3-D Printing, Copyright, And Fair Use: What Should We Know?, Posie Aagaard, Michael A. Kolitsky Phd
Charleston Library Conference
If the library is more than its collection, then use of 3-D printing to create knowledge is a good fit—but 3-D printing in library makerspaces can also provide greater access to collections by transforming 2-D images into 3-D tactile informational objects for use by blind or visually impaired patrons.
Will new negotiations between libraries and publishers of journals, images, maps, and other visual resources now include access to files for 3-D printing tactile objects for on-demand creation of 3-D prints for tactile use? Is a 3-D print of a 2-D photo or digital image a derivative work? Will the treaty …

Libraries Respond To Mobile Ubiquity: Research And Assessment Of Mobile Device Usage Trends For Academic And Medical Libraries, Megan M. Hurst, Eleanor I. Cook, J. Michael Lindsay, Martha F. Earl
Charleston Library Conference
The authors consider trends in mobile device usage for the Internet as a whole, for EBSCO Discovery Service across all client libraries, and at two specific libraries: Preston Medical Library, serving the University of Tennessee (UT) Graduate School of Medicine and UT Medical Center, and the Joyner Library at East Carolina University, serving students and faculty on the main campus. Librarians at Preston Medical Library conducted a survey to determine which mobile devices, platforms, and apps were used by their patrons in 2012. East Carolina University piloted an iPad and e-reader lending program in 2010–2011. The results of each are …

Students’ Digital Photography Behaviors During A Multiday Environmental Science Field Trip And Their Recollections Of Photographed Science Content, Victor R. Lee
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
Taking photographs to document the experiences of an educational field trip is becoming a common activity for teachers and students alike. Considering the regular creation of photographic artifacts, our goal in this paper is to explore students’ picture taking behavior and their recollections of science content associated with their photographs. In this study, we partnered with a class of fifth-grade students in the United States and provided each student with a digital camera to document their experiences during an environmental science field trip at a national park. We report the frequency of photography behaviors according to which activities were most …

Hash Marks To Hashtags; Turning Statistics Into Strategic Value Statements, Melissa Jadlos, Christina Hillman
Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications
The poster will describe an innovative method for tracking library statistics and mapping them to Strategic Plans and Learning Goals. In addition to standard library statistics, previously untracked contributions are documented, such as internal projects and professional development. Using Google Forms, library interactions are collected in one place and turned into value statements. Using Twitter, the library is able to connect these value statements to the library strategic plan by creating a hashtag for each strategic goal. For example: Librarians spend over 200 hours in one-on-one research consultations #laverylearn
Assessment Of First-Year Composition Students' Information Literacy Skills, Erin E. Rinto
Assessment Of First-Year Composition Students' Information Literacy Skills, Erin E. Rinto
Lied Library Open House for the 2014 American Library Association Conference
One of the ways we have been assessing the information literacy skills of our first year students is through developing and applying rubrics to a sample of annotated bibliography projects from the required English Composition course at UNLV. The annotated bibliography assignment consists of a paper proposal and the annotations for 5 sources the student plans on using in their final research paper. The "source evaluation rubric" was applied to each individual annotation (totaling 1358 annotations) and the rubric examined the extent to which students were using the evaluative criteria of currency, relevance, and authority when selecting and evaluating an …

Curriculum Mapping At Unlv Libraries: Strategic Integration Of Library Instruction, Nancy E. Fawley
Curriculum Mapping At Unlv Libraries: Strategic Integration Of Library Instruction, Nancy E. Fawley
Lied Library Open House for the 2014 American Library Association Conference
Curriculum mapping is a strategy to integrate information literacy into the undergraduate curriculum by identifying key courses within the disciplines for targeted, library instruction.
Librarians identify high impact, beginning, middle and end-level courses within their disciplines. These may or may not be courses they currently work with.
Information competencies are introduced at a beginning level, then reinforced (mid-level) and enhanced (end) throughout a student’s academic career in an intentionally scaffolded manner. Assessment strategies are included the map, as well.
Librarians use curriculum maps to inform decisions on courses and content taught so instruction efforts are not duplicated.

