Transfabing: Taking The Library From A Place Of Consumption To Creation, Peace Ossom Williamson, Katie Musick Peery

Re-think it: Libraries for a New Age

The presenters will discuss the conceptualization and creation of the University of Texas at Arlington FabLab in the Central Library. A fab lab, or a fabrication laboratory, is a space providing software and equipment to be used in digital fabrication. These spaces provide users the opportunity to work with other creative and inventive individuals and provide them with open access to technology. The UTA FabLab is a teaching facility focused on the application of cutting-edge technology in the development of professional skills, including teamwork and iterative design knowledge as well as specific technical knowledge.

Re-Thinking Community Needs Assessment to Drive Value

Lanell White, MSI

The information environment has continually changed over the past several years. Libraries face many challenges: changes in mission and strategy, restructuring, stagnant budgets, shrinking teams, increased scope of responsibility, and pressures to transform information delivery. At the same time, end users have grown to expect ubiquitous access to content across a variety of devices, with tools for learning, analytics, visualization, and productivity seamlessly integrated.

Now more than ever, it is critical to have a fact-based understanding of community needs so that the library can successfully deliver information products and services …

From Dandelion Seed To Cottage Garden: The Transformation Of User Experience In The Msu Libraries, Christine Tobias Aug 2015

From Dandelion Seed To Cottage Garden: The Transformation Of User Experience In The Msu Libraries, Christine Tobias

Re-think it: Libraries for a New Age

The user experience movement is gaining momentum in public and academic libraries. While it is not a new phenomenon, its adoption and adaptation into a library’s organizational culture can bring unexpected challenges. In June 2014, the MSU Libraries created a User Experience (UX) unit in the Public Services division and in a short time, has established a solid and reputable team of UX practitioners. This success, however, was not achieved overnight.

The transformation of user experience at the MSU Libraries began as a solo effort of one librarian who understood the importance of assessment practices in library services. Through planting …

Building Fundraising Momentum: Message, Relationship, And Alliance Essentials, Mary M. Somerville Aug 2015

Building Fundraising Momentum: Message, Relationship, And Alliance Essentials, Mary M. Somerville

Re-think it: Libraries for a New Age

To raise $33M for facility renovation, Auraria Library leaders used user-centered principles and practices to catalyze constituency engagement, create shared vision, and build stakeholder partnerships. In particular, participatory design outcomes informed and energized essential fund development activities: to create messages, further relationships, and forge alliances. These fund raising essentials distinguish the Auraria Library signature approach to fundraising.

Message building: In 2009, library staff learned to apply mixed methods to generate user-generated research results. They exercised these new proficiencies in an investigation, over several months, of student learning needs. ‘Paper and pencil’ surveys, focus group sessions, and participant observation logs generated …

Conversations-Aspirations: Services Reimagined, David Votta, Michelle Bradley

Re-think it: Libraries for a New Age

In the fall of 2013, the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS) staff began training in the process and framework of the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation; part of ALA "Libraries Transforming Communities" initiative. The basic tenet of the Harwood philosophy is the concept of "Turning Outward"; literally changing one's orientation to the community and not inward to your own organization. From the Harwood Institute; "Turning Outward makes the community and the people the reference point for getting things done."

Concurrent with the training MCLS began utilizing the new skills to conduct Harwood "community conversations" across the region. Conversation attendees …

Where You And I Are Going To Spend The Rest Of Our Lives:” What A Future Library Looks Like When There Is No There...There, Corey Seeman Aug 2015

Where You And I Are Going To Spend The Rest Of Our Lives:” What A Future Library Looks Like When There Is No There...There, Corey Seeman

Re-think it: Libraries for a New Age

In the notably bad 1959 film, Plan 9 from Outer Space, filmmaker Ed Wood, Jr. opened with Criswell making the prophetic statement: “We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future.” For many of us, including Criswell, the future is far off towards the distant horizon. We’ve talked in library circles about things such as Google glass, drones, self-driving cars, 3D printers, etc, but our core work has not really changed …

Architects, Tod Stevens, Karen Fairbanks, Jeffery Scherer

Re-think it: Libraries for a New Age

For whom are we designing libraries? Architects from Stantec, Marble Fairbanks, and MSR Design discuss how they strategically design libraries to align with the pressing needs of their communities. Panelists will explain how utilizing new data tools allows them to think differently about the design process; as well as how the shifting paradigm of academic libraries from books to social spaces is informing the built form. Three case studies in the Re-envisioning Branch Libraries research project will also be presented.

We're All In This Together: Mentoring In Academic Libraries (Poster), Matt Ruen, Cara Cadena, Betsy Williams

Presentations

Navigating a new job can be difficult for both new and experienced librarians. How will you learn “the way we do things here”? Mentoring can play a key role in helping librarians find their way to becoming effective professionals. Grand Valley State University currently has several formal mentoring programs for new librarians, in addition to informal mentoring. Our poster will discuss GVSU’s mentoring programs and the purposes they serve—acclimating to university culture, developing position-specific skills, and successfully participating in the scholarly process. We will include our experiences and perspectives as recent participants in these programs. This discussion will include insights …

Sowing The Seeds Of Success: Community Collaboration For College Readiness, Gayle Schaub, Lindy Scripps-Hoekstra

Presentations

The challenge of creating information literate college students begins long before freshmen enter the university classroom. This poster details a unique collaboration between a university, a community foundation, and a public school to offer middle school information literacy workshops, using threshold concepts as a basis for its curriculum. This approach to community engagement offers ideas others may want to consider about moving collaborative information literacy initiatives beyond the campus.
