The article reports on the Ashley Bryan Children's Literary Festival hosted by Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System's Auburn Avenue Research Library on African-American History and Culture presented on April 25 and 26, 2008. The children's literacy program celebrated the contribution of Ashley Brayan to children's literature with interactive and educational programs and events that introduced children of all ages to culturally relevant art, literature and poetry. The conference was attended by teachers, librarians and parents and many children.

The article reports on the groundbreaking ceremony held by the Heard County Chamber of Commerce and the city of Ephesus at the new Ephesus Public Library site in Heard County, Georgia on May 20, 2008. The new library will be located just behind Ephesus Elementary School. Notable personalities present at the groundbreaking include Mayor Denney Rogers, Ephesus City Council members and Jim Cooper, director of West Georgia Regional Library. The public library will be part of the West Georgia Regional Library System.

The article presents a chronology of significant events in the history of Georgia's public library service from 1809 to 2008. In 1809, a subscription library was opened by the Savannah Library Society. In 1900, Mayors S. B. Price and Bridges Smith of Macon established the Price Free Library for the poor. From 1933 to 1934, jobs in public and school libraries in Georgia were created by the Civil Works Administration. In 2000, libraries in Georgia started to purchase and install equipment and software through funding from the Gates Foundation. As of 2008, there are 61 library systems, 33 regional library …

At present. integrated library system (ILS) upgrades and migrations seem to be coming faster and more frequently. The reasons for this trend are many. among them being: 1) hardware upgrades are common due to the need for more memory to run the software; 2) software upgrades and migrations are desired because of the promise of new or improved features; 3) changes in system vendor ownership can affect changes in their software; 4) software and hardware upgrades are needed due to the advanced age of either or both; and 5) system upgrades on a yearly basis may be necessary to prevent …

Using The Tools Of Crisis Intervention And Empowerment Counseling In The Reference Interview, Wendy S. Wilmoth

The article explores similarities between reference service and the concepts of empowerment counseling, as defined by the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape, and crisis intervention, as defined by the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault, in the hope of enabling academic librarians to provide assistance that is informative and relevant to patrons who may be survivors of sexual assault. It is inferred that reference interview is important to providing the best library service possible. The role of reference librarians in giving empowerment counseling and crisis intervention to sexual assault survivors is discussed.

The Center is being hosted and supported by the DeKalb County Public Library since its creation in 1998. The free public programming has the Center has brought more than 400 national and regional authors to the Atlanta metropolitan area and the state of Georgia. The article reports on the decision of Alice Walker, a Pulitzer Prize-winner and internationally known Georgia-born novelist and poet, to place her archive at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. In the Spring of 2005, on a trip to Atlanta, an article in the US Airways Magazine, August 2005, p. 75, caught my attention, "Universal Literacy: And How Room to Read Contributes To That Goal," by Michael Ybarra. Michael described how John Wood in 1998 quit his job as a marketing director at Microsoft to go trekking in Nepal. Invited by a local teacher to visit a classroom of a village school at Bahundanda, Wood described the conditions to be appalling--80 kids in one grade with 20 books described as backpacker castoffs-for example.
