Preparing for a university anniversary is no easy feat! From in-house research to anticipating researcher needs, digital collections at Minnesota State University, Mankato have been invaluable as we begin celebrating the sesquicentennial of the university. In this lightning-round-style session, University Archives staff will present on current digital projects that have been instrumental as we embark on the 150th anniversary of the University. Topics will include: prioritizing digitization projects, digital collections and social media, use of institutional repository to present university publications, collaborations with campus departments, maximizing student involvement, and so much more.

Capturing Graduate Research: Creation Of The Graduate Online Symposium At Minnesota State University, Mankato, Heidi J. Southworth

In 2017, Library Services at Minnesota State University, Mankato, in collaboration with our College of Graduate Studies and Research, launched the first annual Graduate Online Symposium. This event was designed to showcase the research, scholarly and creative activities of our graduate students. Rather than presenting at an on-campus forum, we gave our graduate students (both on-campus and off-campus) an opportunity to be able to share their research in an open, online environment. At Minnesota State University, Mankato, we've created a collection analysis system that is unique for at least two reasons: (1) we can combine a wider variety of data than we’ve seen elsewhere, (2) we can combine that data more quickly, more efficiently, than we’ve seen elsewhere. Because we can combine data efficiently, we have created reports approaching new kinds of problems. We can be more responsive as a library to the needs of our academic departments. My goal in writing this chapter is to use critical disability theory grounded in my lived experience to offer some possibilities for improving the working conditions of library employees with disabilities. I begin by providing an overview of some mainstream and critical perspectives on disability. Next, I offer my own insights into being a disabled librarian by taking an intersectional approach to the construction of power. I conclude the chapter by suggesting some ways to bring theory and practice together to make the workplace more inclusive of people. The achievement gap “refers to a difference between the academic achievement of linguistic and ethnic minority students, students with disabilities, students from low socioeconomic status backgrounds, and female students, and either the mainstream student population in general or the white student population more specifically” (Odekon, 2015, p. 7). There are as many causative factors as there are rocks on a beach in Alaska. While books and articles may refer to these and act as a finding aid, I find it valuable to have a certain familiarity with federal, state, and nonprofit organizations that publish timely and authoritative research reports. Best Practices for Cataloging DVD-video and Blu-ray Discs Using RDA and MARC21 builds upon the work of the 2008 Guide to Cataloging DVD and Blu-ray Discs Using AACR2r and MARC21, which in turn updated the 2002 Guide to Cataloging DVDs Using AACR2r Chapters 7 and 9 created by the DVD Cataloging Task Force of OLAC.

The focus of this new document is to provide a set of “best practice” recommendations rather than a step-by-step instruction manual for cataloging DVD-video and Blu-ray Discs. One reason for this shift is that RDA cataloging practice is far from settled, particularly in regard …

Libraries face many challenges in managing descriptive metadata for ebooks, including quality control, completeness of coverage, and ongoing management. The recent emergence of library management systems that automatically provide descriptive metadata for e-resources activated in system knowledge bases means that ebook management models are moving toward both greater efficiency and more complex implementation and maintenance choices. Automated and data-driven processes for ebook management have always been desirable, but in the current environment, they are necessary. Many libraries have not yet taken advantage of specialized MARC fields for music and for characteristics of representative expressions in their discovery interfaces. This poster shows one approach to display, search, and faceting of selected fields using Ex Libris' Primo. For example, it will demonstrate how data in fields such as 382 (medium of performance) and 257 (country of producing entity) were manipulated using Primo norm rules.
