Peer learning and class participation are essential components of the active learning classroom, so what can you do to promote full student engagement with your tried-and-true activities in a once-and-done information literacy session? Take them to the wall! Padlet (www.padlet.com) provides a free, multimedia-friendly wall which can be used to encourage real-time, whole-class participation and assessment. No special equipment or technical know-how required. Find out how one librarian has used Padlet to help students create memorable, collaborative artifacts of classroom learning experiences. Mining The Blob: There’S Gold In The Directory!, Kathryn Lybarger

When running reports from Voyager, we usually focus on the fields deemed important enough to index, and avoid the blob version of the MARC records whenever possible. For some questions, however, the blob is not just the only way to the answer, but a surprisingly fast way as well. Though MARC is mainly used as a method to communicate bibliographic data, the format itself contains an index that can be used to quickly determine the broad shape of a record's content. Tomcat WebVoyáge is an elegant structure of directories and files. Many files work together to create an interface skin. Basic knowledge about what the files do, copying patterns and punctuation allow you to customize a skin for your special purpose!

With the rise of alternate discovery services, such as Google Scholar, in conjunction with the increase in open access content, researchers have the option to bypass academic libraries when they search for and retrieve scholarly information. This state of affairs implies that academic libraries exist in competition with these alternate services and with the patrons who use them, and as a result, may be disintermediated from the scholarly information seeking and retrieval process. Partnership Between Library And Graduate School For Electronic Theses And Dissertations, Adrian K. Ho

This presentation describes how the library and the Graduate School at the University of Kentucky collaborated to streamline the thesis and dissertation submission process. The outcome was that the Graduate School implemented an electronic thesis and dissertation mandate in Fall 2013 and students now submit their theses or dissertations directly to the institutional repository, which enables immediate free online access to their research.

Order Matters: Typology Of Dual-Degreed Law Librarians, James M. Donovan

To a great extent law librarianship has regarded the dual-degreed librarian as too familiar and uncomplicated to merit extended attention. The present discussion challenges this assumed simplicity. The nature of professional education is to work on deeper personal levels to create a particular identity and to inculcate specific values necessary to the successful practice of the vocation. Such fundamental effects are neither easily erased nor superseded by a later professional indoctrination. Understood in this way, professional education produces an outcome that defies the commutative property. Order matters. Librarians who go to law school (i.e., “libyers”) should be discernible from lawyers …

Many of us define success in the classroom by the quality and quantity of student participation, but despite our best efforts, there are substantial barriers in place that discourage students outside of the vocal minority from getting more involved in our classes. This paper describes the use of a "graffiti wall" as found on Padlet (padlet.com) to overcome some of the challenges involved in class participation in order to encourage whole-class collaboration and engagement.

Academic Libraries And Automation: A Historical Reflection On Ralph Halsted Parker, C. Sean Burns

This paper provides a historical account of Ralph Halsted Parker and his work to automate libraries in the early to middle parts of the twentieth century. One of Parker’s motivations to automate stemmed from a desire to professionalize academic librarianship, and this is evident in his administration as library director at the University of Missouri. Importantly, the motivation implies a simple means of judging the critical use of technology: that any substantive technology should be evaluated by how well it benefits librarians. This is a report from the series of studies addressing the issues related to recycled paper. The state of recycled papermaking in the 18th-19th century Japan is briefly summarized, followed by an ongoing corroborative experiment to recreate recycled paper and book covers.

Enhancing The Care Navigation Model: Potential Roles For Health Sciences Librarians, Jeffrey T. Huber, Robert M. Shapiro Ii, Heather J. Burke, Aaron Palmer

This study analyzed the overlap between roles and activities that health care navigators perform and competencies identified by the Medical Library Association's (MLA's) educational policy statement. Roles and activities that health care navigators perform were gleaned from published literature. Once common roles and activities that health care navigators perform were identified, MLA competencies were mapped against those roles and activities to identify areas of overlap. The greatest extent of correspondence occurred in patient empowerment and support.
