Interpreting Workplace Learning In Terms Of Discourse And Community Of Practice, Adrian K. Ho

Based on the ethnographic data collected from the workplace of an academic library, I argue that workplace learning (WL) is a situated socio-cognitive process. It is expedited by knowledge management (KM), which is a collective effort to generate, share, and institutionalize work-related knowledge. KM is inherent in the face-to-face conversational interactions embedded in planned formal training, planned informal sharing, and spontaneous informal learning. When face-to-face interaction is not possible, KM is accomplished through textualization. It helps the members of the workplace acquire new work-related knowledge and integrate it to their common, contextualized knowledge base. The contents of the knowledge base …

To create a dynamic, exciting library and museum, which will be an asset to both Western Kentucky University and the community at large, a number of changes in our normal operations need to take place. The problems are each addressed below; storage, new gallery space, new exhibits, and new operating procedures to better meet the needs of the community and the campus. This plan will address each aspect of the anticipated changes, and set some priorities. All changes described will be consistent with the strategic plans of the University Libraries and Western Kentucky University.

Emphasis has been placed on recruitment, internships, scholarships, and other partnerships by library science schools and libraries to attract new people to the profession. Even so, applicant pools are dwindling [Simmons-Welburn and McNeil, 2004] and many institutions have been forced to rewrite job ads after initial postings to locate a qualified candidate. Research questions were defined to investigate the differences between libraries and computing services units in the perceived organizational climate, professional burnout, organizational climate vs. burnout, demographics vs. organizational climate, demographics vs. burnout, and the combined effects of demographics and organizational climate upon burnout. The Work Environment Scale (WES) Form R, third edition, the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) HSS, third edition, and a demographic questionnaire measured the organizational climate, burnout, and demographics. …

Demographic trends show that the population of librarians in the U.S. is rapidly aging. This paper examines the ways that library managers can make workplaces more attractive to older librarians in order to encourage them to remain in the workforce beyond retirement age. The article dispels some negative stereotypes of "the older worker" and shows the advantages of retaining individuals with experience and maturity. It also addresses organizational climate, management, and training issues related to older workers.

This article examines several developments in electronic technology which appear to hold great potential for advancing human well-being and community organization and have already manifested some important portion of that potential in recent years. They are, in order of presentation, electronic communication and networking, electronic advocacy, fund raising support, geographic information systems and data base management. We conclude this brief article with a brief discussion of information poverty and the growing disparity of information haves and have-nots.

Individuals with disabilities are one of the fastest-growing segments of United States society. In 1970, 11.7% of the United States population was limited in activity, a major factor in measuring and identifying people with disabilities. In 1990, because of the aging of America, 13.7 % of the population could be so identified. By 1994, 15% of the population fell into this group. During this latter period, the older population stayed fairly stable but children and younger adults with disabilities increased greatly. Information Needs Of Foreign Women In Malaysia, With Special Reference To The Sudanese Community, Samia Mohamed Malik

The primary aim of this study was to assess the information needs of foreign women in Malaysia, with a particular focus on the Sudanese community. The study identified the main information needs, the sources they used to find the information, their use of the library and the types of materials they utilized in seeking information. A postal questionnaire was used for data collection. Ninety copies of questionnaires were distributed to the Sudanese women living in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya. The study analyses trends in research activities in the sciences using data from theses submitted to the University of Malaya between 1971 and 1995. A total of 101 theses in nine disciplines in the sciences were studied during the 25- year period (1971-1995). The study is divided into two parts. Part l is based on the information obtained from the 'Acknowledgement' section of all the 101 theses. It looks at the year of theses submission by discipline, distribution of theses submitted by race and gender of the researcher, and distribution of scholarship/grants and tutorship tenure by discipline. This study analysed Malaysian computer science and information technology research works published within the period 1990 and 1998. The data was collected from three international CD-ROM databases. i.e.. COMPENDEX (1987- 1999), IEL (IEE/IEEE Electronic Library) (1988- 1999). and INSPEC (1990- 1998). The search contributed a total of 389 bibliographic records. Malaysian research contribution in the fields of computer science and in formation technology between 1990 and 1998 indicated two stages of development, i.e.. the exploration period from 1990 to 1994 and the rapid growth period during 1995 to 1998. A six-week university library intern program sponsored by the Job Training Partnership Act investigated the impact on 12 economically disadvantaged young persons facing nationally recognized problems pertaining to inadequate reading and math skills, work ethics, job skills, and motivation to complete school. Participants, predominantly (92%) African-American high school students, worked at Grambling State University, an historically black university, under predominantly (85%) African-American supervisors. Interns received academic enrichment, work experience, and life skills, primarily through pre-testing, classroom training, orientations by departmental supervisor, "hands-on" group projects, written assignments, daily reviews, and post-testing. Building “A Home Of Our Own:” The Construction Of The Lesbian Herstory Archives, Polly Thistlethwaite

Publications and Research

This article traces the founding of the Lesbian Herstory Archives in the context of radical archiving and lesbian institution building. It includes an outline of problems presented by "extra-legal" or outlaw material in archival settings. Discussion of the New York Public Library's Becoming Visible exhibit reflects the 1990s growth of mainstream institutional interest in gay, lesbian, and transgender archives, and the complications this interest presents.
