Information Sources Used By Postgraduate Students In Library And Information Science: A Citation Analysis Of Dissertations, R. I. Echezona, V. N. Okafor, Scholastica C. Ukwoma

This paper is a citation analyses that assesses references of theses submitted to the Department of Library and Information Science at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka from 1997 to 2007 The results revealed that journals are cited more than other information resources, and online resources cited were very rarely from 1997-2005, but increased from 2006 and 2007. College and Research Libraries is the most cited journal. The major subject area covered in their research is library management/administration; user studies, information communication technology, and collection development while bibliometrics, preservation, special and public libraries were less commonly researched.

Information has pragmatic value for scientists for research and development. In the changing industrial climate in the North Eastern Region of India, institutes like North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST) play a significant role. NEIST is an R&D institute and a reservoir of technologies that have added to the rural development of the region. The Information Gateway is the online library of the National Open University of Nigeria. It is a gateway to a wide range of online information resources, each of which provides tools that help navigate the contents. This paper appraises the status and importance of online resources available in the Information Gateway and the enabling technology for the effective functioning of the National Virtual Library.The paper also appraises the online services in the e-library and makes recommendations for enhanced service delivery and use of the online resources to boost e-learning in Nigeria.

Lis Professionals’ Staffing Patterns: Pakistani Public Sector Universities, Nosheen Fatima Warraich, Kanwal Ameen

Competent staff in university libraries are essential for the delivery of quality services and research productivity. This study explores the staffing patterns of LIS professionals in the university libraries (ULs). It also investigates the level of satisfaction of library directors with the available professional staff. A questionnaire survey was conducted in 20 public sector ULs of the Punjab province. The findings reveal that most libraries (79%) are understaffed (including unfilled vacancies) and library directors are not satisfied with the number of available staff. All libraries used print advertisements to publicize job vacancies.

A familiar dialogue is taking place in the professional literature of records and information management. Since the early 1990s, the theoretical foundation of a records management theory has been constructed on convergence (Pemberton & Nugent, 1995; Walters, 1995; Zawiyah M Yusof & Robert W Chell, 2002). While certain concepts are shared across disciplines, arguably the most foundational definition is the most divergent: a record. The paper examined the factors that affect paraprofessional staff motivation and performance in academic libraries. It underlines the importance of well-motivated staff in ensuring a continuously maximized performance. The literature review comprises relevant papers which discuss how motivation is used to modify behavior of staff to improve performance. It explores Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and its application to the category of staff under study. Training and development of paraprofessional staff were some of the benefits highlighted.

The paper examines the role of communication in effective reference services. Specific objectives include examining the effect of communication on reference services, discovering the duties of reference librarians, determining the impact of interpersonal communication on reference services, and identifying barriers to effective communication. Inferiority complex, stereotypes, etiquette and decorum, boundaries in relationships, low level of education, and frustration due to poor working condition were identified as some of the barriers that impede effective communication in reference services. Over thirty years of legislation since the Copyright Revision Act of 1976 has redefined how academic library professionals view their responsibilities regarding copyright oversight of their print and digital collections, as well as how they have disseminated intellectual property information to their constituencies. This article presents a qualitative evaluation of how copyright information is disseminated on twenty ARL websites—including how sampled sites communicate copyright leadership roles on campus and webpage "best examples". This paper studies the Internet as an information source for research scholars and PG students of the Science faculty, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), India. A structured questionnaire is distributed to the research scholars and the PG students of Science Faculty, AMU. The study shows Internet-based information sources are more useful than print sources. This study also indicates the Internet is most satisfactory source of information. There are many related studies on the use of Internet but this study is the first of its kind within the specific user community and specific geographical area.

Database searching practice in central university libraries in India was the focus of this study. Eight central university libraries were selected on the basis of their bandwidth use ranking and grouping. Seven universities have been member of University Grants Commission-Infonet Consortia. Databases are available in seven of the eight university libraries are: ACS, AIP, APS, Annual Review, BWP, CUP, IOP, ISID, JCCC, JSTOR, OUP, RSC, SIAM, Springerlink, and Taylor & Francis. This study explores student preferences to library website vocabulary and compares the data with what librarians report on their library's website. Two questionnaires were distributed in the fall of 2009 to students (N=300) and librarians (N=527). Students were asked to identify the terms they prefer from a larger list of library website vocabulary. Librarians were asked to report the terms that were used on their library's website. Twenty-seven terms were selected for both the student and librarian questionnaires. The 27 terms were culled from library literature, library instruction classes, and reference desk interactions. In the IT era, academic libraries and information centers have radically changed the information environment in higher education institution with the introduction of electronic resources. This paper examines the use of the Internet by the members of Social Science Faculty of Annamalai University. The results indicate that the use of Internet services by the faculty members is associated with an increase in the number of research papers and with improvement in the quality of research and teaching.

There has been a flurry of interest in patron-driven acquisitions in the library literature of late, but there has also been some suggestion that libraries are hesitant to incorporate patron-driven acquisitions into their collection development models. This article reviews the findings of the several case studies in the literature in the hopes that this will aid librarians who are still considering whether or not to implement a purchase on demand program for books and similar materials requested by patrons.

This paper discusses the provision of library and information services to Nigerians in the twenty first century and how to overcome the challenges associated with it. The particular issues addressed include: classification of the information user communities, planning considerations, challenges, and consequently the way forward. It concludes that the provision of library and information services to Nigerians is a critical requirement for Nigeria's development, and the numerous challenges identified are surmountable through the strategies enumerated in which proactive approaches by the library and information professionals themselves are the most crucial.
