Dialogue Is A Bridge: Mapping Information Literacy, Social Justice, And Catholic Social Teaching, Desirae S. Zingarelli-Sweet, Elisa Slater Acosta

Librarian Publications & Presentations

In the spirit of what Pope Francis calls a “culture of encounter” created through dialogue, first we map points of convergence and potential friction between the ALA Core Values of Librarianship, themes of Catholic social teaching, and recent articulations in library literature of what social justice should mean for libraries. Second, we look at ways these differing sets of values can concretely inform how we think about and teach the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education to our students.

  • The attendee will leave this session with starting points for reconciling LIS values and social justice ideas with Catholic …

Workshop leaders will provide guidance on developing a summer program tailored to participants' institution's needs and aspirations. Participants will come away with strategies for identifying stakeholders and partners, developing program goals, selecting digital tools, designing workshops, and methods to incorporate aspects of assessment and sustainability.

Shaping Wikipedia Editing As A Teaching And Learning Tool To Promote Deep Learning And Information Literacy, Nadine Dexter, David Lebowitz Md, Amin Azzam Md Oct 2019

Shaping Wikipedia Editing As A Teaching And Learning Tool To Promote Deep Learning And Information Literacy, Nadine Dexter, David Lebowitz Md, Amin Azzam Md

Southern Chapter/Medical Library Association Annual Conference

Research has shown that at least 94% of medical students use Wikipedia as an information resource (Usaid, 2012), despite medical school faculty telling them not to. In fact, medical schools do not train students to improve Wikipedia or use it critically (Azzam, 2017). The Wikiproject Medicine course was created at the invitation and in partnership with Dr. Amin Azzam at the University of California San Francisco, who started the original program in 2013. This class is offered to 4th year medical students and gives students an opportunity to edit already existing health related articles in Wikipedia to improve their quality …

Elevating Patient Education Through State-Wide Instruction Of Nurses And Patient Educators On Consumer Health Resources, Lindsay Blake, Alice Jaggers

Southern Chapter/Medical Library Association Annual Conference

Background: Patient Education is consistently cited by the Joint Commission as needing work at many institutions. However, with a limited number of patient educators and high nurse to patient ratios it is hard to find the time to adequately teach patients all they may need to know. The goal of this project was to create a course and online guide for nurses and patient educators. Teaching Critical Thinking And Metaliteracy Through Oer: Theory And Practice In A Course Collaboration, Trudi E. Jacobson, Sally Friedman

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

Textbooks are often the primary reference when we think of open educational resources (OER). While these textbooks are important and offer obvious economic benefits to students, the range of OER is wide and growing. In this paper, we introduce a specific set of OER, under the rubric of the metaliteracy framework, designed to strengthen critical thinking and the overall learning capacities of students. We describe a successful collaboration between an instructor of a political science course and a librarian, which employed these resources to enhance the overall student experience and to focus student attention on becoming more active contributors to …

"Being In Time": New Public Management, Academic Librarians, And The Temporal Labor Of Pink-Collar Public Service Work, Karen P. Nicholson

FIMS Publications

Time is a site of power, one that enacts particular subjectivities and relationships. In the workplace, time enables and constrains performance, attitudes, and behaviors. In this qualitative research study, I examine the impact of the values and practices of new public management on academic librarians’ experiences of time when engaged in pink-collar public service (reference and information literacy) work. Data gathered during semi-structured interviews with twenty-four public service librarians in Canadian public research-intensive universities, members of the U15 Group, serve as a site of analysis for this study. Interview data were first analyzed using thematic analysis (Braun and Clarke 2006) …

Innovative Information Literacy Landscapes: Leveraging The Specialized Knowledge Of Lgbtq+ Communities In Research And Practice, Vanessa Kitzie

Faculty Publications

This paper examines how Knowledge School principles can help libraries develop a more nuanced understanding of how social and cultural differences shape knowledge production and dissimi-nation within LGBTQ+ communities. I focus on information literacy (IL), in which practitioners teach individuals to seek, evaluate, and use information. IL can empower communities by enhancing education, confidence, and decision-making. However, libraries often approach IL from a deficit, skills-based perspective by envisioning communities as lacking the requisite knowledge to fulfill their information needs. As a Knowledge School, we need to move away from one-size-fits-all approaches to librarianship. Through research, we can understand how communities …
