This treaty was an important transaction formed by the federal government with a number of prominent American Indian tribes of the Great Plains. For years libraries have hired hundreds of student workers to maintain crucial functions in the library. Without student workers, libraries cannot provide essential services to the university community. Yet limited research exists on how libraries have developed professional career tracks for student workers and library staff. Investigators from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Southern Illinois University Carbondale developed a survey to determine what portion of library employees started as student workers and to what extent there is career mobility within academic libraries. Librarians and staff were surveyed and participated in focus groups to share stories about their start in libraries. …

In 1990, ARL published SPEC Kit 165 Cultural Diversity Programming in ARL Libraries and SPEC Kit 167 Minority Recruitment and Retention in ARL Libraries. Both of these documents provided a wealth of information about library programs and services that addressed the needs of a diverse user group, minority staff recruitment and retention strategies, and approaches to managing an ethnically/culturally diverse workforce. This paper confronts the challenge of constructing language documentation and data management in the face of continually expanding sets of crosslinguistic multi-media data arising in collaborative language acquisition research. It describes the development of an infrastructure and methods for creating and managing such shared language data across a Virtual Center for Language Acquisition(VCLA) by fostering collaborative scientific research in the language sciences across multiple institutions. The infrastructure reflects a research lab/academic library collaboration that integrates metadata organization in research methods. History: While rare books and manuscripts have been acquired since the University of Nebraska was founded, it was not until the 1970s that a concerted effort was made to create a separate Rare Books and Special Collections unit. During the 1970s, librarians identified rare books or special collections within the existing general collections, identified new space for these materials, cataloged them, created collection development criteria, and began providing services through the assignment of the first full-time special collections librarian. In early 2007, staff from the University of Minnesota Libraries and the Office of the Vice President for Re-search began a collaboration to present a workshop covering grant resources. The session introduced fa-culty, staff, and graduate students to four key databases of external granting opportunities as well as intramural funding sources. We explain the context, development, and implementation of this ongoing, popular workshop; mention extensions of the workshop effort; and hope to inspire fellow librarians to identify and explore routes to broad institutional engagement.

The American Petroleum Institute, in cooperation with the National Bureau of Standards, initiated its Research Project 44 in 1942. The project was designed to provide reliable information on the thermodynamic and thermophysical properties of selected hydrocarbons and their sulfur-containing derivatives. This information was needed to support the massive demand for fuel, lubricants, and other petroleum products during World War II. The tables containing this information were originally produced in loose-leaf form for refineries, chemical companies, and universities. The tables were subsequently issued in book form in 1948.
