How Do You Know That? An Investigation Of Student Research Practices In The Digital Age, Randall Mcclure, Kellian Clink

Library Services Publications

This study investigates the types of sources that English composition students use in their research essays. Unlike previous studies, this project pairs an examination of source citations with deeper analysis of source use, and both are discussed in relation to responses gathered in focus groups with participating students and teachers. The researchers examine how students negotiate locating and using source material, particularly online sources, in terms of timeliness, authority, and bias. The researchers report on how teachers struggle to introduce these concepts and how students fail to perceive authority and bias in their sources.

The Moving Image Work-Level Records Task Force of Online Audiovisual Catalogers (OLAC) Cataloging Policy Committee (CAPC) was charged with investigating and making recommendations on issues related to FRBR-based work-level records for moving image materials, including, but not limited to:

• Identifying characteristics of moving image works (possibly with some indication of relative importance) that should be included in work-level records and creating operational definitions of these characteristics.

Playaway devices were developed in 2005 by Findaway World LLC. (http://store.playawaydigital.com/). A Playaway is described as a “self-playing digital audio book” and is a device that contains a pre-loaded audio file in a proprietary format called ACELP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algebraic_Code_Excited_Linear_Prediction). The device requires one AAA battery and a set of earphones for playback and listening. Playaways contain almost exclusively spoken word recordings, but some musical content is available as well.
