Join members of one university library’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) Committee to learn about their journey from IDEA to IDEA 2.0 over the course of a few years. This library took steps to move beyond simply educating their colleagues to actively reviewing and addressing systems level issues. They will share their challenges and progress with a number of initiatives. These initiatives include drafting a detailed IDEA framework for the library, conducting an organization-wide policy and culture audit, facilitating library-wide action-oriented workshops, incorporating IDEA goals for all individuals and departments, and leveraging systems-thinking to empower individuals to be leaders …

Archives To Go: Creating A Virtual Primary Source Instruction Packet, Leigh Rupinski, Meghan Martinez

This case study examines the process of creating a virtual primary source instruction packet using the Young Lords in Lincoln Park collection. The authors hoped to create a packet of scanned primary source materials from the collection that could be taken and used by any faculty instructor, at GVSU or beyond, without additional facilitation by archivists. The packet would complement instruction and enrich students’ experiences when archival visits were not possible for a variety of reasons. The authors scanned primary source documents and created a full lesson plan including primary source literacy learning objectives. The desired outcome was a packet …

Change management is often process-centered instead of people-centered. People are centered when we focus on what is good. Appreciative Inquiry’s strengths-based, positive approach to organizational change allows leaders and facilitators to re-center individuals’ voices.

Appreciative Inquiry helps people move toward a shared vision for the future by engaging others in considering what is good, what could be, what should be, and how to co-create the future. It can foster equitable processes that decenter whiteness and deficit-mindset. This presentation will explore perspectives on inclusive hiring practices from both sides of the table. Grand Valley State University Libraries developed inclusive recruitment and high-empathy hiring practices, which they implemented in 2018. The Dean and a past diversity resident team up to dissect the hiring process from both of their perspectives. Annie Bélanger discusses the work behind critically examining the existing hiring process, designing an inclusive recruitment plan, and implementing a new structure in order to ensure empathy to applicants going through the process. Graduate students in master of library and information science (MLIS) programs face competitive job markets, and while many students work while studying, it is a challenge to gain meaningful and relevant work experience. This chapter discusses the role of advocacy in the graduate student work experience. We argue that self-advocacy, while a practical necessity for many graduate students, is problematic due to its roots in neoliberal ideals of individualism. Drawing on our own recent graduate school experiences, we will explore ways that self-advocacy both helped and harmed us. In 2017, Grand Valley State University Libraries began developing a diversity residency program. The Libraries wanted to go beyond a commitment to diversity and inclusion. We wanted to move to an active practice of inclusion, equity and accessibility. The early steps were to re-envision its hiring process in collaboration with the Division of Inclusion & Equity, while crafting a partnership towards the diversity residency.

Representation In Collections: An Mlis Student Research Project To Increase Diversity In An Academic Library's Collections, Cara M. Cadena, Erica Schiller

As part of a university-wide initiative, an MLIS practicum student under the collections manager was charged with determining the current level of diversity, recommending methods for improvement, and articulating strategies for maintaining diversity in collections going forward. Topics of discussion include assessment strategies for e-journals, successes and pitfalls, and insights gained from faculty in relevant departments.
