Metadata remediation of digital collections is inevitable. At some point, each repository faces the need to clean-up digital collections legacy metadata so that it conforms to new standards. Typically, this need emerges either as a response to an updated metadata application profile, or as preparation for migration to a new digital asset management system (DAMS). Normalized metadata is critical for an improved search experience and easy discovery of digital objects.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to assess the use of digital collections created via the large-scale digitization of archival collections. The large-scale digitization method specifically examined is the reuse of archival description from finding aids to create digital collections that consist mainly of compound digital objects, equivalent to a folder of items, minimally described at the aggregate level. This article compares web analytics data for two large-scale digital collections and one digital collection with rich, item-level description.

Franklin, AHIP, FMLA, chaired the task force and guided initiatives. From 2017 to 2020, the task force completed a review of MLA defining documents—including the mission, vision, values, and code of ethics— resulting in language updates to these documents. As MLA transitioned through the communities process, the DITF contributed to the transition. In 2019, the Medical Library Association (MLA) adopted a new model of community governance and participation, referred to as the MLA Communities Transition. The Communities Transition was the culmination of long-ranging plans by MLA to support two of its strategic goals: Diversity and Inclusion, and Communities. The reorganization aimed to strengthen MLA member communities, better support programming, reduce administrative overhead, and attract new members. The 2019 - 2020 MLA Rising Stars cohort was tasked to study the Communities Transition and identify lessons that might be applicable to any major future change proposed for the organization.

In late 2015, we presented a three-hour workshop on the nascent ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education at the European Conference on Information Literacy (ECIL) in Tallinn, Estonia,1 after which we were approached about preparing a more in-depth learning experience on the Framework for a group of international librarians. These librarians were part of the AMICAL Consortium, a consortium of twenty-nine liberal arts institutions in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Writing programs and academic libraries are frequent collaborators based on shared concerns about writing and research. However, in these collaborative relationships librarians often share their expertise with writing program administrators and individual instructors without developing the information literacy expertise of the majority of writing program instructors. At the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the library instruction program and the writing program recognized that by facilitating collaborative professional development, they could together provide enhanced support for instructors teaching research-based writing courses. This case study describes a multi-year project to reclassify the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ (UNLV) University Archives. UNLV’s Special Collections and Archives decided to rethink and reorganize University Archives based on data collected during an archival collections survey. The steps included moving away from the existing record series classification and implementing a new collection classification schema that will improve discovery and access. Engineers, as well as other professionals, researchers and students in many disciplines, will occasionally need to use standards documents from a wide variety of standards developing organizations. As our university aims to simultaneously increase research productivity and graduation rates, the need for rapid access to full text standards documents will only increase. In the past, most standards were provided by the library in bound, print format, with the exception of digital IEEE standards, just-in-case they were needed. This training introduced the large-scale approach to describing multi-page digital compound objects. It was developed to disambiguate and clarify the new approach of describing compound objects in Project client/ContentDm. The training focused on important metadata fields, provided practical examples and instructed student assistants and staff how to apply the new rules consistently across all collections. The training session was followed by hands-on activities and discussion.

The Diverse Recruitment Task Force 3 was charged to “focus on a qualitative environmental scan of UNLV University Libraries’ current hiring practices” with the goal of understanding the staff perceptions of current cultural climate and recommending potential areas of focus for future changes. Task Force 3 initially planned a formal qualitative research project with IRB approval around interviewing Libraries’ staff on their experiences with the hiring process. The UNLV University Libraries Inclusion and Equity Committee (IEC) developed the Diverse Recruitment project in order to fulfill its charge in supporting the Libraries’ commitment to increasing representation and retention of historically underrepresented groups at all levels of staff. These recommendations draw upon a range of best practices, procedures, and programs. Largely informed by Duke University’s February 2018 Task Force for Diversity in Recruitment Report, three task forces each investigated a different aspect of understanding diverse recruitment as it related to the Libraries. This study surveyed librarians, researchers, administrators, and others engaged in research on the impact of academic libraries on student success. This study, sponsored by an ACRL Impact Grant, specifically sought to expand the ACRL Academic Library Impact report, which defined strategic directions for library impact research, largely defined from the perspective of high-level administrators. This study addressed this limitation by surveying and interviewing professional librarians who are directly conducting library impact research, asking about their research experience, their attitudes about impact research, and their response to the ACRL report. The Scholarly Communication Initiatives and Digital Collections departments within the University of Nevada, Las Vegas adapted staff workflows to become student-centered, where workers create digital content for the University Libraries’ digital repositories. Each department has a diverse set of needs; Scholarly Communication Initiatives hires students to help with the creation of metadata records, review open access options for sharing each work, and upload items into the institutional repository.
