Information Seeking And Use By Low-Level Students, Jin Soo Chung, Jinmook Kim

This paper reports on an exploratory study of information seeking and use in high school students with a low level of information skills and academic competency. Seven students in the 11th grade Remedial Education Program class in American Literature and Composition completed a class project that involved somewhat comprehensive information seeking and use. Data were collected through observation and interview (with students, the teacher, and two library media specialists). All documents each student produced in completing the class project were gathered for data analysis. ALA-accredited schools of library and information science produce several thousand new librarians yearly, and many of these graduates are assigned supervisory responsibilities relatively early in their careers. Most have responsibility for facilitating the work of others, preparing budgets, planning and evaluating programs, making staffing decisions, and maintaining the safety and security of assets that include funds, related property, and library buildings. Others find themselves in leadership roles that require interfacing with other organizations, mobilizing community support, and representing their organizations to their users and supporters.

Utilizing Focus Groups To Evaluate An Information Literacy Program In A General Biology Course, Betsy S. Hopkins

The Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University (BYU) recently implemented a number of information literacy strategies to help students in Biology 100, a large general education class, find resources for their term assignment. The library's services for Biology 100 students were evaluated using focus groups composed of both teaching assistants and students. This paper will describe the class and the assignment, discuss the impact the class had on library staff, detail the efforts of the staff to meet the needs of Biology 100 students, and present results of focus groups used to evaluate the library's outreach and teaching …

A comparison of two approaches to academic writing and research pedagogies demonstrates that, for Vyhmeister, truth is to be found outside and above us--it is a process of discovery, while Hamilton's approach focuses on the spiritual formation of the writer and can be understood as reflecting a process of spiritual growth. A third approach, which I develop in this article, views academic writing and theological inquiry as a ministry, in which the writer is served by and, in turn, serves the community of faith for the purpose of building a corporate knowledge of God. The biennial STS continuing education survey was conducted at the end of 2005, in collaboration with two other organizations of science librarians. The top continuing education needs of science librarians include new technologies, professional development and keeping current, institutional repositories/digital archives, promoting science information literacy, collaboration between faculty and librarians, and finding free high-quality online data. This paper describes the process of developing and administering the survey and discusses the survey results.

Abstract: Commons-based digital libraries are an emerging phenomenon. They are based on a new vision of digital information organization and use. Purpose – This paper examines William Stetson Merrill, the compiler of A Code for Classifiers and a Newberry Library employee (1889‐1930) in an attempt to glean lessons for modern information studies from an early librarian's career. Design/methodology/approach – Merrill's career at the Newberry Library and three editions of the code are briefly examined using historical, bibliographic, and conceptual methods. Primary and secondary sources in archives and libraries are summarized to provide insight into Merrill's attempts to develop or modify tools to solve the knowledge organization problems he faced. During 2001-2002, a formal study was conducted jointly by Brigham Young University's Office of Planning and Assessment (OPA) and the Harold B. Lee Library (HBLL) to determine the value of the library to the university community. The study described in this paper was undertaken at a time when some experts were predicting the demise of the academic library, and university administrators were questioning the need for new building, budget, and personnel requests. IN the First quarter of 2003, employers took 1,508 mass layoff actions. this trend continues in 2005. there are many reasons for these layoffs, including bankruptcy, business ownership change, financial difficulty, reorganization, domestic or overseas relocation, model change over, product line discontinuation, weather-related reasons, and so on. The employment market is tight right now, and professionals are forced to expand their job searches beyond their geographic areas. Many professionals who have a family look for jobs in the suburbs, trying to avoid congestion and pollution. The U.S. Census shows an increase in nontraditional families also moving to the suburbs.
