Where Is The Evidence? Realising The Value Of Grey Literature For Public Policy And Practice, Amanda Lawrence, John Houghton, Julian Thomas, Paul R. Weldon Nov 2014

Where Is The Evidence? Realising The Value Of Grey Literature For Public Policy And Practice, Amanda Lawrence, John Houghton, Julian Thomas, Paul R. Weldon

Higher education research

The internet has profoundly changed how we produce, use and collect research and information for public policy and practice, with grey literature playing an increasingly important role. The authors argue that grey literature (i.e. materials produced and published by organisations without recourse to the commercial or scholarly publishing industry) is a key part of the evidence produced and used for public policy and practice. Through surveys of users, producing organisations and collecting services, a detailed picture is provided of the importance and economic value of grey literature. However, finding and accessing policy information is a time-consuming task made harder by …

Learning Showcase 2014

The Franklin University Nationwide Library (FUNL) has long been considered a significant contributing resource to our university community. Yet, in spite of our high level of professional competence and credibility, we are reticent to “tell our story” or to promote to others the list of services we provide. This reluctance is rooted in the professional academic preparation and service ethic that characterizes librarianship.

Compelling contemporary trends in higher education mandate that all academic programs provide robust performance evaluation and verified and validated measures of Return on Investment (ROI). ROI is a technique for quantifying the extent to which investment in …

Beyond Library Resources: How To Implement Integrated Learning Across The Curriculum With Information Literacy Components Using Hybrid Delivery, Bernadette Maria Lopez-Fitzsimmons Oct 2014

Beyond Library Resources: How To Implement Integrated Learning Across The Curriculum With Information Literacy Components Using Hybrid Delivery, Bernadette Maria Lopez-Fitzsimmons

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

As an academic librarian at Manhattan College, Riverdale, New York, I collaborate with teaching faculty and academic support centers on campus to provide holistic support to students. In the last year a cross collegial group including teaching faculty, library faculty and Instructional Designers has been created to explore ways in which to provide a “flexible structure” in curriculum across disciplines (e.g., Arts, Science, Engineering, Education, Information Literacy, etc.). Two instructional designers and a faculty member from the English Department lead the monthly in person workshops. After each workshop, scholarly and professional articles are posted in Moodle for all participants to …

Spanning Boundaries To Identify Archival Literacy Competencies, Sharon A. Weiner, Sammie L. Morris, Lawrence J. Mykytiuk

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

This paper is a report of a collaborative research project that identified the competencies undergraduate history majors should have related to finding and using archival materials. The boundary-spanning collaboration involved archivists, librarians, and history faculty.

Historians have long relied upon archives as essential source material, and recent studies confirmed the continued significance of archives to research in this field. However, there is no detailed listing of the archival research competencies that college history students should attain. Without a clearly defined list upon which history faculty, archivists, and library liaisons to history departments agree, teaching about archives research is difficult and …

Report: Sails Test Executive Summary 2014, Veronica A. Wells

University Libraries Librarian and Staff Articles and Papers

Information literacy is a set of skills that includes recognizing an information need, locating and retrieving the needed information, analyzing the information, and using the information for a specific task. As sources for information continue to expand, students need to develop these skills so that they not only succeed in their professional careers, but also make well-informed decisions in their day-to-day lives. Information literacy has been identified as an important skill set by faculty of all disciplines, administrators, and accrediting agencies. Therefore, the University Library is exploring ways to assess these skills, which will allow departments and programs the ability …

Using Outreach To Inform, Maintain And Evaluate Your Collection [Presentation Slides], Kiyomi D. Deards Aug 2014

Using Outreach To Inform, Maintain And Evaluate Your Collection [Presentation Slides], Kiyomi D. Deards

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Presentations

Increasing responsibilities, coupled with larger student bodies and corresponding increases in teaching and research faculty and staff, have made it difficult for many librarians and information professionals to spend time on collection development. This presentation will demonstrate how both formal and informal outreach efforts can inform collection development of Chemistry resources, the evaluation of existing resources, and guide collection maintenance efforts.
