The use of Clickers as a tool for library instruction has been growing in popularity because library instructors view this technology as a mechanism to foster interactivity within library instruction sessions in order to increase overall student engagement. However, a newly emerging area of interest for library instructors is the use of Clickers as a tool for library instruction assessment. This paper posits some of the viewpoints of various instructors using Clickers including the viewpoints of library instructors. The central question considered in this paper is whether Clickers are an effective and feasible tool for library instruction assessment. This examination …

Success Factors And Strategic Planning: Rebuilding An Academic Library Digitization Program, Cory K. Lampert, Jason Vaughan
Library Faculty Research
This paper discusses a dual approach of case study and research survey to investigate the complex factors in sustaining academic library digitization programs. The case study involves the background of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Libraries’ digitization program and elaborates on the authors’ efforts to gain staff support for this program. A related survey was administered to all Association of Research Libraries (ARL) members, seeking to collect baseline data on their digital collections, understand their respective administrative frameworks, and to gather feedback on both negative obstacles and positive inputs affecting their success. Results from the survey, combined with …

Delivery To The Sharp End Of The Spear: Responding To The Need For Library Support To The Deployed And Downrange Military Community, Edward Murphy
Delivery To The Sharp End Of The Spear: Responding To The Need For Library Support To The Deployed And Downrange Military Community, Edward Murphy
Staff Works - Hunt Library
Libraries that support military patrons often face unique challenges. One of the most traumatic is the temporary transfer, or sudden deployment of members of the university community, often in the middle of an academic term, sometimes without notice or adequate preparation time. Not too long ago such an event would almost certainly have interrupted if not altogether halted students’ academic progress until they could return to the parent institution. Technology now in place has allowed many of these students to continue their education regardless of their physical locations, and libraries will have to improvise with regard to the delivery of …
Teaching And Learning In Second Life: A Pilot Study, Anamika Dasgupta
Teaching And Learning In Second Life: A Pilot Study, Anamika Dasgupta
Faculty and Staff Publications
Second Life (SL) is a 3-D virtual online environment that was first released in 2003 by Linden Lab. Educators speculate that it has the ability to support kinesthetic and audio-visual styles. Many universities and colleges have built their teaching campuses in SL in order to experiment with teaching and learning activities in SL. In this study, data were collected from 16 students to evaluate how students respond to the various communication modes available in SL, how students perceive the manipulation of in-world movement, navigation, and action affordances in SL, and how students perceive using a virtual environment to attain learning …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The intent of the study was to understand the changes that have occurred over the last 25 years in library programs as far as enrollment and diversity of students, number and ethnicity of the faculty, program income and expenses, cost of attendance, and scholarship and fellowship aid, in an effort to better understand library programs granting the MLIS degree. The study also endeavored to identify institutional factors associated with the retention and productivity rates of White students and students of color in schools of library and information science. During the period studied, the proportional representation of White students decreased. For …

This article explores the authors work with a group of African American youth in an after school community literacy program. The authors examine how these youth used a set of Internet-based technology tools to evaluate whether or not a group of colleges would affirm their cultural identity and help them succeed if they attended these institutions.
