Awareness And Acceptance Of Emerging Technologies For Extended Information Service Delivery In Academic Libraries In Nigeria, Williams Torubo Saibakumo Apr 2021

Awareness And Acceptance Of Emerging Technologies For Extended Information Service Delivery In Academic Libraries In Nigeria, Williams Torubo Saibakumo

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Expanding and modernising information services are crucial to the continual existence and patronage of academic libraries in the digital era. Technological evolutions have impelled libraries to incorporate all-encompassing, user-friendly and technology-driven service delivery approaches in academic libraries. Emerging technologies seem to fill this perceived gap. This study brings to light the level of awareness, adoption, preferred and readiness for the incorporation of emerging technologies into academic libraries activities in Nigeria. Amid 18 emerging technologies, adoption is stumpy, only an infinitesimal number (WebOPAC, library website, Cybrary, social media and Institutional repository) considered, and awareness remained high. Technologies like RFID, Integrated Library …

Information Literacy In A Post-Truth Era, Catherine Baird, Jonathan Howell Apr 2021

Information Literacy In A Post-Truth Era, Catherine Baird, Jonathan Howell

University Libraries Scholarship and Creative Works

The founders of American democracy believed it could not survive without an “informed citizenry”. What does an informed citizenry look like in today’s world? And what role do we have as educators and students to support it?

First, we look at the significant challenges to institutional and media legitimacy that emerged in the second half of the 20th century, which rightfully called attention to the ways longstanding Western knowledge practices excluded marginalized communities and silenced important histories. We ask about the status of norms and mores in the aftermath of this challenge, in an era often called “post-truth.”

Second, we …

Embedded Online Information Literacy Using Canvas Commons, David Sye, Megan Wilson

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

As Murray State University began offering more online courses and programs, it became apparent by the spring of 2019 that the Libraries needed to address distance and online learners’ information literacy needs. We were concerned about being able to reach all of the courses that needed instruction, such as courses taught in high schools through our dual credit program. We estimated that only about 30 percent of our targeted general education courses were being reached through our face-to-face instruction program. Although the Libraries previously offered online video instruction upon request, the videos lacked standardization across disciplines and were not available …

Inequitable Impacts Of Textbook Costs At A Small, Private College: Results From A Textbook Survey At Gettysburg College, Sarah Appedu, Mary Elmquist, Janelle Wertzberger, Sharon K. Birch

All Musselman Library Staff Works

Recognizing that higher education settings vary considerably, librarians at Gettysburg College sought to better understand textbook spending behaviors and the effects of costs on our students. We adapted the Florida Virtual Campus 2016 Student Textbook and Course Materials Survey to suit the context of our small, private, liberal arts college. Most students spent $300 in Fall 2019. Financial aid awards did not cover the cost of required books and course materials for most students receiving aid. Negative effects were more pronounced for first-generation students and Pell Grant recipients, who were more likely to not purchase required books, to not register …

Improving College Students’ Fact-Checking Strategies Through Lateral Reading Instruction In A General Education Civics Course, Jessica E. Brodsky, Patricia J. Brooks, Donna Scimeca, Ralitsa Todorova, Peter Galati, Michael Batson, Robert Grosso, Michael Matthews, Victor Miller, Michael Caulfeld

Publications and Research

College students lack fact-checking skills, which may lead them to accept information at face value. We report findings from an institution participating in the Digital Polarization Initiative (DPI), a national effort to teach students lateral reading strategies used by expert fact-checkers to verify online information. Lateral reading requires users to leave the information (website) to find out whether someone has already fact-checked the claim, identify the original source, or learn more about the individuals or organizations making the claim. Instructor-matched sections of a general education civics course implemented the DPI curriculum (N=136 students) or provided business-as-usual civics instruction (N=94 students). …

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Military and veteran students face unique challenges when coming into an academic environment. Libraries can play a role in easing those transition challenges. Fort Hays State University is a comprehensive state teaching university. Roughly 5% of the student population both on-campus and virtual identifies as a currently serving military member or a veteran. The university as a whole is designated as a Military Friendly school and participates in the Department of Education 8 Keys to Veterans’ Success initiative. Forsyth Library supports these efforts through library-specific projects that help military and veteran students connect with academic resources and become acclimated to …

How Accessible Is Online Information Literacy Instruction?, Vincent Larkin Mar 2021

How Accessible Is Online Information Literacy Instruction?, Vincent Larkin

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Universal design for learning and accessibility have been an ongoing concern for our websites, library guides, databases, and other information literacy tools in recent years. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020 and the shift to remote learning at many educational institutions, for most of us this has meant that online information literacy instruction has increased dramatically and increased our use of and reliance on video-conferencing or other virtual platforms. Projecting to the post-COVID world, for most of us there will likely be a return to in-person instruction in some capacity, but it also seems likely that …

Three's Company: Collaborative Instructional Design On A Librarian-Instructor Team, Brittany L. O'Neill, Allen Leblanc, Deirdre Larsen Mar 2021

