Pennsylvania was the last state in the country to codify its statutes. Mr. Fishman reviews the various editions of unofficial compilations of Pennsylvania laws that have been published from the early eighteenth century to the present. A bibliography is appended.

In his recent work on A History of American Law Publishing (1990), Professor Erwin Surrency emphasized the need to learn more about how lawyers purchased books in nineteenth-century America, especially since few book catalogs have survived to the present day.1 A random searching of older periodicals located in my library drew my attention to the "Catalogue of Modem Law-Books," consisting of three parts.

With publication of the final law schedule, the Library of Congress classification system for legal materials is virtually complete. Examination of the completed schedules reveals some difficulties for reference use because of the assignment of non-law numbers to law-related materials, the arrangement of certain subjects within the law schedules, and the detailed nature of the law schedules themselves. Law libraries and reference librarians can take steps at the local level to address some of these problems and make the LC classification system more suitable for legal research collections.

The Case Of The Disappearing Briefs: A Study In Preservation Strategy, Margaret A. Leary

Federal appellate court records and briefs are significant to researchers in many disciplines, but academic law libraries are discarding them. Ms. Leary chronicles the demise of paper holdings in law libraries, the rise of microforms, and the contents and usage of the National Archives and Records Administration's files. She then derives principles for preservation strategies that may apply to other categories of legal material.

By the year 2001, Australian academic law libraries will face different challenges than those of today, especially as an increase in library users and a growth in the volume of legal literature can be confidently predicted. The question is to identify these challenges and to define ways to deal with them. Already, academic libraries with limited and decreasing funds, and under-resourced law schools in Australia, are having difficulty coping with the costs of running law libraries in their present form. A central issue will be the availability of funds to cope with given changes, including how to redirect these funds …

When accepting a promotion from outside the organization, the new manager must understand what is being given up and left behind, and must also realize clearly what expectations the new library holds. In the new position, the outside manager must articulate goals and find common ground with supervisors and subordinates. The take-charge period should be used for judicious decision making and intense learning.
