Smartphone Apps For Disasters: Workshop Lesson Plan, Paul Levett

This instruction was designed to be delivered to a Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) or a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

Instructional Goal #1: Using a personal smartphone connected to the internet, learners will download medical information apps, before deployment to a disaster environment.

Instructional Goal #2: Recalling real and simulated patient care situations that required additional medical information, learners will identify and search smartphone apps for relevant, current, authoritative, medical information that could be applied to the care of individual patients in disasters.

This poster provides a review of interim results from a qualitative study on first year medical students' attitudes and perceptions of their definition of medical professionalism in social media. Included in the study is an evaluation of changes in perspective since becoming a medical student and after participating in an E-Professionalism and Social Media instructional session.

Objectives To describe how librarians became involved in helping to design curriculum for Problem- Based Learning (PBL) Course for first- and second-year medical students. Librarians became part of a team collaborating with medical faculty to revise the PBL curriculum, incorporating innovative teaching techniques and creating effective simulated patient case scenarios.

Methods In August 2010, the PBL Director contacted the Library to help revise 10 cases for second-year problem-based learning course. Two librarians joined the PBL multi-disciplinary curriculum team meeting bi-weekly to create and revise medical tutor and student guides, and case modules. In recent years, librarianship has been increasingly recognized as a critical component of inter-professional healthcare education. This manuscript describes how innovative coordination between libraries and university healthcare programs can remove the barriers to scholarship for graduate students who enroll in distance education (DE) programs. The authors examined the perceived impact of librarian embedment for DE nursing students graduating with master’s degrees from George Washington University in 2013. Librarians were embedded in the first course in which they were enrolled in 2010 to support the mastery of scientific research skills. E-Learning Modules

This small group, case-based exercise is geared towards medical students on their pediatric clerkship. The goal of this session is to teach students how to re-frame their clinical questions into a format that allows for more effective and efficient searching of the literature.

I provide this session once a month as a part of the Third-year medical student core lecture series during their inpatient pediatrics rotation. My co-facilitator is a medical librarian. This poster presentation is a collaborative effort of librarians from Lamar Soutter Library, University of Massachusetts Medical School; Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library, The George Washington University; and Louis Stokes Health Sciences Library, Howard University. International medicine initiatives often occur through institution specific efforts. Yet information needs extend across borders and institutions. Three American health sciences libraries have united to support the development of health sciences libraries in Liberia. While separate schools will support undergraduate and graduate medical education initiatives, the libraries are working together to bring current information resources to all health care professionals.

Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library librarians worked closely with the George Washington University internal medicine residency program to provide training and support; however, many residents seemed unaware of the library's collections and services. To strengthen the relationship between the library and the program and to enhance residents' use of information resources, a librarian was assigned to attend the residents' daily morning meeting at least twice each week.

Closing The Loop: Integrating Snapps Into An Outpatient Morning Report To Foster Self-Directed Learning And Encourage Use Of Evidence Based Medicine, Julia Magana, Jimmy Beck

E-Learning Modules

This resources describes a novel approach to outpatient morning report. This format encourages self-directed learning as well as teaches residents to use the clinical literature to ensure they were providing optimal patient care. Each resident daily chooses a clinical question from that day's patient care, investigates and brings the answer back to the group during morning report. This resource includes a description of the integration and implementation of this format as well as the handout used by the residents.

Since the implementation of our new morning report format, our residents have consistently read about their patients on a nightly basis. …
