Exploring Stakeholder Priorities For Recent Mlis Graduates And Early Career Librarians, Lenese M. Colson, Nicole D. Alemanne, Linda R. Most

A multi-phase research project was conducted to understand the future skills and competencies expected of new MLIS-degreed librarians. Phase one found the two largest categories of challenges include understanding the mission of the library and funding issues, with other categories including staff skills, hiring and retaining staff, technology, operations and policies, and outreach. Phase two explored stakeholder priorities for competences expected of new MLIS graduates and librarians finishing their first five years of employment. The highest priorities for new MLIS graduates are related to skills and basic knowledge, while areas such as management and leadership, lifelong learning, and information resources …

I'M Responsible For What?: Selecting For Topics You Know Nothing About, Eric Buckenmeyer

This case study details the author’s experiences selecting books for a subject he knew nothing about. Most librarians are asked at some point in their career to take on responsibilities that they do not feel prepared for, so the author hopes this article will help readers adapt to those unfamiliar duties. The author discusses the challenges he faced within Kennesaw State University’s team-based liaison model, his attempts to do evidence-based selecting, and the lessons he learned along the way. In the end, librarians tasked with selecting on unfamiliar topics may benefit simply from doing their best, relying on the available …

Over the years, the emails from my students have embodied a broader and broader range of formality. Emails with no subject lines, no salutations, and very little detail are the norm. While sometimes frustrating, I can’t fault my Gen-Z students for writing to me the way they would text a parent: this is the way they’ve grown up communicating. Korean Immigrants’ Perceptions Of Library Services And Library Multicultural Programs For Asian Communities Before And During Covid-19, Yanghee Kim, Hyun Chu Leah Kim, Jihye Kim

This study explored 141 Korean immigrant parents’ use of local libraries to enhance their families’ social and cultural capital and adjust to the host country. We searched resources in Korean, and multicultural programs planned for the public and immigrants, Asian immigrants in particular, at two libraries before and during COVID-19. Parents reported dissatisfaction with library services because of language barriers (38%) and the lack of Korean resources (38%) and cultural programs (25%). Except for 18 books and 24 e-resources, no library resources in Korean were published after 2008. Before COVID-19, one multicultural program was offered for children. At Branches B …

Managing Sustainability And Scalability With Successful Archival Projects: Two Lone Arranger, Dual-Role Archivist Case Studies, Autumn M. Johnson, Ann E. Merryman
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
Two lone arranger, dual-role archivists are faced with highly successful, yet outsized, collaborative projects that have placed unexpected demands on time and resources. The archivists describe their successful projects which similarly engage students with primary source archival materials in innovative ways, from expanding the use of the institutional content management system (CMS) for student creators to providing career-relevant training to German language students. While these projects provide opportunities for institutional and community recognition and engagement with the archives, they require the archivist to consider ways to manage sustainability, scalability, and assessment of their collections along with their overwhelming workload. The 2023 Black History Month program at The Art Institute of Atlanta is described. The program entailed the use of LibGuides to assist students in identifying figures in African American history, specifically individuals who were pioneers in the students' fields of study. Students were provided access to a large paper banner to create tributes to the figures they discovered using the LibGuide.
