What does “brevity” evoke in today’s academic library? In this paper, I explore the notion of brevity with my colleagues at the University of Guelph Library, asking them what the term evokes for them in the library and higher education more broadly.

This paper reveals a clash of values and ideologies which may well point to one of the more universal tensions within higher education today.

Have you ever discovered an e-resource in your catalogue which was purchased months ago but still does not have a link for access? Have you received questions from requesting librarians about when they can expect access? Does it sometimes feel like requests for new products have fallen into a black hole? This session will describe how Western Libraries modified the CORAL software (developed by Notre Dame University Library) to smooth out our workflow and ensure that resources are requested, received and linked in a timely manner.

In this article the authors introduce the Librarians’ Research Partnership (LRP), founded in 2013, at McGill and Concordia University Libraries. The Partnership was inspired by the Canadian Association of Research Libraries’ Librarians’ Research Institute (CARL LRI) which was attended by three of the authors in 2012 and is described here from the point of view of the participants. While some academic librarians have embraced the role of researcher and have successfully become active researchers and authors, others have struggled to be productive in this aspect of their responsibilities. A content analysis of literature on research productivity for librarians and non-librarians was conducted in order to identify factors that have been found to affect research success. This content analysis is part of a larger study designed to develop an instrument to measure the impact of key factors on librarians' success in research. Purpose - This paper examines the current state of collecting with emphasis on small, independent, and local digital media for the purpose of exploring librarians’ tools in order to develop unique collections with these types of cultural products included.

Design/methodology/approach – This conceptual paper is based upon examination of the current state of publishing and digital media, of case profiles of independent digital content providers, of case profiles of public libraries using digital media to expand collections, and of collection developers’ tools, including reviewing sources.

Interdisciplinarity is a pervasive trend in 21st-century knowledge building and innovation. It is predicated on the recognition that creative solutions to the world’s increasingly complex problems require the intersection of diverse expertise. In 1944, two California courts agreed with actor Olivia De Havilland’s claim that the state’s seven year limit on the enforceability of employment contracts applied to her 1936 contract with Warner Bros. Pictures, and refused to enforce the contract beyond its seventh anniversary. This article revisits the well-known De Haviland v. Warner Bros. Pictures (1944) Appellate Court decision, and its lesser-known, lower court antecedent, in order to explore the decisions’ related but distinct assumptions about employment, employers, and employees. Both courts agreed (1) that employees need protection from excesses of employee power, (2) that employment is a public, social phenomenon, …

The following study is a textual analysis of collective agreements from Canadian Universities that include provisions for librarians. There has for many years been a focus on the “crisis in librarianship.” The hope with this research is to celebrate the victories and highlight how collective agreements are foundations upon which librarians can build. The collective agreements act as signposts of the gains that librarians have made over the years in negotiations with administration and as advocates on campuses across the country. This project documents the advances librarians have made and makes recommendations for areas where further activism may be needed. …

This poster outlines the preliminarily findings of the EDITS study: an inquiry into the digital information habits of senior citizens. The research presented here will focus on the adoption of ereading technology by seniors in order to determine the habits and attitudes, motivations, and barriers experienced by this demographic. Employing semi-structured interviews and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), this study aims to investigate one element of the digital divide that sometimes goes unnoticed: age. Despite ingrained habits based on print, findings show motivations, such as convenience, contribute to the adoption of ereading by seniors.

Truth And Deception At The Rhetorical Structure Level, Victoria L. Rubin, Tatiana Lukoianova

This paper furthers the development of methods to dis- tinguish truth from deception in textual data. We use rhetorical structure theory (RST) as the analytic framework to identify systematic differences between deceptive and truthful stories in terms of their coher- ence and structure. A sample of 36 elicited personal stories, self-ranked as truthful or deceptive, is manu- ally analyzed by assigning RST discourse relations among each story’s constituent parts. A vector space model (VSM) assesses each story’s position in multi- dimensional RST space with respect to its distance from truthful and deceptive centers as measures of the story’s level of …

Twenty academic historians in Southern Ontario were interviewed about their use of e-books and the role of serendipity in their research. A central theme that surfaced from the grounded theory analysis was that their use of digital tools and texts is limiting their opportunity for a chance encounter with information.
