Purpose The Internet poses both a frontier that represents the possibility for vast exploration and an open space that leaves patients wandering through unreliable information. The purpose of this study was to determine the abilities of first-year (Junior-standing) nursing students to choose, evaluate and then explain their findings in relation to health information on the Web.

Setting/Subjects 108 first-year nursing students in Foundations I at the University of Northern Colorado.

Methodology Content analysis of written papers.

Making Sense Of Dietary Supplements: The Dietary Supplements Labels Database, Annette M. Healy

This article describes the Dietary Supplements Labels Database, a new resource from the National Library of Medicine that integrates information from dietary supplement manufacturers, government agencies, and clinical research into an easy-to-use interface. This database contains information on more than 2,000 brands of dietary supplement and more than 800 active ingredients. This resource will greatly assist consumers and health care providers in evaluating the safety, efficacy, and quality of dietary supplements. Features of the resource will be described as well as the browse and search methods used to access the information.

Addressing the health information needs of diverse, multiethnic, and multilingual communities can be both a challenge and an opportunity for libraries. The Vera P. Shiffman Medical Library at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, is the only academic medical library in the Detroit area open to the public. The library provides services to many communities in southeastern Michigan. The diverse geographic area served by the library includes the nation’s highest concentration of Arab Americans. A review of the literature reveals that limited research has addressed how libraries can meet the health information needs of this target community. An understanding of …

In 2005, the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library made the decision to convert from print to a predominantly electronic journal collection. The conversion was completed in 2007. This poster presentation reports the objectives, guidelines, and results of the print-to-electronic journal collection conversion process.

Objectives: The research provides an overview of the health care management literature and the indexing coverage of core journal literature.

Method: Citations from five source journals for the years 2002 through 2004 were studied using the protocols of the Mapping the Literature of Allied Health Project and Mapping the Literature of Nursing Project. The productivity of cited journals was analyzed by applying Bradford's Law of Scattering.

Results: Journals were the most frequently cited format, followed by books. Only 3.2% of the cited journal titles from all 5 source journals generated two-thirds of the cited titles. When only the health care …

In 2004, a community health outreach partnership, funded by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), was launched. HIPS, Health Information Partners, promoted health literacy and health advocacy for residents of Washington, D.C., who frequented the area community health centers. This poster explores the goals, strategies, and results of the HIPS program.

A cooperative project between two urban academic medical libraries, the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library (George Washington University Medical Center) and the Dahlgren Medical Library (Georgetown Medical Center), was designed to relocate all pre-1980 bound journal volumes to a remote-storage facility. This poster explores the goals, process, and results, both financially and physically, of the collaborative initiative.

Information literacy, often described as a person's ability to effectively find and evaluate answers to questions using a variety of information resources, is of particular importance to health care workers. This paper presents the results of an information literacy survey presented to the occupational therapy (OT) students at Thomas Jefferson University during a series of required class activities. Also described are the authors' activities with the faculty and courses at Jefferson. The survey was made available to first-, second-, third-, and fourth-year occupational therapy students along with nursing students and pharmacy students.
