Students start by working individually to develop subtopics and areas of interest from their original topic or research question. Design science research (DSR) generates knowledge that informs problem-solving and has emerged as a viable research paradigm in Information Systems doctoral research. Doctoral research students are, however, confused by the number of options available when selecting an appropriate literature review method for design science research. To inform the selection of an appropriate literature review method, we analyzed the literature review types from 35 design science theses and dissertations in Information Systems. Indications are that the most dominant literature review method was descriptive, and the primary purpose was theory building. To meet the objectives of design science research, we suggest using …

The news is inescapable, and simultaneously headline-laden advertising-as-news follows us on scrolling video screens through public transit, at the gym, and on billboards lining the sidewalks. As the news and its lookalikes feel more and more omnipresent, the need for news literacy skills and their implementation feels more and more urgent. At the same time, continually morphing media platforms and news formats make it seem impossible to know: which of these things actually is the news? What’s most important for me to pay attention to?

Along For The Journey: Graduate Student Perceptions Of Research, Alissa A. Droog, Kari D. Weaver, Frances Brady

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Graduate students’ identities and personal lives are heavily tied to their experiences of research, and many struggle to find, understand, and use information for research purposes. Using a drawing exercise rooted in visual research methods combined with semi-structured interviews, a research team in the United States and Canada explored graduate student perceptions of research with nineteen participants. Thematic analysis identified six themes: research is abstract; research is an odyssey; social support makes or breaks the student experience; research is an emotional continuum; interplay between identity/values; information is problematic. The study has implications for how librarians support graduate student research.

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to reshape aspects of our world, fears and misunderstandings about its implications are widespread. Some of these concerns are rooted in the practices and beliefs of our religious communities. This paper aims to address worries regarding AI and its impact on religion and Christian traditions. It does so by examining the nature of AI and its limitations, stressing the importance of informed discussions within communities. Examples drawn from academic literature, scripture, and prominent figures within the Church are used to illustrate key points. Market validation is essential for assessing the feasibility of a business idea, product, or service but can involve extensive and costly primary and secondary research. Business librarians are well-positioned to support entrepreneurs and researchers but may be constrained by pricey subscriptions for business resources. While most often associated with search engine marketing, keyword research proves to be beneficial for market validation. This paper proposes integrating keyword analysis into market validation practices. It outlines the process of conducting keyword analysis and opportunities for business librarians to incorporate these strategies in their resource guides and programming.

Libraries' discussion of disabilities is normally focused on the patrons who are served and not the em-ployees who work within the walls of the institution. The population of adults with disabilities in the United States is growing, and the current research results show that the number of librarians who iden-tify as having disabilities is not close to equally representing the population in the profession. The author reviews the history of collection development of the vinyl collection at Huntingdon College. With interviews from current and former faculty and staff, the author shows how donations of vinyl al-bums helped propel the extensive quantity of albums. The author discusses how the collection circulated throughout the 1970s to the 1990s, when CDs arrived on the scene. The quick transition to digital streaming along with short staffing has caused these vinyl albums to sit, neglected in a classroom, un-used for decades. The vinyl collection also does not have enough cataloging data for easy discoverability and circulation. The author collaborated …

Strategic Searching And Source Evaluation: Active Learning Teaching Materials, Tricia Martone, Abigail Murdy, Alexis Gomez

Dartmouth Library Workshops and Presentations

During the Librarians Active Learning Institute (LALI) 2024, Alexis Gomez, Tricia Martone, and Abigail Murdy developed a 50-minute active learning session for a fictional environmental studies class needing to write a research paper on a topic of their choice using peer reviewed articles. The bulk of the active learning session was encompassed in the two handouts, which are a jigsaw for Web of Science (20 minutes) and a modified Send-A-Problem (Send Along) activity (20 minutes). The lesson was designed for 6 students, though it can be scaled. In the practicum, the Web of Science jigsaw had 3 groups of 2 …
