The New York State Higher Education Initiative (NYSHEI) represents the public and private academic and research libraries of New York, and differs from other state-based academic library organizations in both its size and mission. NYSHEI holds about 150 member institutions, including all 87 of the state’s public colleges and universities, and nine ARL members. Founded in 2002, NYSHEI evolved into its current form in 2007 by adopting a focus on political advocacy. This article provides an overview of a collaborative project of the University of Oregon Libraries, Infographics Lab, and an art history professor to create a virtual research guide, entitled, “Archaeology and Landscape in the Altai Mountains of Mongolia.” Offering accompanying digital image archives, this project serves as a model for humanities data preservation and presents a collaborative strategy for promoting faculty research output in a new media environment. This article describes the authors interactions with Russian archivists, librarians, and historians during a 2008 delegation visit to Saratov Province, the state of archival holdings and special collections in the Saratov area, and preliminary discussions regarding proposed collaborative digitization and academic research projects. A reciprocal visit by Russian and Ukrainian colleagues the following year to participate in the Inaugural Conference on German-Russian Studies is also detailed. In 2008, the University of Nevada, Reno Library moved into a new building, the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center. As part of this move, approximately half of the library’s print collections were moved into the building’s automated storage and retrieval system; a substantial portion of these materials were federal depository materials. This case study describes how cataloging and government documents staff at the University of Nevada, Reno collaborated to achieve intellectual and physical control over a huge, largely uncataloged government documents collection destined for automated storage. Shipping materials via a library courier service is much cheaper than shipping via the U.S. Postal Service. Most library delivery services are regional or state-based. This article illustrates how two separate services combined to develop the multi-state courier system COKAMO. COKAMO is moving tens of thousands of items between three states at a fraction of U.S. Postal Service rates. Within one year of implementing the system, over 57,000 items have been shipped, creating savings of over $215,000 for participating libraries. Significant changes in the behavior of interlibrary loan staff throughout the region are evidenced in statistics which show an increase …

This article is a summary of the second Moving Mountains Conference on the physical delivery of materials. The Conference was held in Cincinnati in September 2008. An ad hoc group of librarians involved in delivery regularly meet to discuss best practices and new applications. This article covers similarities between the logistic industry and libraries, a survey of physical delivery practitioners, and new trends in home delivery and automatic material handling systems. This article also discusses the growth of physical delivery, models of delivery, vendor relationships, and the Rethinking Resource Sharing group.

The non-tenured faculty at Stony Brook University Libraries has implemented an annual one-day retreat which includes presentations, posters of research in progress, group activities, and a discussion of current library issues. The retreats have inspired junior faculty members and assisted them in forming a supportive network of peer mentoring for guidance through the tenure process.

Africa needs information about HIV/AIDS. Librarian activists have a duty to organize, repackage, and circulate HIV/AIDS information. Unfortunately, this has led in some cases to an unintentional assertion of cultural hegemony, which operates invisibly to those who are part of the “dominant” or “dominating” culture. Unexamined assumptions of “superiority” have led to a bias that the West possesses the only correct method for codifying knowledge. The West cannot appropriately evaluate the successes or failures of HIV/AIDS education in Africa if it employs only American or Western ideas, categories, and sensibilities. From July to October, 2008, Laura Crossett, Joseph Kraus and Steve Lawson organized the Library Camp of the West (http://librarycampwest.pbwiki.com/). This was an unconference that took place on October 10, 2008 at the University of Denver. The authors used many technology tools to organize the event, such as email, wikis, blogs, two tools from Google, the Doodle scheduling Website, Flickr and more. This article will explain how they used those tools to prepare for the unconference.

Academic librarians are often physically and intellectually isolated at their institutions, and they need to accept much of the blame. Professional literature shows that librarians continue to argue against the responsibilities of tenure, despite the fact that in two of the three usual rubrics of tenure and promotion—namely publication and service—the expectations for both teaching faculty and librarians are generally the same. In addition, academic librarians will not be treated equally unless they begin to think and work outside of the physical academic library. The Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries (CARL) was a pioneering library consortium that evolved from a small informal group of research library directors known as the “Taskforce for Interlibrary Cooperation” in the early 1970s. Early projects included shared acquisitions funding, a union list of serials, and a shared public access catalog. Drawing upon published sources, unpublished primary sources, archival records and personal interviews with early participants, this article provides an account of the key individuals of the organization, the technological innovations of CARL, and its legacy within the library community.

This article summarizes a session at the 24th Annual North American Serials Interest Group (NASIG) Conference held in Asheville, NC on June 6, 2009. The presenter for the session, Roberta F. Woods of Franklin Pierce Law Center, gave the history behind the New England Law Library Consortium (NELLCO) development of an alternative to a federated search engine that they dubbed Universal Search Solution. The search tool helped the consortia libraries to resolve their problem of underutilized resources.
