How Institutionalized Are Model License Use Terms? An Analysis Of E-Journal License Use Rights Clauses From 2000 To 2009, Kristin R. Eschenfelder, Tien-I Tsai, Xiaohua Zhu, Brenton Stewart

This paper explored the degree to which use terms proposed by model licenses have become institutionalized across different publishers' licenses. It examined model license use terms in four areas: downloading, scholarly sharing, interlibrary loan, and electronic reserves. Data collection and analysis involved content analysis of 224 electronic journal licenses spanning 2000-2009. Analysis examined how use terms changed over time, differences between consortia and site license use terms and differences between commercial and noncommercial publisher license use terms. Identifying the most important individuals, institutions, universities, and other academic activities related to scientific production can help in collaborating and also exchanging information in various fields of science. Scientific cooperation plays an important role in promoting qualitative and quantitative scientific publications. One of the forms of collaboration is co-authorship in which two or more authors collaborate to create scientific work. Co-authorship relationships form collaboration networks that can be analyzed and visualized. The structure of networks like co-authorship can reflect the degree of internal collaboration and show the changes of information through time and other variables

While earning a Graduate Certificate in Archives and Special Collections through The University of Southern Mississippi, a practicum at an archive or special collection was required. This obligation was fulfilled at the Billups-Garth Archives in the Local History Room of the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library in Columbus, Mississippi, during the spring of 2012. As part of the practicum requirements, archival collections were processed and research was conducted to document the context and history of a specific collection that is the focus of this study.

The Hattiesburg Coca-Cola museum is currently only opened for special company events and festivities, but there has been discussion of increasing availability to the museum. Even though this collection is currently closed to the public, it is valuable to the company because it generates feelings of pride regarding workers and provides a record of their history working in the community and surrounding area for over 100 years. This paper details the work done in a practicum at the museum.

The 46th Annual Fay B. Kaigler Children’s Book Festival will be held April 10-12, 2013, at the Southern Miss Thad Cochran Center. It looks to be another exciting year as the highlights will include awarding of the 2013 Southern Miss Medallion to recipient Jon Scieszka and a musical performance by four-time Grammy nominated folk-rock children’s music group Trout Fishing in America that will be open to the public.

Mississippi has the highest teen birth rate in the nation and over half of the teens in high school have had sex. This article discusses the facts about the state of Mississippi and why there is a need YA fiction and non-fiction in libraries dealing with sex & sexuality. It provides some brief tips for defending books in the library’s collection and a booklist of recommended titles.

Fines, infringement, imprisonment; these words are resounding with librarians, faculty and students all over the country as they try to navigate the maze of copyright laws. There is help available to all who seek to understand how, when, and how much of another’s work they can use in creating original works, furthering research, and enhancing classroom presentations or assignments. This paper seeks to identify the major copyright issues and pitfalls, and then looks at solutions and aides for librarians, faculty members or students who wish to stay within the copyright laws.

An Analysis Of Little Red Riding Hood Storybooks In The De Grummond Children’S Literature Collection, Cheryl Pittman

The focus of this study was an analysis of one fairy tale currently located in the de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection in order to determine the extent of the collection as well as characteristics of the collection of Little Red Riding Hood illustrated storybooks. It includes analysis of year of publication to indicate the oldest version in the collection, publication trend over time from 1966 to 2010, culture or country of origin, and authorship. Adult-themed books in Cook Library that are related primarily to the topic of LRRH were also examined.

Building on the foundation of condition surveys that span the last 30 years, the current research provides library administrators at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Joseph Anderson Cook Memorial Library with information that can be used to plan mitigation strategies, create preservation policies, and further develop the existing preservation services to ensure that the collection remains accessible for future students and scholars. The award-winning Hancock County Library System, consisting of four branches within the southwest corner of Mississippi, was dealt a devastating blow on August 29, 2005, as Hurricane Katrina made landfall and ravaged the Gulf Coast. The Waveland and Pearlington branches of this library system were destroyed. The headquarters branch in Bay St. Louis and the Kiln branch sustained critical damage as well.

A citation analysis can provide useful data for collection development in libraries. It can be used to determine collection usage and to make decisions such as which items to discontinue and which to add to existing collections. A rise in popularity of digital format paired with dwindling library budgets has made selection and exclusion of collection materials an all too regular routine in many libraries. A Content Analysis Of Cinderella Illustrated Storybooks Housed In The De Grummond Collection, Kimberly Smith

This study screened 71 “Cinderella” illustrated storybook titles housed in the de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection and published from 1984-2004 for specific expressions of the animal helper theme—identified as “common incidents” by the sourcebook, Cinderella: Three Hundred and Forty-five Variants. The study sorted and classified the “Cinderella” illustrated storybook titles into three major groups—Traditional, Multicultural, and Alternative—and further classified the Multicultural storybooks as African-American, Anglo-American, Asian, European, Latino, Middle Eastern, and Asian. It determined which of these storybooks most commonly made use of the animal helper theme variant. The results of the study revealed that the “Cinderella” illustrated …

At the Mississippi Library Association Annual Conference in October 2011, attendees at our focus group and at other encounters requested that we provide more information about the process and importance of accreditation by the American Library Association. It is a topic frequently discussed but sometimes the details are lost. In general, accreditations are designed to ensure that educational bodies conform to standards that assure the employer population that students are exposed to the appropriate tools and situations.

A Call For Action: Mississippi’S Need For Minority Librarians, Stacy Creel, Elizabeth Haynes

Recently, The University of Southern Mississippi’s School of Library and Information Science successfully recruited ten minority students in the following specialties: three public, three academic, two general, one special and one school for “The Minority Scholarship Initiative.” The scholarship was funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Service’s Laura Bush 21^st Century Librarian Program and created in partnership with the Mississippi Library Commission and The University of Southern Mississippi Libraries. Currently, the minority enrollment at the university is 40%. The minority enrollment for the MLIS is 17%; however; it falls to 11% when not including the aforementioned scholarship …

The Imls Minority Scholarship Initiative, Xinyu Yu

The IMLS Minority Scholarship Initiative at the University of Southern Mississippi’s School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) is a three-year (2009-2012) project to increase the number of underrepresented minority librarians in the state. Southern Miss SLIS (Xinyu Yu, Principle Investigator) and University Libraries (Ann Branton, Co-Principle Investigator) have partnered with the Mississippi Library Association (MLA) and the Mississippi Library Commission (MLC) for the recruitment of students and professional mentoring. Through targeted recruiting of minority undergraduates in Mississippi's universities and colleges, the project awarded IMLS-funded scholarships to support 10 students earning a master's degree in librarianship.
