librarians’ Attitudes Regarding Acquisition and Access"). Drobnicki wrote a detailed response, which not only refutes the claims of Mr. Weber, but which also demonstrates how Holocaust "revisionists" often make claims which do not hold up.
