The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of bibliotherapy in relation to hospital patients. It includes a brief history as well as discussion of practitioners, patients and problems, methodology and effectiveness. It also offers recommendations for those who provide bibliotherapy within the hospital context. The focus is on the use of bibliotherapy by professionals other than mental health practitioners. Coverage includes common literary genres that can be used for bibliotherapy addressing patients’ affective issues.

In any elementary school classroom, a teacher will occasionally observe students involved in activities that seem neither honest nor ethical. What can teachers do to stimulate moral reasoning skills and principled attitudes in the elementary grades? This article suggests that situational learning is ideal for developing moral reasoning in today's young learners. Situational learning allows students to choose their own situations and structure personalized outcomes that may or may not be predicted by the teacher. There are no right and wrong answers or anticipated outcomes; the process entails risk-taking and uncertainty, for teacher and students alike. Situational learning permits individuals …

This project was initiated to support the Technical Information Center (TIC) efforts to acquire cited-reference documentation (journal articles, technical reports, book chapters, symposia and other monographs, reference materials, etc.). It also supported selective acquisition by UNLV Libraries of titles that would benefit the YMP, UCCSN/UNLV, and the general public’s research needs in the area of underground nuclear waste disposal and nuclear waste transportation.

The Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (HRC) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) has analyzed approximately 200 groundwater samples for over 60 trace elements and major solutes over the past ten years. These samples represent groundwaters from the Nevada Test Site, Amargosa Valley, the Spring Mountains, Death Valley, Ash Meadows, Pahranagat Valley, and Oasis Valley. The preparation of a data base containing all of these data is near completion and will be submitted to DOE upon its completion. Data verification is in progress. The single biggest challenge this past year has been to develop and deliver a new software technology to classify Homeland Security Sensitive documents with high precision. Travel writer and humorist Bryson has revised, adapted, and updated his style guide, first published in 1984 in Britain as Penguin Dictionary of Troublesome Words and in the US as Facts on File Dictionary of Troublesome Words, to appeal to contemporary American book buyers. Reference services at Oregon State University's Valley Library have undergone several reorganizations in response to institutional changes, shifting service needs and patron demands. Part of this history includes training for and functioning in team-based management. We have now evolved to a management model that utilizes workgroups and an advisory and coordinating council to assist in running the department. We find this model provides flexibility, sharing of the workload and professional development opportunities, all of which are essential in today's tumultuous reference environment. We will describe the functioning, potential hazards and multiple advantages of this model.

In the Spring of 2001, the Oregon State University Libraries began planning for a collaboration with the university's freshman composition program. In implementing this project, with no additional library resources, and with the majority of library faculty less experienced in working with freshman students, the coordinators of the program learned numerous lessons which highlighted both the steps needed in initiating and maintaining a new instruction program, and the functions and competencies vital to providing instructional leadership and coordination in an academic library. Those of us in educational institutions are continually asked to review our university library holdings; prioritizing on the basis of department selections, cost, rate of inflation, use by faculty and students and availability through interlibrary loans and other document retrieval procedures. No doubt, those in industry and clinical and private practice are also watching their budgets and are asked to review expenses for professional publications.

The Reference and Instruction Department at Oregon State University (OSU) was charged with creating a vision and goals for its instruction program. This article describes how we used the recently published ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education as a framework for an initial self-study of our instructional practice and for promoting the concept of information literacy at our institution. The process of assessing our current practice led to discussions with library and campus faculty about the value of information literacy and to a clearer articulation of our instructional mission.

For academic librarians to balance time requirements for research, service and job duties they need a keen sense of where their time is allocated. Although the literature gives some idea of average time allocated, a more detailed view is obtained through examination of one librarian’s seven-year accumulation of daily time logs. The log as a method for achieving balance and the goal of balance itself are explored.
