The People’s Republic of China is currently the seventh largest economy in the world and is projected to be the largest economy by 2050. Commensurate with its growing economic power, the PRC is using its political power more frequently on the world stage. As a result of these changes, interest in China and its legal system is growing among attorneys and academics. International law librarians similarly are seeing more researchers interested in China, its laws and economy. The principal language of China, Mandarin Chinese, is considered a difficult language to learn. The Foreign Service Institute has rated Mandarin as “exceptionally …

This report is the product of a semester-long study for course 768, Problems in Library and Information Agency Administration at the University of South Carolina’s School of Library and Information Science.

The purpose of this study was to do an in-depth analysis of the Reference Department at the University of South Carolina’s Thomas Cooper Library. A number of methods of factgathering were employed in the performance of this analysis, including:

• a literature review of the trends, changes and methods of evaluation for reference services nationwide;

This catalog accompanied the exhibit of a range of contemporary fine printing and book arts from North American presses held in the collections of the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections. The department also holds extensive collections of British fine printing from a range of presses such as Strawberry Hill, Kelmscott, Vale, Eragny, Doves, etc. The items in the collections are used to support the teaching mission of the department in book arts and printing history.

Information Seeking And Use By Low-Level Students, Jin Soo Chung, Jinmook Kim

This paper reports on an exploratory study of information seeking and use in high school students with a low level of information skills and academic competency. Seven students in the 11th grade Remedial Education Program class in American Literature and Composition completed a class project that involved somewhat comprehensive information seeking and use. Data were collected through observation and interview (with students, the teacher, and two library media specialists). All documents each student produced in completing the class project were gathered for data analysis. The preliminary findings of the study indicated that students experienced a great deal of difficulty in …

To Market, To Market: The Supervisory Skills And Managerial Competencies Most Valued By New Library Supervisors, Jennifer Weil Arns, Carol Price

ALA-accredited schools of library and information science produce several thousand new librarians yearly, and many of these graduates are assigned supervisory responsibilities relatively early in their careers. Most have responsibility for facilitating the work of others, preparing budgets, planning and evaluating programs, making staffing decisions, and maintaining the safety and security of assets that include funds, related property, and library buildings. Others find themselves in leadership roles that require interfacing with other organizations, mobilizing community support, and representing their organizations to their users and supporters.

While particular attention was paid to works entirely by MacDiarmid in the selection of works to be displayed, the Roy Collection is rich also in works edited by MacDiarmid, or to which he wrote introductions or contributed essays or poems. This catalog accompanied the small exhibit of books and other items pertaining to Napoleon maintained by Rare Books and Special Collections. South Carolina College library actively collected books throughout the years when Napoleon was Emperor and in the years after his defeat at the Battle of Waterloo. Many of the items on display were bought on publication for the college library as new works illustrating current world affairs. Others come from a group of books about Napoleon donated by Mrs. Donald Saunders and from the Alfred Chapin Rogers Collection.

This catalog accompanied the exhibit which displays a portion of the Wickenheiser Collection of John Milton. The breath of Milton's own interests and the international and chronological range of those who have responded to him are highlighted in this exhibit. Among the items on display are early illustrated editions of Paradise Lost, books that influenced Milton, contemporary reaction to Milton, Milton as a political thinker, Milton and his illustrators, as well as those relating to Milton as a poet, and the growth of his influence.

This brochure describes a Department of Rare Books & Special Collections exhibit of materials relating to William Blake. The exhibit charted Blake’s development chronologically through both sides of his activity, from his earliest known work as an apprentice engraver in the 1770’s through the extraordinary originality of his political and prophetic poems in the 1790’s and early 1800’s, and the deep emotion of the later illustrations he prepared for Edward Young’s poem Night Thoughts (1796-97) and Robert Blair’s The Grave (1808). John James Audubon & Ornithological Illustration Exhibition, University Libraries--University Of South Carolina

Rare Books & Special Collections Publications

Among the greatest treasures of the antebellum South Carolina College (now the University of South Carolina) was its set of Audubon's huge double-elephant folio Birds of America, published in parts between 1827 and 1838, and purchased by the South Carolina state legislature for the College. Fewer than 130 complete sets, with all 435 plates, now survive. In addition to its main archival set of Birds of America, USC’s Thomas Cooper Library bas received numerous donations of significant items to its Audubon collections over the years.
