This article discusses a project that took an early archival manuscript collection that was poorly described and catalogued, and underused and revitalized it (in a sense recovered a lost collection) by re-describing it and digitizing material from the collection for better (new) public access.

This article explores how Methodist ministers, particularly Richmond Christian Advocate editor Rev. James A. Duncan, justified their support of the Confederacy and slavery. Also discussed is the Address to Christians Throughout the World, written by Duncan and signed by ministers of various denominations. It was billed as the "Christian response" to Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.

Treasure Hunt Without A Map: Archival Research At The University Of Pennsylvania, Meghan Strong

English and Creative Writing Independent Study Projects

Under the supervision of Meredith Goldsmith in the English Department, I spent this semester developing archival research projects for lower level students in the humanities. My project corresponded with the aims of the Council for Undergraduate Research, which works to develop undergraduate research skills throughout the disciplines. The Kislak Center is a nearby resource that has the potential to provide students with opportunities to develop crucial research skills while discovering little pieces of history that are hidden away in the archives. The final exercises presented here focus on the subjects of Walt Whitman, Marian Anderson, and Michel de Montaigne.

The Civil War is a topic that is taught at the middle school level. However, teachers are not necessarily teaching from both the Northern and Southern perspectives. They are also not always looking at the causes of the Civil War beyond slavery. The Baduys are rice farming communities who rely on nature and the forest. Therefore, they keep and maintain their forests through customs and cultural practices. Dudungusan is preserved forest, prohibited for cultivation. Garapan is the land that can be processed into fields (huma), following the needs and rules of cultivation. The paper analyzes the cultural interaction in mixed marriage of Indian national who live in Jakarta with Indonesian in the more penetrating globalization process in Asia in the 21st century. The research aims to examine the binding of two cultures tied in the knot in the marriage institution, its problem and negotiation. The qualitative methods used here is conducted through questionnaire and direct interview and through the social media.
