Teaching Information Evaluation And Critical Thinking Skills In Physics Classes, Adriana Popescu, James Morgan

Library Scholarship

The physics curriculum at all educational levels can be enriched to include tools for strengthening students' information evaluation skills. The Report of the Joint APS-AAPT Task Force on Graduate Education in Physics calls for such training to be part of graduate programs, but training to acquire these lifetime skills can be incorporated in the curriculum even before graduate level.

One of the challenges of integrating research activities into the biology curriculum is conveying to students the importance of using the scientific literature to situate their question into the larger framework of scientific knowledge. Consulting the literature and synthesizing information from it is a critical component of the research process, yet it remains difficult to get students to do this using appropriate sources. The Julia Morgan Architectural Archives project concluded under budget and on time on April 30, 2007.

The two-year project’s goals were to arrange and describe the Julia Morgan and Sara Boutelle collections according to national standards for architectural archives; create EAD-encoded finding aids delivered via the Online Archives of California; create MARC catalog records for the collections; and create a digital image database of 750 images from the collections.

At the project’s conclusion, 291 linear feet of materials were processed and a total of 142 linear feet of boxed material were retained. Thirty-one flat files of drawings and plans were …

Urban planning and librarianship are parallel fields in many ways. Both have theoretical and practical underpinnings driving each discipline; are interdisciplinary in focus; and both professions gather and disseminate information to stakeholders. Essential to the success of each discipline is an engaged user population. The authors use a case study from the Village of Oak Park to examine and reflect upon the effect of the Internet and other technologies in the public's ability to participate in an open planning process. Binghamton University Libraries implemented an IM reference service using the Trillian client to monitor multiple IM accounts at two distinct reference service points. This paper addresses the process and practical considerations of implementing the service including selection of the appropriate software, creation of IM accounts for each service, development of a staffing schedule, and training of reference staff. Also included is an outline of future plans for improving IM services for students and academic library users.

Undergraduate students currently enrolled in US universities represent the first generations to grow up with the digital technologies developed and disseminated in the last decades of the 20th century. This paper will review the findings from a research project concluded in 2004, which had the primary goal of learning more about the natural behaviors of people choosing materials for inclusion in a digital archive. Project participants, retiring faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill had a number of tasks to perform. They had to 1) survey and choose the materials to include in the archive; 2) develop a “collection development plan” defining the nature of their materials, their intended audience, and the organizational scheme of their collection; 3) provide materials for digitization; 4) supply metadata for …

This study explores historical and linguistic aspects of Rabelais’ invented catalog for the Library of the Abbey of St. Victor. Contrasting the fictional catalog with an actual catalog of St. Victor’s, it examines why this Abbey was such an apt target, and shows ways in which Rabelais’ catalog explodes concerted efforts by influential scholastics associated with St. Victor’s to corral knowledge into classified schemes. It further offers a linguistic analysis of Rabelais’ mocking of the convention of titling, whose importance had surged with the arrival of mechanized printing. Many librarians question the usefulness of the traditional cataloging of difficult historic sets in a time when more and more information moves either to the Internet or is digitized outright. One of the most challenging sets to catalog is the United States Congressional Serial Set, a 14,000+ (and growing) mega serial comprised of five monographic sub-series. The Congressional Serial Set is an anomaly since it is both monographic and serial in nature. Avoiding The Golden Fleece: Licensing Agreements For Archives, Nancy E. Loe

The need to negotiate licenses protecting the rights to intellectual property in archives is an emerging and complex area. This article provides archivists with a better understanding of the legal and economic issues arising from commercial requests for archival materials, examining five key areas relating to licensing: the technology, the players, the economics, the rights and the consequences. The article presents guidelines, strategies, and a sample licensing agreement to help archivists make informed decisions about whether and on what terms to license materials from their collections for commercial use.

This proposal describes the significance and depth of scholarship afforded by Special Collections Department of the Robert E. Keeping The Citizenry Informed: Early Congressional Printing And 21st Century Information Policy, Aimée C. Quinn

Although the electronic revolution in publishing fostered a new Information Age, the need for government documents in tangible format continues. This paper examines the historical roots of congressional printing compared to 21st century challenges to information policy. The author argues that the founding fathers intentionally did not include language mandating the printing of government information, aside from the Journal as described in the Constitution, for the simple reason that they viewed it as an inherent obligation on the part of all elected officials. As such, restrictive information policies, such as the U.S.A. Patriot Act, impinge upon the original intent of …

An enriched syllabus has been experimentally introduced to undergraduate level students enrolled in a geotechnical engineering course. Two research assignments have been integrated in the course, which require students to find information on a geotechnical engineering topic using both print and electronic resources available at the university library and on the Internet. Aiming to foster the development of technical information literacy and communication skills, the students are required to prepare a report based on a specific set of guidelines, followed by oral presentations of the topics researched.
