In an article investigating how librarians are depicted in the mass media, Maura Seale identifies five categories into which the majority of representations fall: the old maid, the policeman, the parody, the inept librarian, and the hero/ine. Unlike prior representations of librarians in mass media, however, which have been largely controlled by non-librarians, the increased opportunities for amateur video distribution on sites like YouTube have allowed librarians themselves to decide how they are portrayed. This article considers online videos in the context of theories about stereotypes, and it discusses the effects of parody in shaping perceptions of the librarian profession. …

This article discusses the meaning of the term "policy," along with general aspects of policies that might apply to many nations. Of particular concern is the placement of library- and information-oriented policies within a larger context. Literature on information policy is reviewed with the goal of devising a framework for discussing the national goals of policy. Examples from the United States are used to illustrate policy-making. Finally, some trends affecting policy are examined.

Geoffrey Chaucer (c. 1342 – 1400) is the great medieval inventor of words for the English language, words including “library.” He uses that term to represent a distinct spatial home that is organized with skill to find knowledge from the study of texts. A bibliophile himself, Chaucer celebrates the joys and trials of reading while overlooking the library as a substantive learning haven. The location where learning transpires is always secondary to the contents of the books themselves. The library is a documented medieval bedrock to education, even wisdom, but it is little more than a shadow in Chaucer’s poetry. …

The study consists of two parts. The first briefly highlights the research methods used in library and information science (LIS). It identifies model development as an effective research method for LIS research. It also reviews different aspects of models and their use in LIS research in Pakistan. The second part illustrates an example of a draft model entitled “PAK-NISEA” recently proposed for a PhD project. Related issues of the proposed model, i.e. rationale, objectives, research methodology, data collection process, important characteristics of PAK-NISEA, are also discussed.

This paper examines challenges of access to agricultural information by fish farmers in Niger Delta Region of Nigeria. The survey research design was employed. 100 fish farmers from Bayelsa and Delta States in Nigeria, served as population for the study. The questionnaire, personal observation, and oral interview were the instruments used in data collection. The study revealed that there is availability of relevant agricultural information for fish farmers, with a corresponding difficulty in accessing such information. Factors impeding access to agricultural information include inadequate agricultural extension officers and insufficient use of media, among others. This research analyzes caricatures related to Library and Information Science (LIS), to identify LIS aspects in order to recognize valid criticisms and offer recommendations. Two hundred fifty cartoons and caricatures relating to the topics "book", "library", and "LIS" were gathered and analyzed by means of content analysis. This paper examines the influence of leadership style on the performance of subordinates in Nigerian Libraries. The sample consisted of professional librarians and their supporting staff in Nigerian libraries. A total of 100 questionnaires were administered, with a 72 percent response rate. The result showed that there was a positive relationship between the leadership style of librarians and support staff in Nigerian libraries.

African universities are indispensable in economic, social, and human development through research and academic activities. A university library is the hub of academic activities in African universities. ICT has transformed the library into a new information unit, providing electronic cataloging, online public access catalogue (OPAC), electronic acquisitions and serial control, interlibrary loan, and circulation. Internet bandwidth is the life blood of a modern university. Low bandwidth and connectivity have not allowed the African university libraries to benefit from information superhighways This paper examines initiatives and extent of connectivity among African university libraries. It discusses obstacles to connectivity and offers solutions.

This paper reports on a study which assessed the effects of information and communication technology (ICT) on research and development activities at the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO). The research focused on the use of computers, application software, and the Internet by all cadres of staff at the Institute. A thematic analysis highlighted the current state of ICT applications, level of literacy, and problems and challenges encountered in the application and use of ICTs. The study revealed a need to train members of staff in ICT. Infrastructure such as power supply and Internet connectivity need to be improved.

As a primary source of information, theses and dissertations are particularly useful to researchers, but most languish in obscurity in university libraries and archives. The best way to make use of theses and dissertations is through electronic publication and online access. This paper looks at the status of use and adoption of ETDs in various different parts of the world, describes the history and development of ETDs, key issues governing ETD projects, potential merits of ETDs for effective teaching and research, and ETD initiatives in India.

This paper examines the role of Nigerian private university libraries in supporting research. The case study approach was used for the study and a questionnaire was used to collect data from 120 respondents. Data were analyzed using percentage and graphical analysis. The major findings are that: research impacts positively on community development, research output impacts the recognition and ranking of universities, the library impacts positively on research, and library ICT impacts on the quality of research. Although librarians have traditionally defended intellectual freedom, the American Library Association (ALA) tends to treat it as a local management issue. As librarianship has become increasingly technical defense of intellectual freedom has diminished. Censorship generates self-censorship and demonstrates a subservient relation to authority detrimental to collection development. Using instances from his professional life, the author argues that censorship infantilizes patrons, discourages critical thinking, and is counterproductive to institutions of higher learning.

Long before the emergence of the World Wide Web, librarians had a long tradition of collecting and classifying physical materials. Influenced by these activities, information literacy instruction has defined and taught sources as objects of similar content and/or format. Because of their ability to organize information for easy retrieval, such definitions are helpful from a practical standpoint. Unfortunately, they do little to account for a source's role as a communicative act shared within and between communities. To expand our definition we must look to Genre Theory. Supervision Of Special Collections In Federal And State University Libraries In Nigeria, R.I. Echezona

This study assessed the supervisory styles in special collections in federal and state university libraries in Nigeria. Descriptive survey design was adopted with purposive sampling to obtain a sample of 178 librarians and library officers in 12 federal and state university libraries in Nigeria. A questionnaire was used in the collection of data. Mean scores and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions. The findings showed that approaches to supervision include routine checks of subordinates, periodic evaluation of stock, regular meeting with staff, reprimanding of erring staff, and a liberal supervisory style.

This article investigates the theft of law books in the Nigerian university law libraries. A total of 15 libraries were used as research subjects. Data was gathered using a questionnaire. Result show that virtually all the libraries had experienced the loss of law books. Reference books in law are the main target. The cost implications of the thefts are examined. Possible causes of the theft of law books are also reviewed and suggestions that might reduce the rate of theft are provided.

This study evaluates the content and quality of academic library websites. An evaluation checklist is used as a tool for evaluation of academic library websites. The checklist is divided into five main parts followed by Rating Table. The quantitative pointing system (ten point scale) and five point rating scales are used to evaluate and rank the websites. The study reveals that very few (16 percent) websites provide information about the date of last updating. The study analyzed references listed by textbook authors from Nigerian polytechnics. The educational qualifications, subject background, and institutional affiliations of authors and publishers of textbooks were examined. Documentary research design was adopted for this study. A total of 102 books were examined using the availability sampling technique. Data gathered were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study revealed that a significant majority of the textbooks were filled with citation errors. Findings revealed that a majority of the textbooks used the American Psychological association (APA) format of referencing. Further analysis revealed that a significant number of textbooks had no references at all. …

The paper examines resource sharing among libraries and it benefirts for legal research and administration of justice in Nigeria.Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is a critical requirement resource sharing. The use of Z39.50 as an aid to resource sharing is discussed.Categories of resource sharing and the benefits to be derived from each category by the cooperating libraries are also highlighted.
