Navigating The Information Highway: A Multilayered Approach For First-Year Graduate Students, Lana J. Wilson, Ashley N. Chu

Taylor University’s Zondervan Library developed a multifaceted approach of engagement with graduate students of the Master of Higher Education and Student Development program, utilizing a variety of venues and courses relating to advanced research and writing. Regular assessments provided feedback for improvement within the embedded program structure. A second component of this model involved an archival project, which facilitated student research with primary documents in the university archives. Overall, graduate student understanding and ownership of the research process increased, and teaching faculty noticed improvement in the quality of research-based assignments as well as the program’s thesis project.

This article presents guidance for librarians in the selection and recommendation of Bible translations. Pairing a reader with an appropriate Bible requires clear understanding of patron reading level and intended purpose along with a general knowledge of the major translations and their key characteristics. Bibliographic details and annotative summaries of the 10 best-selling Bibles in the United States are included. Ranking is based on the latest unit sales data released April 2014 by the Association for Christian Retail.

Despite the increasingly digital nature of information retrieval, both users and computers continue to occupy physical space, and the library – as place – offers an essential location for inspiration. In an age when one might assume that the digital negates the physical, a finite place can root the individual within space regarding both composition and information retrieval. In this seeking for the essentially human element of the physical book within space, we may also discover a need for the library as place.

Christian Librarians And The Library Bill Of Rights: A Survey Of Opinions And Professional Practice, Scott Kaihoi

This study used a survey methodology to discover how Christian librarians working in academic libraries responded to the American Library Association’s (ALA) ethical standards as embodied in the Library Bill of Rights (LBR). The results showed that while the Christian librarians surveyed largely support the LBR and adhere to it professionally, their interpretation of its sometimes ambiguous language is made through the lens of a Christian worldview and can conflict with the ALA’s interpretation. Investing In The Student Staff Development Process, Jeremy Mcginniss, Joshua B. Michael

This paper argues for the need for librarians to invest in the student staff development process, particularly in the context of biblical higher education. The foundational pieces of hiring, training, development and assessment which inform the student staff development process are defined and explored to see how they should fit into the library context. Examples from the library literature coupled with practical experience provide a framework that encompasses theoretical and pragmatic application. This paper narrates how a particular library worked through this process while providing principles from which libraries of varying sizes of collections and staff can benefit.

Using Prezi As A Library Instruction Tool, Amy James

Prezi is a cloud-based presentation tool that is built with the help of many open source projects. Not only in Prezi free, but users also gain access to video tutorials, live online training sessions and webinars given by Prezi experts; and community forums where users can talk about problems, give tips, and learn from one another. Signing up for the “Edu Enjoy” account with an .edu email address provides additional benefits. This article will cover the features of Prezi, discuss pros and cons, and will conclude with ways to successfully incorporate Prezi into information literacy instruction sessions.

The Effect Of Library Orientation On Library Knowledge, Lilli-Anna Baca

Previous research shows that the anxiety of not knowing how to use the library is a major factor in the decline in library attendance. In this study, the hypothesis was that the knowledge and attitude of students who participated in the library orientation would positively increase. A survey was emailed to 150 students of John Brown University (JBU) measuring their pre and post library orientation knowledge and attitudes of the library. The results of the study showed an increase in library knowledge, t (53) = -10.01, p = 0.007, d = 7.33, an increase in confidence in using the library, …

An increasing number of university and college libraries have started digitization programs, and there are good reasons why they are doing so. First, we are in the middle of revolutionary change as to how ideas get published and distributed. Over 50 percent of scholarly publishing has gone digital, and over 20 percent has gone open access. Patron-Driven Acquisition Optimization And Workflows At Liberty University Jerry Falwell Library, Erin Crane, Lori Snyder

In the spring of 2010, the Liberty University Jerry Falwell Library began a pilot patron-driven acquisition program with the e-book aggregator ebrary. In the fall of 2012, the program had been active for two years, and the librarians sought to optimize the program in the form of selecting more titles which are used. This paper describes the formula that the librarians used to achieve optimization in the PDA program. Also described is the workflow involved with acquisitions and cataloging before and after the purchases are made.

A Different Kind Of Embedded Librarian: More Than Just A New Office, Brad Doerksen

An increasing number of colleges and universities are embracing the concept of the embedded librarian. The goal is to put librarians into the physical space where students and faculty are most likely to encounter them rather than waiting for patrons to come to the library. This article asks if just doing the same thing differently is enough. A different kind of embedded librarian may be needed – one who has a regular teaching load in a curricular discipline, thereby better connecting the library with the classroom end of delivering the educational mission to the benefit of everyone.

Baruch The Scribe: Preserver Of Knowledge And Model For Librarians, Roger White Ed.D.

This article discusses how the Old Testament character Baruch serves as an inspiration for contemporary Christian librarians. Events from his scribal career parallel several common experiences of library professionals including archiving materials, maintaining and promoting a collection, dealing with criticisms from administrators and community leaders, and becoming weary from overwork. How he handled himself in the midst of these activities is noteworthy as is God’s response to his service. The life and legacy of Baruch provide several parallels and encouraging lessons applicable to all those called to serve in libraries.

The reference interview provides a number of opportunities for Christian librarians to model the integration of faith and learning. When conducting reference interviews, librarians may have the chance to: 1) show a willingness to go the extra mile, 2) provide users with tools for seeking information successfully, 3) discuss information ethics, 4) exhibit openness to different points of view, and 5) demonstrate commitment to seeing individuals as God does. More Than Just A Number? The Impact Of Age And Generational Affiliation On Christian Academic Librarians’ Beliefs About The Future Of Librarianship And Higher Education, Kimberley Wilcox

This article investigates the relationship between academic librarians’ demographic characteristics and their beliefs about the future of academic librarianship and higher education. The researcher administered a survey to a group of academic librarians at Christian colleges and universities, with the intent of identifying possible correlations between particular demographic characteristics, such as age and generational affiliation, and four pre-established belief constructs. Statistical analysis of the survey results revealed that no significant differences exist between age groups, generational groups, experience levels, geographic locations, or type of institution with regard to Christian academic librarians’ beliefs about the future of academia and academic libraries.

Technology is transforming many venues. Some suggest that the transformation is happening much too quickly, others suggest not quickly enough. As Christians, we have a responsibility to observe this technological transformation through the lens of faith and act upon what we learn.
