This article’s goal is to discuss the relationship between reading, writing and power. (Unfortunately, space forbids more than an introduction to this topic.) We live in a postmodern society where some people doubt whether truth is knowable. I will show that the power of the written word is great enough so that receptive readers can overcome the barriers against understanding it as the author meant it, and therefore reading can teach the truth. The desire of librarians at Nyack College, like other academic librarians, is to play a significant role in the development of effective research and critical thinking skills in the community we serve. But the challenges of having no room for a 1-credit required course in the core curriculum, cultivating faculty and student ownership of a campus-wide information literacy program, the integration of information literacy skills at the discipline, course and assignment levels, and development of appropriate assessment tools for measuring the effectiveness of the information literacy program seemed daunting.

Information Literacy chapels can be an effective means to supplement other library education strategies. They offer a unique opportunity to address the entire student body at one time. When I go to a restaurant, I always order the same thing. At the theater, I always choose the same type of movies. When I go in a bookstore, I always head in the same direction: first, new paperbacks (because the heft of a hardback makes reading in bed awkward); then the sale tables and mysteries; followed by adult fiction, occasionally history, then finally, the children's department.

The Theological Research Exchange Network (TREN) provides a gold-mine of information for theological libraries but has previously made this information available primarily 111 microfiche format. Librarians and computer personnel at Crown College in Minnesota worked together with TREN to make this information available 111 full-text electronic format through the library online catalog. This article explains the process so other interested librarians can work with TREN to do the same.

Many small college libraries employ only one professional. T hat means one person serves as reference librarian, cataloger, acquisitions specialist, circulation supervisor, inter-library loan officer, periodicals manager, information literacy instructor, and administrator- as well as conm1ittee member and sometimes teacher. In the November, 2000 issue of College & Research Libraries, Michael Fesmire and Elizabeth Young had a fascinating article entitled, "Free Scholarly Electronic Journals: What Access Do College and University Libraries Provide?" In the article, they discussed the rapid growth of these free, academic, peer-reviewed journals on the Internet that covered all different subject areas. Through careful effort, the authors had located over 200 scholarly, full-text, peer reviewed journals, many of which were indexed in major services such as ERIC, Medline, MathSciNet, INSPEC, and C henucal Abstracts. The Association's Board of Directors met in October in Cedarville, Ohio. It was a busy and productive time. We reviewed work that is in progress in the Association office to improve record-keeping and the ability to provide data needed for planning and marketing. A process was begun to periodically survey ACL members on their satisfaction with services and products. Service standards were drafted by which to measure performance of ACL staff, officers, teams, and individual appointees. The surveys will enable us to revise the standards to better reflect members' expectations.

The new Ministry Resource Center (MRC) of Calvin College and Calvin Theological Seminary is a premiere collection of practical resources for all aspects of congregational ministry. To help MRC patrons locate appropriate resources, the College and Seminary s Hekman Library has created a website that combines information from manually created static webpages and bibliographic data imported from the Library s online catalog. The result is one website that gathers together, and provides access to, the entire MRC collection.