Three's Company: Collaborative Instructional Design On A Librarian-Instructor Team, Brittany L. O'Neill, Allen Leblanc, Deirdre Larsen

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

This session will describe a unique collaboration that resulted in development of a strategic research assignment design supported by relevant information literacy sessions. This effort stems from an existing relationship between research librarians and an instructor who was previously a graduate assistant in Research & Instruction Services and became an instructor of a general education course in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Through this collective, a synergistic arrangement developed where librarians contribute to research assignment design and the instructor contributes to developing the information literacy sessions to prepare students for finding, evaluating, and understanding relevant scholarly articles early in their college …

Test-Driving The Pilot: Experiences Creating And Using A Digital Information Literacy Course, Anne Barnhart, Melanie Lewis, Maurine Parker

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

In Spring and Summer 2020 librarians at a mid-size university created online information literacy course modules with auto-graded content. These digital learning objects were designed to be used as graded content within courses across disciplines. In Fall 2020, the first iteration of the online course was piloted in several courses ranging from second-year undergraduates to first-year graduate students. One of the courses that participated in the pilot was a graduate-level course in the media specialist program. These students used the information literacy course both as a way to learn how to use the library and as a learning object for …

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

While the Covid-19 pandemic has brought many challenges to information literacy instruction, it has also provided opportunities to find unique ways to use digital tools to showcase student learning. One such virtual learning opportunity was the International Studies Poster Gallery, a collaborative effort between the Paul Meek Library and College of Business and Global Affairs at the University of Tennessee at Martin. This Poster Gallery built on an in-person event from the previous year to move the student poster presentations into a virtual space. Senior students studying International Studies spent the semester researching their topics, and then presented their poster …

Keeping Up With The Research Needs Of Students: Librarian-Led Information Literacy Instruction In Pre-Health Writing Courses, Beth Nardella, Jennifer Monnin Mar 2021

Keeping Up With The Research Needs Of Students: Librarian-Led Information Literacy Instruction In Pre-Health Writing Courses, Beth Nardella, Jennifer Monnin

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Despite the high-achieving nature of many undergraduate students who would like a career in the health professions after completing their education, pre-health students often struggle with information literacy. The discipline-specific databases and unfamiliar citation formats offer new challenges, even for upper-level students who have nearly completed a 4-year degree. The Health Sciences Library is often a place where pre-health students find a quiet place to study alongside med students, but until their third-year science writing course, they may not have considered the Library’s primary purpose. For these students, a traditional librarian-led demonstration of relevant subject databases, citation managers, and library …

Bridging The Skills Gap: A Boot Camp For Graduate Students, Juliet T. Rumble, Adelia B. Grabowsky, Elizabeth J. Weisbrod, Timothy Dodge

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Graduate students have information literacy needs that are distinct from those of undergraduates and faculty. As they prepare for academic and professional careers, graduate students must acquire skills needed to conduct scholarly research; organize and work with information sources; and effectively communicate research findings. These competencies are often not addressed by the curricular content of their graduate programs. To help bridge this gap, library faculty at a public land grant university organized a one-day research skills boot camp. The boot camp’s workshops include sessions on locating scholarly sources, writing literature reviews, organizing citations, managing data, creating engaging presentations, and increasing …

Scalable And Sustainable: Building A Flexible Library Instruction Team To Handle Whatever The Future May Hold, Crystal Goldman, Amanda Roth, Timothy Chu, Dominique Turnbow

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

While academic librarians constantly work to address the changing needs of higher education, SARS-CoV-2 illustrates how quickly priorities and needs may shift. During the 2020 spring term, the halting of in-person instruction meant many libraries had to use stop-gap measures to provide basic levels of instruction service. No one would claim that this was an ideal way to transition to online instruction, but it became necessary in these unprecedented times. A large number of webinars and online trainings were offered to help librarians make this transition, and many understandably emphasized a “good enough” or “do the best you can” approach. …

Navigating The Online Tutorial Frontier: From Design To Deployment & Beyond, Samantha Harlow, Rachel Olsen, Natalie Haber, Renae Watson

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

As we all have learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, online teaching is a vital part of creating an open future of learning environments in higher education. Asynchronous online information literacy tutorials can engage and support online and face-to-face library users, and the planning and design process can take many forms. Librarians do not have to be instructional designers, have funding, or be accessibility experts to create engaging, online research tutorials. In this session, a panel of academic and online learning librarians from across the country will discuss creating tutorials with a variety of tools, budgets, and timelines. An Unconventional Union: Promoting Information Literacy Through Assessment, Talia R. Nadir, Erika Scheurer Dr.

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

This year, as a result of a long core curriculum revision process, Information Literacy (IL) finally, for the first time, has been included in our university’s curriculum.

However, whereas most IL programs are delivered to students either in discrete IL courses or through IL-flagged content courses (in either the core curriculum, the major, or both), we had to settle for something different: the inclusion of IL learning objectives in our new curriculum is driven entirely by university assessment.

The Office of Accreditation and Assessment, in collaboration with academic departments and the Information and Research Literacy Implementation Committee identified four learning …
