Real-World Research: A Qualitative Study Of Faculty Perceptions Of The Library's Role In Service-Learning, Anne Marie Gruber

Service-learning, a growing pedagogy in higher education, provides opportunities for students to contribute to communities and to reflect upon experiences ranging from direct service to advocacy. Librarians have an important but underutilized role in supporting service-learning as they contribute to institutional missions and the public purposes of academia. However, there is a gap in the literature related to faculty perceptions of information literacy instruction and skills related to service-learning. The researcher used semi-structured in-depth interviews, investigating these perceptions among 12 faculty across 10 disciplines. Not quite a year ago I found myself in a familiar situation. A one-shot instruction session was fast approaching. It was for a professor and class project that I knew from prior semesters: a marketing research class in which student teams work on specific business questions or problems put forth by local clients (small businesses, non-profit groups, campus organizations, etc.). Community Engagement Celebration Day

Since 2006 the faculty librarians at Rod Library have arranged for and conducted hundreds of research day events for thousands of Iowa public and private school students. These intensive three to six hour research events include: instruction on conducting university-level research, tours of Rod Library and UNI resources, one-on-one research consultations with a faculty librarian, and for those interested in attending UNI, informational sessions with UNI professors and coaches. Thirty-two different area schools have participated in Research Days at Rod Library. The Global Reach of UNI’s Community Engagement Activities The community engagement work of the UNI campus is gathered, preserved, and showcased in UNI ScholarWorks, the institutional repository. The Rod Library’s digital scholarship unit coordinates and maintains UNI ScholarWorks. The purpose of the repository is to collect, preserve, and make available the creative and scholarly output from the University of Northern Iowa. Early in the history of the institutional repository, a section on community engagement was developed and modeled after the Community Engagement section found in the University of Massachusetts, Amherst’s repository, which highlighted its community engagement Carnegie classification. Moving Words: Building Community Through Service-Learning In The Arts, Anne Marie Gruber, Angela L. Pratesi, Angela Waseskuk

In this unique project, college students in a first-year Three-Dimensional Concepts art course are partnered with a local youth writing project to create short films based on participants’ writings. This experience was born out of a campus Service-Learning Institute (SLI) to train faculty on best practices. The mutual goals included giving voice to area youth and connecting college students to the community. All participants explored and reflected on the importance of community engagement and citizenship by acknowledging their similarities and differences through creative lenses.

Participants from both groups generated ideas through shared journal exercises that the youth writers then used …

School communities and educational standards clearly recognize that reading is a foundational skill for all learners. In light of this, the American Association of School Librarians (AASL, 2010) notes the critical position of teacher librarians to partner with other educators to promote literacy and provide opportunities for library use. Specifically, school libraries are charged with providing “open, non-restricted access to a varied high quality collection of reading materials in multiple formats that refl ect academic needs and personal interests” (para. 6).
