Promoting awareness of the University Archives has evolved for me for the past six years as University Archivist. It started out as an idea that quickly grew into a wonderful relationship between the University Archives and the rest of UNLV. I originally promoted awareness through outreach services as a librarian in Oro Valley, Arizona. It was a nice way for the organization to get the word out about the new library in the neighborhood. This literature review examines a sampling of the last ten years of research on the relationships between academic libraries and English Composition Programs in an effort to uncover potential methods for a new collaboration between the Lied Library and the English Composition Program at UNLV. The idea of a Journal of Western Archives began in the early 2000s after plans were being made for a super regional meeting in Las Vegas, NV. It was during this collaborative time that University Archivists Gordon Daines proposed an idea to then Conference of Inter-Mountain Archivists President John Murphy. Gordon wanted to establish a journal that would be for archivists working in the western United States. He noticed that as a researcher himself at BYU that archivists in the western United States didn’t publish as much as archivists in the eastern United States.

Information literacy—the ability "to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information” (American Library Association [ALA], 1989, para. 3)—has been widely and increasingly cited as an essential competency for college success, for the workplace, and for life (Bruce, 1997; Eisenberg, 2008; Fitzgerald, 2004; Johnston & Webber, 2003; National Leadership Council for Liberal Education and America’s Promise, 2007; Obama, 2009; Rader, 2002). When we work with classes, we are often asked to “cover” MLA or APA style – what they hear from us does not meet their needs.

We have two approaches to share today: one takes a metacognitive tack that encourages students to make an individual plan to address what they find frustrating, and the other is a rubric that an instructor can use to clarify the expectations and to emphasize what elements of citation conventions are most important when they are grading.

Many patrons do not even know libraries have map collections, let alone what kinds of maps are in them or how they could use those maps. Map displays and exhibits can help increase interest in map collections. Muriel Strickland wrote an article on casual map displays with the title "Map Displays: a Means of Promoting Map Use" in volume 17, number 3 of the WAML IB (June 1986). Understanding the cultural aspects that affect a student’s ability to appropriately use resources is important in developing outreach and instruction in multicultural settings. Differences in educational philosophies, students’ previous scholastic training and cultural differences in individual motivation are all factors that may affect a freshman’s ability to understand an American university’s idea of academic integrity and can inadvertently cause problems where independent work and critical thinking are required. Libraries Atwitter: Trends In Academic Library Tweeting, Darcy C. Del Bosque, Sam A. Leif, Susie Skarl

Purpose – This paper aims to present an overview of how libraries are using Twitter in an academic setting.

Design/methodology/approach – This study analyzed the current state of 296 Twitter accounts from a random sample of academic libraries. A total of 19 different criteria were explored, with an emphasis on the following three categories: layout and design, content and number of tweets, and account followers.

Findings – Only 34 per cent of libraries in the study had a Twitter account and characteristics varied widely among libraries, however it is evident that it is possible to successfully communicate with patrons via …

Conclusion: The students received good grades from Phase I library instruction, however did they really learn what we targeted? We could not really say for sure. This case study reveals that an appropriate method and instruments are imperative for retrieving valid data. This case also displays the importance of collaboration and teamwork. Communication was always open between all members of the team as well as with the library instruction department. There is a lot of discussion about the “Me Generation” of millennials being less philanthropic than previous generations. Some claim that Gen Xers and Millennials do not “give” as much as baby boomers. But is this the case? Are there generational differences in philanthropy? The presenter will share information gathered from the professional literature regarding generational differences toward philanthropy, and discuss strategies for building multigenerational advisory and fundraising boards. She will also discuss ways to engage the next generation by learning about their passions and developing messages that resonate within contemporary communication streams, including social media.

Ebook Collection Analysis: Subject And Publisher Trends, J. Cory Tucker

Purpose – This paper aims to provide an assessment of an ebook collection in an academic library, and attempts to locate usage trends by subject and publisher.

Design/methodology/approach – The research was based on: three years of usage data from two e-book packages: NetLibrary and Ebrary; two methods of purchase: NetLibrary was a one-time purchase; Ebrary is purchased on a subscription basis. The research evaluated usage difference over time between the two packages and analyzed subject and publisher usage.

Findings – The research found that Ebrary showed increased usage over time; NetLibrary demonstrated decreased usage; subject analysis showed ebooks in …

Librarians teach. It might not be what we planned to do when we entered the profession, or it may have been our secret hope all along. Either way, we teach. We teach users of all types, including students, faculty, and our co-workers. We teach in multiple venues including classrooms, reference desks, face-to-face, and online. While the variety of teaching audiences and environments are endless, one teaching scenario remains quintessential: the one-shot library instruction session. No one knows better than librarians the limitations of this format, yet it remains central to our teaching efforts.

A recent special issue of the Journal of Business & Finance Librarianship focusing on business librarianship and entrepreneurship includes many case studies detailing entrepreneurship outreach initiatives from academic libraries. The introductory article, "Entrepreneurship Outreach: A New Role for the Academic Business Librarian" by Karen MacDonald, outlines entrepreneurial outreach initiatives in the issue, stating that they “describe three very different approaches libraries have taken to align themselves with a key mission of the university – economic development” (MacDonald, 2010, p. 159). Resource Description and Access or RDA is a set of guidelines and instructions on resource description and access for the cataloging of library materials covering all types of content and media. RDA is the successor to the second edition of the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR2) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AACR2, the current standard set of cataloging. This new set of cataloging rules was needed to bring together different editions and formats of a work, to fit better with emerging technologies, and to be a better way of cataloging digital materials. This talk is an introduction to RDA.
