Investing In The Open Access Book Infrastructure: A Call For Action, Pierre Mounier, Jeroen Sondervan, Graham Stone May 2021

Investing In The Open Access Book Infrastructure: A Call For Action, Pierre Mounier, Jeroen Sondervan, Graham Stone

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Books play an essential role in scholarly communication, notably but not only within the Social Sciences and Humanities. Open science benefits the quality and value of research and scholarship. If open access is to benefit society as widely as possible, it is logical to include academic books. In a 2019 briefing paper, Science Europe reported that: “Open access to academic books must be considered in the wider open access policies developed by research institutions, funders, and governments.”

In recent years, Knowledge Exchange, a joint network of six key national organisations in Europe, has been working on gaining a better understanding …

Article-Level Classification Of Scientific Publications: A Comparison Of Deep Learning, Direct Citation And Bibliographic Coupling, Maxime Rivest Phd, Etienne Vignola-Gagné Phd, Éric Archambault Dphil

Peer Reviewed Papers

Classification schemes for scientific activity and publications underpin a large swath of research evaluation practices at the organizational, governmental, and national levels. Several research classifications are currently in use, and they require continuous work as new classification techniques becomes available and as new research topics emerge. Convolutional neural networks, a subset of “deep learning” approaches, have recently offered novel and highly performant methods for classifying voluminous corpora of text. This article benchmarks a deep learning classification technique on more than 40 million scientific articles and on tens of thousands of scholarly journals. The comparison is performed against bibliographic coupling-, direct …

Building Synergy Between The Institutional Repository And Scholarly Communication, Emily Kilcer, Lauren Puzier, Carol Anne Germain

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

Institutional repositories remain a crucial tool for promoting, displaying, and encouraging open access to scholarly research. Institutional repository webpages can help deliver pertinent information about scholarly communication to visitors and authors. Scholarly communication aims to promote a more open, equitable, and sustainable scholarly ecosystem. Building a coherent synergy between scholarly communication services and open distribution through an institution’s repository benefits the user community by facilitating an efficient and effective portal. Designing the institutional repository’s homepage with a clear connection to the scholarly communication presence offers a deeper investment in scholarly communication for its visitors. This study investigates the number of …

Rise Up: The Student Research Symposium Goes Online, Anne Shelley Apr 2021

Rise Up: The Student Research Symposium Goes Online, Anne Shelley

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

In Spring 2020, higher education institutions began implementing COVID-related precautions. While course delivery was most influenced by a variety of urgent decisions, also affected were events that were originally (and traditionally) scheduled to take place in-person that semester. While many events were cancelled outright, some were rescheduled or shifted online. At my institution, stakeholders decided to transition the popular annual student research symposium to an online event hosted by the institutional repository. This presentation will provide details of a successful collaboration between the library's institutional repository manager and symposium coordinators in the Graduate School. The presentation will cover workflows, team …

Closing Keynote: Academy-Owned Non-Profit Open Access Publishing: An Approach To Achieve Participatory And Sustainable Scholarly Communications, Arianna Becerril García Apr 2021

Closing Keynote: Academy-Owned Non-Profit Open Access Publishing: An Approach To Achieve Participatory And Sustainable Scholarly Communications, Arianna Becerril García

Digital Initiatives Symposium

The prevailing science communication system has showed little success in making science a global, participatory and equitable conversation. At the same time, a very robust ecosystem of science communication has been built in the Latin-American region, one that is intrinsically open, non-commercial and academy-owned. However, this “regional” approach has remained outside the legitimated channels of scholarly communication.

AmeliCA’s and Redalyc’s approach is based on the fact that scholarly communication in control of the academy is a strategy much healthier and sustainable for the development of science and society. Why is it that commercial publishers are a pivotal actor in science …

Where Is The Social Democracy In Subscription Paywalls? Effects And Impact Of Transitioning Journals From Subscriptions To Open Access On Researchers In Developing And Transition Economies, Colleen Campbell, Rick Burke Apr 2021

Where Is The Social Democracy In Subscription Paywalls? Effects And Impact Of Transitioning Journals From Subscriptions To Open Access On Researchers In Developing And Transition Economies, Colleen Campbell, Rick Burke

Digital Initiatives Symposium

Nearly 20 years after the Budapest, Berlin and Bethesda Declarations on open access, the global academic community continues to struggle toward realizing its objective of an open information environment in which the world’s scholarly and scientific literature is freely available and at the service of society to accelerate research, enrich education and lay the foundation for a common, global intellectual exchange. Championing the cause, stakeholders in some geographic contexts have succeeded in delivering open access publishing options for their research outputs by fostering highly-regarded, locally-developed journals, platforms and repositories, yet a an enormous portion of the world’s scholarly literature continues …

Featured Speaker: Facilitating Oa Transformation Through Publisher Engagement: The Uc Experience, Ivy Anderson

Digital Initiatives Symposium

Libraries across the globe have been pursuing open access for decades, but until recently, progress has continued to be painfully slow. Transformative open access agreements with publishers have begun to change this, as institutions in Europe and increasingly in the US as well are now negotiating open access agreements with major publishers. By transitioning major journal license expenditures from ‘read access’ to support open access publishing, we can begin to achieve open access at scale, supporting our authors in all of the journals in which they choose to publish. This talk will discuss UC’s experience in negotiating transformative open access …

Library Publishing Curriculum

In the original, modular curriculum (2018) on which this textbook is based, each unit of the Library Publishing Curriculum contained an instructor’s guide, narrative, a slideshow with talking notes, bibliographies, supplemental material, and activities for use in a physical or virtual classroom for workshops and courses. This textbook version, produced in 2021, adapts the original narrative as the primary content (with very little additional editing) and incorporates the bibliographies, appendices, and images from the slideshow into a linear reading and learning experience for use by librarians or students learning on their own or as part of a classroom learning experience. …

No Publication Favelas! Latin America's Vision For Open Access, Monica Berger Apr 2021

No Publication Favelas! Latin America's Vision For Open Access, Monica Berger

Publications and Research

Open access was intended to be the great equalizer but its promise has not come to fruition in many lower-income countries of the Global South. Under-resourcing is only one of the many reasons why these scholars and publishers are marginalized. In order to examine inequality in our global scholarly communications system, we can compare a negative and a positive outgrowth of this imbalance. Predatory publishing represents a a weak imitation of traditional, commercial journal publishing. In contrast, Latin America’s community-based, quality scholarly infrastructure is anti-colonial. It can be argued that Latin America’s publishing infrastructure represents one solution to predatory publishing. …
