This paper explores the place of the rural library in the context of reading habits of teens. Using Derek Seamon’s concept of the place ballet, four themes are discussed: daily reading practices, the visibility of the library, the Internet as a reading site and the temporal constraints on leisure reading.

Information organized in any fashion needs to be understood, needs to be communicated in order to be useful.

Baudrillard’s views on consumers in and of a postmodern society are employed to describe the users (researchers) vis-à-vis interactions with the metadata described. Hyperreality leads naturally into Introna’s call for a personal relationship as the sine qua non of obligation. This, along with Wittgenstein’s notion of ambiguities in language (meaning) grounded in activities and practices, leads to an ethical level of practice.

A number of models are suggested to aid in communication and achieve obligation in information organization.

Using A Survey Tool To Establish Preservation Priorities: Results From The Historical Folio Collection Survey At The Cushing/Whitney Medical Library, Yale University, Robin Featherstone, Sarah Burge

Objective: An item-level survey was undertaken to reveal the preservation needs of a unique collection of rare medical historical folios and oversize anatomical atlases at the Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney Medical Library, Yale University.

Methodology: During a re-shelving project, surveyors noted detailed preservation information in a FileMakerPro database. Recorded information included: dimensions, whether a new enclosure was needed, external status (condition of boards, spine, cover), internal status (cover-to-text attachment, paper), attributes (covering material, binding type, inclusions, bookplate owner, decoration), value/damage (value, damage summary, treatment summary), and photos.

Results and Conclusions: Survey data revealed vital information for determining preservation priorities. The …

The Dawn Of The "Chaotic Account": Horatio Hale’S Australia Notebook And The Development Of Anthropologists’ Field Notes, Tom Belton

This paper proposes an archival analysis of notebooks, and their relationships to other parts of personal archives (e.g. journals or diaries). The bulk of the paper is an analysis of the historical development of a particular genre of notebooks: anthropological field notes, “chaotic accounts”, as Branislaw Manilnowski called them, based largely on observation. It provides a review of anthropologists’ own recent literature on the subject, and a short case study of a mid nineteenth century notebook of the American explorer/ethnographer Horatio Hale that serves as an example of one seed out of which anthropological field notes grew.

Information Literacy And Research-Intensive Graduate Students: Enhancing The Role Of Research Librarians, Marni R. Harrington

This article investigates how psychology graduate students find information for coursework and research, who teaches them how to find it, and whether differences emerge over the course of their graduate careers. Findings indicate that these graduate students are comfortable using campus libraries, prefer electronic resources, ask supervisors when they need assistance locating information, and have some interest in furthering their information literacy knowledge. Finally, the master’s students use different information management skills than do the PhD students, as evidenced by the use of bibliographic management software. Measuring Quality In Chat Reference Consortia: A Comparative Analysis Of Responses To Users’ Queries, Deborah L. Meert, Lisa M. Given

Academic libraries have experienced growing demand for 24/7 access
to resources and services. Despite the challenges and costs of chat
reference service and consortia, many libraries are finding the demand
for these services worth the cost. One key challenge is providing and
measuring quality of service, particularly in a consortia setting. This study
explores the quality of service provided in one academic library participating
in a 24/7 chat reference consortium, by assessing transcripts of
chat sessions using in-house reference quality standards. Findings point
to both similarities and differences between chat interactions of local
librarians versus consortia staff.

Keyword Enhanced Web Structure Mining For Business Intelligence, L. Vaughan, J. You

The study proposed the method of keyword enhanced Web structure mining which combines the ideas of Web content mining with Web structure mining. The method was used to mine data on business competition among a group of DSLAM companies. Specifically, the keyword DSLAM was incorporated into queries that searched for co-links between pairs of company Websites. The resulting co-link matrix was analyzed using multidimensional scaling (MDS) to map business competition positions. The study shows that the proposed method improves upon the previous method of Web structure mining alone by producing a more accurate map of business competition in the DSLAM …

Situated in a review of rural, cultural, and youth geographies, this article reports on a qualitative study of the role of reading and libraries in the lives of older rural teenagers. The primary method of data collection was the use of in‐depth, flexibly structured interviews with twenty‐seven youth between the ages of fifteen and nineteen years, supplemented with data from unobtrusive observation and environmental scanning in a specific geographic locale. Abstract: In this article, the recent strategic turn by U.S.-based media corporations toward the use of broadband technologies, particularly online video, is assessed as a turning point in how news is being conceptualized, distributed, and consumed. Using the heuristic tool the integrated news spectacle, and its application to political, economic, and technological developments propelled forward by the 2005 Live 8 concerts, the authors analyze contemporary trajectories concerning the news and their more general implications regarding what Innisians refer to as the annihilation of time. Why Are Websites Co-Linked? The Case Of Canadian Universities, L. Vaughan, M.E.I. Kipp, Y. Gao

This study examined why Websites were co-linked using Canadian university Websites as the test set. Pages that co-linked to these university Websites were located using Yahool. A random sample of 859 co-linking pages (the page that initiated the co-link) was retrieved and the contents of the page, as well as the context of the link, were manually examined to record the following variables: language, country, type of Website, and the reasons for co-linking. The study found that in over 94% of cases, the two co-linked universities were related academically; many of these cases (38%) showed a relationship specifically in teaching …

Libraries have been involved in technological transformation for several decades, and are now increasingly associated with discourses surrounding the development of a global information society. The information society, however, remains a contested terrain, with a major focus on connectivity to ICTs, and is often linked with technological determinist and technocratic agendas. The library profession and field do not adequately theorize technology in a way that offers a progressive alternative to this dominant information society vision.

Storytime programs for young children are ritual events in the everyday life of the public library. This article analyzes data from two such programs to identify and analyze the work carried out by program leaders, their adult and child participants, and other social actors in other settings (e.g., library CEOs) in order to enable the program to happen. The Seeking Of Baby-Feeding Information By Canadian Women Pregnant With Twins, Pamela J. Mckenzie

Objective: to analyse baby-feeding information needs and seeking described by Canadian women pregnant with twins. Design, setting, and participants: in-depth semi-structured interviews with 19 pregnant women were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Transcripts provided the data for discourse analysis of the use of two interpretative repertoires. Measurements and findings: the first interpretative repertoire represented caring for twins as fundamentally distinct from caring for singly-born children and therefore emphasised the commonality of mothers of twins regardless of their background or situation.
