A committee comprised of seven Research and Instruction Librarians at Grand Valley State University met to analyze, evaluate, and recommend changes to a newly-implemented librarian instruction evaluation form. Prior to the creation of this form, instruction assessment forms were used on an individual, ad hoc basis for personal self-evaluation. In 2010, there was a grassroots effort to trial a standardized form, but it did not result in widespread adoption among teaching librarians beyond the duration of the project.

Current practices for library outreach to international students includes an orientation at the beginning of each semester, individual consultations with librarians (initiated by the student), and University Libraries representation on a newly-formed globalization task force. The results of this study are intended to better inform the task force, and guide the formation of new materials and practices specifically tailored for the needs of international and L2 library users.

Open Education Resources: Collecting, Promoting, And Managing Oer In An Institutional Repository, Sarah Beaubien

Open Education Resources (OER) are digital materials used for educational purposes that are intentionally made available to the public. An increasing number of university faculty create and use such resources in their teaching. Partnering with the creators of OER is an excellent way to gather high-quality, unique content for the repository while helping to fulfill the goal of making OER widely available. This session will introduce considerations regarding the value and process of building an OER collection in the repository.

Universal Citation In Sixty Seconds, Anne Burnett

A large format infographic describing the system for citation which permits reference to legal or law-related information in any medium without requiring reference to proprietary products. Includes a timeline of the Universal Citation Guide from 1993 to 2012, citation elements, a list of states and territories that adopted the practice and an interactive QR code for accessing AALL's page on this citation format. The poster also encouraged viewers to advocate for adopting Universal citation with judges, attorneys and legislators.

Engineering South Of The Border: A Librarian’S Experience In Nicaragua, Debbie Morrow

I will spend the first half of May’12 in Estelí, Nicaragua, as a volunteer member of a project to teach product innovation and development skills to students and faculty of the Nicaraguan national university system. The two leaders, Engineering and Business faculty members from GVSU, require no special expertise or language skills for volunteers, but are excited at the prospect of having a library professional among the support group in this year’s seventh annual iteration of the program. I look forward to sharing what I learn about engineering and academics in a culture eager to develop.

Over the past decade technological advances and changes in the scholarly publishing environment have ushered in an era of unprecedented change for academic libraries. Financial pressures, the rise of online content, and the ability to easily share and distribute materials are driving libraries to reexamine many of their practices and priorities. This presentation will explore how libraries are moving from traditional models of collection develop toward a new future where the focus is on curating access to information and on supporting the production and dissemination of scholarly resources.
