Forty-three years of employment at the University Libraries have encompassed remarkable changes in collection, organization, and distribution of information in the University community. Card catalogs and files of paper serial records have disappeared, and acquisition of library materials is now a highly automated process. The Libraries staff has grown and diversified as our delivery systems evolved. Branch libraries have disappeared as electronic search and delivery systems became more common and easy to use. In 1870, the Five Civilized and other tribes within the Indian Territory initiated a series of council meetings to deal with seven federal stipulations presented at Fort Smith in 1865 and with new treaties established in 1866. One development was the so-called December 1870 Okmulgee Constitution, fashioned in the Creek capital, that provided a model for a new full-fledged Indian state to replace the Territory. Various versions of the text of that document (and of a revised rendition) were published, as part of the official and unofficial record of the sequence of proceedings. Earlier this week I was “upgraded” from MS Office 2007 to MS Office 2010. In addition to the annoyance of hours spent reconstructing my former settings and toolbars for Word, I also discovered another issue: Word files saved as PDF refused to embed some fonts, specifically those deriving from Excel or other charts and graphs inserted into Word documents.

Previously, Word 2007 had interoperated with an Adobe Acrobat plug-in to properly convert such files and embed all fonts according to Acrobat’s preference settings. But for Word 2010, there is no working Acrobat plug-in, and Microsoft has proudly included their own …

The use of classroom technology to assist with teaching has evolved over the past 40 years. The standard chalkboard, chalk and eraser morphed into the white board and markers; overhead projectors sit in inventory while digital projectors hang overhead in the classrooms. All the classrooms at McCollum Hall have been remodeled, transformed or built to accommodate technology use by faculty and students. Vladimir Levenshtein’s edit distance algorithm is used to reveal disparities between delimiter stripped texts of the Senate amended Treaty of Fort Laramie with Sioux, etc., 1851 as corrected in a previous study, and of other federal copies of this transaction. All of the latter deviated markedly from that newly created version, reflecting errors of exclusion, of the absence in some transcripts of the Senate modification, of editorial decisions made by Charles J. Kappler during the preparation of his treaty compilations at the beginning of the twentieth century, and of spelling. These results confirmed that the instrument was until now …

The collective holdings of CARLI’s (Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois) “I-Share” catalog total approximately 32 million items.  It is the third largest academic catalog in the United States, however only 76 of CARLI’s 148 academic libraries participate in I-Share.  This descriptive survey examined the factors that influenced a CARLI academic library director’s decision to join, or not join, I-Share’s integrated library system.  Seventy-seven of the 145 CARLI library directors sampled completed the web-based survey.  This represented a 53.1% response rate.

Connecting Print And Electronic Titles: An Integrated Approach At The University Of Nebraska-Lincoln, Judith A. Wolfe, Joan Latta Konecky, Dana W. R. Boden

Libraries make heavy investments in electronic resources, with many of these resources reflecting title changes, bundled subsets, or content changes of formerly print material. These changes can distance the electronic format from its print origins, creating discovery and access issues. A task force was formed to explore the enhancement of catalog records to increase the connections between print and electronic titles, thus improving patron discovery and access to electronic resources. The investigation considered the relationships between parent and dependent titles, title changes, and publication subsets. The resulting recommendations included interdepartmental cooperation, record-display best practices, and methods for tracking catalog-record enhancements.

A technique developed for the MONK Project, schema harvesting, provides a useful platform for facilitating the digital conversion and curation of text corpora. The author describes Abbot, an XSLT-based application that has had success in converting various Text Creation Partnership collections, and others, during and after MONK.
