Senator Horace Chilton's memoirs of growing up in Tyler, Texas, during secession, Civil War and Reconstruction, including an account of the emancipation of the family's slaves. His father, George Chilton, belonged to the Knights of the Golden Circle, was a delegate to the Secession Convention, and served in the Third Texas Cavalry, then as ordnance officer under Gen. Bee. He was elected to Congress after the war but was denied his seat.

Historians have traditionally viewed the Westward Movement in terms of the male experience and ignored the role of women completely. Because the woman's role in the settlement of the West was often a domestic role, it has been assigned little importance. Women were, however, instrumental in the pioneering of the West, especially in the Midwest and Great Plains. History textbooks often provide little information on women. The use of supplemental materials will, therefore, greatly add to a student's understanding of women and their contributions to American history. The interest In the Vietnam War is Increasing after years of being ignored. The body of literature about the Vietnam War is growing rapidly. Using this literature in high school courses to study the war is encouraged. Using literature to study a historical event personalizes it for the students.

The researcher read 45 novels and personal narratives about the Vietnam War. Each novel was tested for four values and inclusion of stereotyped secondary characteristics. One or more of the following values was present in 80 percent of the works: American involvement was wrong, American commanders were incompetent, South Vietnamese soldiers …

Dorchester House has remained a vital part of its community since it was established in 1887. Beginning as a one-room industrial school in the Fields Corner neighborhood, Dorchester House has grown from a settlement house into a modern, multi-service center offering a wide range of social, educational, recreational, and health services to people of all ages. Over the past one hundred years, Dorchester House has continuously met the ever changing needs of the Dorchester community.

During the late 1730 and early 1740s, enslaved African Americans in the British colonies of North America rose up in several independently organized revolts and conspiracies in vain attempts to win their freedom. Maryland was the scene of one of these acts of resistance. According to local contemporary accounts, Prince George’s County escaped massive violence in 1739 only because a conspiracy was discovered and suppressed before the revolt could be executed. The civil authorities apprehended the alleged conspirators and tried them for rebellion and attempted murder. The leader of the conspiracy, an enslaved man named Jack Ransom, was put to …

The Northwood Public Library of Northwood, Iowa, was founded on January 29, 1907, with the first meeting of the Northwood Library Association. The library opened to its 109 subscribed members on April 26, 1907. On October 14, 1925, the Northwood Library became the Northwood Public Library. 3tate library officials assisted the Northwood Library's Board of Trustees with the planning for the operations of both the subscription and the public libraries.

This paper will show the growth and expansion of the Library of Congress. Through the co-operation of Mr. Spofford and Congress, the Library is one of the finest in the world. In order to survive and grow, many obstacles had to be overcome. The two main ones were: The copyright law and the new classification system. However, more material had to be obtained as well as a new building constructed with a staff to distribute the materials. This paper will show that even though Mr. Spofford had many hardships he did not give up.
