Predatory publishing has become an increasing problem in recent years. Due to a lack of awareness about predatory publishers, faculty authors are at risk of harming their reputations by publishing their research in questionable journals. Librarians can play a vital role in educating faculty authors about this important topic. This session will review a variety of outreach and educational efforts that have been successful in educating faculty about the risks of predatory publishing at Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library including the creation of a comprehensive LibGuide, faculty consultation services, workshops, and social media posts. Himmelfarb Library Faculty Publications

Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library was an early health sciences library adopter of web scale discovery with introduction of a customized instance of EBSCO’s Discovery Service (EDS) in 2012. After three years with EDS, the library initiated an evaluation project involving two user surveys and a library staff focus group to assess user satisfaction with the service. Resulting changes included introduction of widgets to improve access to clinical content, addition of radio buttons to the search box to make defaults easier to enable and disable, and a custom course reserves search feature. The improvements launched fall semester 2016.

The George Washington University (GW) has held annual Research Days highlighting research done by students and residents. During spring 2017, GW’s Himmelfarb Library proposed a video series capturing students’ research experience and participating in GW’s Research Days.

The primary goal of the video series was to promote GW research achievements on both a school and individual level. The short video interviews provided participants with a new method to share their work, discuss their experiences and highlight the research conducted at their school.

: Inquiries about new informatics instructional opportunities in the curriculum led to a suggestion that the librarians submit an elective proposal. Despite knowing nothing about the approval process or the responsibilities of being a course director, several librarians accepted the challenge as a learning experience. Developing the proposal included writing the proposal, formally presenting it to two curriculum committees for approval, and then creating the specific lesson plans, identifying associated readings, creating a grading rubric and syllabus, and teaching the specific elective sessions. Examining The Gap: Compensation Disparities Between Male And Female Physician Assistants., Noël Smith, James F Cawley, Timothy C Mccall

BACKGROUND: Compensation disparities between men and women have been problematic for decades, and there is considerable evidence that the gap cannot be entirely explained by nongender factors. The current study examined the compensation gap in the physician assistant (PA) profession.

METHODS: Compensation data from 2014 was collected by the American Academy of PAs in 2015. Practice variables, including experience, specialty, and hours worked, were controlled for in an ordinary least-squares sequential regression model to examine whether there remained a disparity in total compensation.
