Connections In Information Literacy Responses: Il In The Undergraduate University Experience, Elizabeth H. Brown, Lauren Wittek, Mattias Olshausen

This study was conducted at a four-year state university to compare differences in information literacy knowledge between students at the first-year, sophomore, junior, and senior levels. The survey included questions about reading habits, library usage, and information literacy knowledge, and was shared with 10,967 students with a 15.7% response rate. Analysis of the responses found reduced participation from sophomores, a positive relationship between required course use of the library and actual use of the library, a positive relationship between library exposure and accuracy of responses, and other academic connections to information skills.

Migrations are never easy, but they can provide great opportunities for growth and positive change. In migrating from Aleph to Alma, the Binghamton University Libraries found that while Aleph did many things, Alma has allowed us to understand how we can integrate existing functionalities that were known in Aleph but not easily taken advantage of. Some of these functionalities have let us automate processes; these include ordering API's with GOBI and Proquest; Invoicing for GOBI, Proquest, EBSCO; and now MARC record delivery with OCLC Cataloging partners. This article explores the move of the Central Washington University Archives and Special Collections (CWUASC) to a new location from the fourth floor to the second floor of the James E. Brooks Library in 2018. The history of the CWUASC, reasons for the move, the planning and designing of the new space, the actual move of the collection by the archives staff, lessons learned, and the impact of the move in reaching a larger audience of faculty, staff, students, and the general public are described. A review of literature on other moves of archives and special collections is also provided.

Lockdown Lemonade: Successful Remote Projects, Donica Swann

When the COVID-19 pandemic forced the closure of libraries and archives, many archives professionals assumed that working remotely afforded them limited opportunities to effectively do their jobs. These intrepid archivists pivoted, and used the lockdown as an opportunity to pursue projects they always wanted to undertake but never had time to pursue. Donica Swann will discuss managing a remote project conducted by non-Archives staff members that included transcription of 50 oral histories and the digitization of 100 more, while simultaneously supervising Archives staff’s efforts to create more digital content for users.

The LibRAT Program at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo was first piloted in 2010. Although the program has expanded in scope and depth, the key to its continued success has been a commitment to core principles discovered during its initial launch. To this day, the LibRATs (Library Reference Assistance Technicians) form a small cadre of intensively trained students who are treated with respect as adults and as undergraduates. Communication, learning, and responsibility are multidirectional, and the LibRATs are full partners in the success of the program.

Drawing on personal memory, detailed mapping, and archival research, this memoir explores the lived experience of growing up in Seattle’s Madrona neighborhood in the 1960s and early 1970s. A neighborhood historically characterized as both integrated and segregated, this book grapples directly with the truth of both statements. The author’s childhood was spent on a street where neighbors across the street were nearly all White, while neighbors astride the alley behind were nearly all Black. The lines of friendship and community interaction, however, were not so neatly defined, and changed markedly over time.

Rice share the 2020 Nobel in Physiology or Medicine for their contributions to the identification, treatment, and eventual elimination of the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Purpose

This study aims to describe a project that aims to give students a choice to complete their general education requirements without purchasing a textbook.

Design/methodology/approach

In total, 26 faculty, teaching in the new general education curriculum, at Central Washington University were given stipends to eliminate expensive textbooks and use free to the student resources such as open educational resources (OER) or library resources. The data was collected on student savings and student and faculty satisfaction with the program.

Findings

Many paths were created through the general education curriculum, so a student may easily finish these requirements without purchasing a …

California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) is one of the 23 campuses within the California State system. It is a four-year, public university, emphasizing comprehensive undergraduate education with a total enrollment of ~20,000 undergraduate and graduate students (96% undergraduate). Teaching and scholarship are both required by faculty but with limited research support services. A survey of faculty research data services needs was conducted in 2012. Survey invitations were emailed to a stratified random sample of 449 faculty (tenure-track or tenured assistant, associate and full professors only) and 226 responded for an overall response rate of 50%. Gregg L. Semenza, William G Kaelin, Jr, and Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe were awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine on October 7, 2019. Their work led to the understanding of how cells recognize and adapt to varying oxygen levels. Hypoxia-inducible nuclear factors play an essential role in this mechanism by turning on other genes that work towards increasing oxygen levels in hypoxic environments. Other vital pieces of the machinery include von Hippel-Lindau proteins and prolyl hydroxylation. The content is evidence-based with the aim of being as objective and unbiased as possible, and monographs in the database include references for the information provided (Natural Medicines 2019a). It is a fee-based subscription product, but pricing is generally fair and it can be bundled with other resources of interest. The purpose of the article is to demonstrate how Binghamton University Libraries has changed the workflows and channels of communication between Special Collections and the Technical Services Department. Over the last two years these departments have worked to foster cooperative decision making in order to increase understanding of project priorities and allow for more efficient cataloging, leading to greater accessibility of Special Collections items. The article also looks at how this relationship can be expanded upon in the future, so that cataloging/metadata librarians and Special Collections staff and librarians can work together to create better access to materials.

In an ideal world, citation management tools save researchers time by keeping content organized and automating rote tasks, a feat made possible by technological progress and a common set of workflows and habits of mind shared by all researchers. Unfortunately, we don’t live in an ideal world. Instead, we live in a world where citation management tools are prone to error, and a wide gulf separates the practices of novice researchers from those of expert researchers. Analysis For Science Librarians Of The 2018 Nobel Prize In Physiology Or Medicine: The Life And Work Of James P. Allison And Tasuku Honjo, Neyda V. Gilman

On October 1, 2018, James P. Allison and Tasuku Honjo were awarded the 2018 Physiology or Medicine Nobel for their work leading to Immune Checkpoint Inhibition (ICI). ICI is the fourth pillar of cancer treatment and has been used to treat previously un-treatable cancers. Allison discovered that the protein CTLA-4 acts as a T cell brake while Honjo discovered another T cell brake, PD-1. Releasing these brakes allows the immune system to attack tumors, sometimes leading to complete elimination. While there is still more research to be done, Allison’s and Honjo’s work is a breakthrough in cancer immunotherapy.
