In my last column, I discussed the issue of faculty status, trying to analyze why librarians have failed to achieve their most desired target -- academic respectability. I concluded that faculty culture does not accept librarians as equals. Yes, librarians may be useful -- they may eve be expert in what they do -- but they are different. Faculty may be ready to grant librarians something, but it is not equal status. Maybe it is time to examine the need for status that librarians exhibit.

For me, it is even more; it is sheer joy to give tribute to a woman who has during our longstanding professional relationship been a source of inspiration, a model of integrity, and a continuing influence. Probably all of us in this room can list only a few people besides family members who have made a major impact on us. I would list this lady's name.

he Board of Directors of the Association of Christian Librarians honored an unsung hero when it selected Stephen P. Brown to receive the 1999 Emily Russel Award. While his contributions to ACL may be unknown by many, they are certainly known and appreciated by those who have been involved in the leadership of this Association anytime in the last twenty plus years. Perhaps no one knows all of the things he has done behind the scenes to keep this Association functioning and viable.

The first TCL issue of the new year is now under my belt. As the new Design Editor, the January 2000 TCL was a labor of love. It was also one of trial and error. I learned how to logically arrange the pages and articles within the issue. I experimented with various graphical changes but tried to keep a recognizable style in the grand TLC tradition.

While a number of Christian librarians have explored the implications of the Christian world view for particular issues in library practice, few have attempted to develop a thoroughgoing philosophy of Christian librarians/zip. Those who have done so have generally failed to center their proposals around the Christian view of truth. The knowability, objectivity, unity, practicality, and spirituality of truth should impact the way librarians at Christian colleges carry out major library functions, including collection development, reference services, bibliographic instruction, research and publication, and management.

This year's conference was different. I brought my sisters, Mary Mitchell and Sandra Edster, along. We enjoyed some real vacation time, although they did more vacationing than I did. Still, ACL Conference offers so many opportunities for fellowship that it is the most pleasant of work.

On-site evaluations, training workshops, automation projects and blitz cataloging are four ways Christian librarians can assist through short visits overseas. Oral history began as oral tradition, the passing down of information from generation to generation. Now we commit most everything to "paper." However, there are still places in the world where the passing of history is truly an oral tradition. Within our own families, oral tradition is the main way most of us retain our favorite family stories. Unfortunately, by not recording these stories, they frequently undergo changes as they pass from parent to child, also, with the advent of technology and the decline of the extended family, these family stories are becoming lost.

Anticipation: Sailing Into Conference, Anne-Elizabeth Powell

rrnerly Pasadena College (Est. 1902), the spiritual, academic and cultural community that would become Point Loma Nazarene University moved to San Diego from Pasadena, California in 1973. Spanish for Hill, the word Loma is both an apt description of the site on which the University rests and an indication of the cultural influence of the Spanish on the region. Located on cliffs above the Pacific Ocean, PLNU is graced by ocean views at nearly every turn.
