Use of the USMARC Archives and Manuscripts Control (AMC) format and the automation process necessary for archival and manuscript repositories to utilize a computer information system designed to centralize the storage, manipulation, and retrieval of bibliographic and collection management data are new phenomena for many archivists. Information systems such as OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) and RLIN (Research Libraries Information System) provide an attractive opportunity for repositories which desire to participate in the use of AMC at the national level, while other systems are operational at the local, state, and regional levels. Seneca, Roman politician, poet, and essayist, succinctly echoed the Roman view of cooperation, efficiency, and practicality when he wrote "one hand washes the other." Centuries later archivists are still struggling to learn and apply Seneca's maxim. Although archivists have not successfully implemented Seneca's maxim in the realm of cooperative appraisal, they have for some time recognized the need.

The Women's Collection at the Northwestern University Library is like the triathlete: it attempts to engage in that which only extraordinary people or fools try. Like the triathlete, it is sustained by the goal it has set for itself. The Women's Collection documents the activities of activists in the women's liberation movement by collecting materials generated by these activists. The "engagement" or involvement of the curator of the collection is critical to this enterprise, because of the nature of the work. Since the turn of the twentieth century, the state of Alaska has attracted professional and amateur filmmakers eager to document the northern wilderness and its inhabitants. Existing films on Alaska include thousands of feet of historically precious, unedited footage as well as studio productions; they are in demand by research specialists, educators, and filmmakers, as well as nonprofessional Alaskan citizens. Responding to that demand, administrators of the Rasmuson Library at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks launched the Alaska Archival Motion Picture Program to preserve film footage on Alaska and the circumpolar regions and to make it available to a …

In this article, the term politics is used in a broad sense to suggest that there are definite, though not always explicit, assumptions and values affecting the nature and extent of the documentary record preserved on social movements in this era. Though of main concern in this discussion is how values affect the collecting of materials on radical social change, the value systems under which archivists operate affect any kind of collecting endeavor.

By now the archival community has begun in earnest, though not always cheerfully, to participate in that special sector of the information revolution which involves the MARC (Machine Readable Cataloging) formats created by the Library of Congress. Most especially, many archivists are beginning to make use, or planning to begin to make use, of the recently published USMARC Archival and Manuscripts Control format, generally known as the MARC-AMC format, or simply AMC.

Documenting The Gay Rights Movement, Elizabeth Knowlton Jr., Lofton Wilson

Archivists must take an active role in collecting gay records. They cannot depend on traditional, passive techniques to document either the gay rights movement or the lives of homosexuals in America--unless they are so naive as to expect these records to appear miraculously on their shelves. More likely, as with other social reform movements, records will be lost in the daily living of people who have too little time and money to document and observe the immediacy of their lives.

Georgia has 159 counties, 187 school systems, over 500 chartered municipalities and numerous local boards, commissions, and authorities. Many are experiencing dramatic growth, and that is straining their resources and necessitating change in their traditional operations. Preservation of the historical record is a responsibility recognized by Georgia's local government officials. This fact is supported by requests to the Department of Archives and History, by laws passed by the legislature, and by recent studies.

The Archives of Appalachia at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) recently attempted to improve subject access to its holdings through the development of a computer-based subject access system. The project and the subject access system have been given the acronym "ACSAS" (pronounced access), for "Archival Computerized Subject Access System." This article describes the subject access system and its development and concludes with an analysis of the system and the future role of such systems.

Historians who venture beyond the traditional realms of political or diplomatic history find themselves similarly venturing beyond traditional sources for their history.
