Historically, attention to grey literature in the academic library was focused on external collections – documents produced by government agencies or research centers. Little, if any, systematic attention was paid to the grey literature that was produced on university campuses. The advent of the Web, while bringing more interest to grey literature in general did not change this situation much. However, the trend toward the creation of institutional repositories has caused a considerable shift in interest. The acquisition is done after PSU alumnus and founder of Dark Horse Comics Mark Richardson donated multiple copies of the past issues of their publication and succeeding copies of the publication. The article offers information on the modern online public access catalog (OPAC) which is available on the Internet through WorldCat in the U.S. As stated, modern OPAC improves on previous catalogs with enhanced search capabilities and is accessible from any computer with an Internet connection. In addition, WorldCat.org offers an interface that displays search results that guide users to the nearest library that holds the item in question, thus allowing the user to find the quickest way of obtaining the item from a library.

Three Times A Study: Business Students And The Library, Heidi Senior, Kerry Wu, Diane M. Martin, Margaret Mellinger

Revisiting a study performed 30 years ago, researchers at three institutions surveyed undergraduate and graduate students in marketing courses to determine their attitudes toward and knowledge of library services and collections. Results found that 21st-century students are more likely to believe in the importance of library research, to have had library instruction, and to use Web sites and Internet search engines to begin their research. However, they are less likely to read business periodicals. Faced with a list of information sources, they are generally able to pick out a useful resource, although not always the most efficient. This chapter explores the possibilities for embedding library services in online course management systems, including the creation of portals to library services for online learners. While technology is always an issue, many of these strategies are decidedly low-tech, but “high-touch,” putting a human face on what was before a faceless edifice. Embedding the library within the course management system streamlines access for online learners, making it more likely that they will utilize library resources and services.

As future professionals, graduate students must be information literate; however, information literacy instruction of graduate students is often neglected. To address this need, we created literature review workshops to serve graduate students from a wide range of subject disciplines at a point of shared need. Not only did this strategy prove to be successful in reaching a large number of students from a wide range of subject disciplines, the data gathered from the students identified some of the gaps graduate students have in their knowledge about library services.

Since April 2005, 10 studies have been published that directly compare the citation features of Google Scholar to those of Web of Science. In an effort to better understand the advantages and disadvantages of these tools, the author undertook an investigation of this research. Although the parameters of the studies varied greatly with respect to the disciplines, dates, and sample sizes, analysis of these preliminary studies can help us gain an initial—albeit sketchy—impression of the relative strength and weakness of each service. The results of this effort are reported here as an informal meta-analysis, followed by some recommendations for utilizing …

Library Mashups For The Virtual Campus: Using Web 2.0 Tools To Create A New Current Awareness Service, Linda Absher, Adriene Lim, Kerry Wu

This article explores the ways academic libraries can exploit Web 2.0 technologies and techniques to create Current Awareness Service (CAS) mashups for campus virtual environments. Described are Portland State University Library's efforts to create a CAS site called "Topic Watch;" the criteria used to select humanities and business content for the project; and an overview of the technology employed to combine data from disparate sources into the service. Also summarized are the challenges and issues the library faced during development and future steps to be taken to incorporate the new resource into the campus virtual environment.