Over the past eight years, the UNLV Libraries have led and contributed to campus initiatives to revise the undergraduate curriculum and student learning outcomes at UNLV. Through formal and informal leadership roles, librarians helped to create the University Undergraduate Learning Outcomes (UULOs) in the areas of Intellectual Breadth and Lifelong Learning, Communication, Inquiry and Critical Thinking, Global/Multicultural Knowledge and Awareness, and Citizenship and Ethics and a revised model for general education.
In Fall 2011, the Faculty Senate approved a vertical pathway of key courses, which serve to integrate and assess the UULOs from a student’s first year of college through …

Understanding The First Year Experience: An Avenue To Explore Trends In Higher Education (Keynote), Colleen Boff
University Libraries Faculty Publications
Regular examination of the issues and research related to the First Year Experience (FYE) is a priority for most administrators in higher education. A great deal of time, energy, funding and research are funneled into programs for first year students as a means to recruit and retain students in an increasingly tight market. As a consequence, there is much librarians can learn from the examination of these efforts made nationwide. Whether a librarian works exclusively with first year students, upper division students, graduate students or behind the scenes in technical services, paying attention to FYE developments is critical to speaking …

Current Issues in Emerging eLearning
This qualitative, ethnographic case study investigates digital literacy practices and perceptions of students at an urban public high school in the Boston metropolitan area comprising a racially, ethnically, linguistically, and economically diverse student body, an under-studied demographic. The study compares in-school and out-of-school literacy practices and posits the role schools might play in preparing learners. The study examines digital literacy practices among student based on information gathered through focus groups, survey methods, and interviews. Three controlling questions guided the study:
- What digital literacy practices are students in Washington High School engaging in outside of school?
- What purposes do these youth …

Library Portal 2.0: The Social Research Management System, Apostolos Koutropoulos
Current Issues in Emerging eLearning
Library 2.0 (L2) has been discussed in depth in library circles in recent years. This article looks at L2 initiatives and technology implementation with regard to L2 and proposes a reboot, repositioning the library portal as a Social Research Management System (SRMS). This SRMS adheres to the L2 principles of purposeful, user-driven, library services. The SRMS is envisioned as the center of academic research and activity at universities, not as a peripheral tool. Creating a new generation library portal (the SRMS) is a group endeavor, thus by utilizing both on-campus and peer resources, the realization of the faceted, modularized, SRMS …

Preparing Librarians To Be Campus Leaders Through Mapping And Integrating Information Literacy Into Curriculum, Sharon A. Weiner, Li Wang
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
Curriculum mapping is a process by which curricula are methodically examined to determine where information literacy (IL) capabilities are, or should be taught during formal coursework. Curriculum integration is the process of intentionally integrating IL capability at the points in coursework when students need to master those capabilities and competencies. During this session, librarians will develop an understanding of curriculum mapping and how to integrate IL in curricula. This knowledge prepares librarians for campus leadership, since the curriculum is the primary focus of teaching and learning and affects the entire campus.
The curriculum in higher education can be viewed as: …

Merced College has a number of courses being taught on line and that the number continues to grow. The college is currently implementing online courses that meet the requirements of California SB520, passed in May of 2013, requiring all California students to have access to online classes at any California community college. This applies only if the classes they need are not available at their home institution. Added to this is the requirement from the accrediting agency for California Community Colleges that all students, both distance and face-to-face have equal access to library resources. The Academic Library And High-Impact Practices For Student Retention: Perspectives Of Library Deans, Adam L. Murray
The Academic Library And High-Impact Practices For Student Retention: Perspectives Of Library Deans, Adam L. Murray
Dissertations
Dramatic declines in state appropriations for postsecondary education, the rise of performance-based funding models, and limitations on tuition increases have resulted in a focus on student retention as a matter of importance to institutions of higher education. Concomitantly, academic libraries face changes in service models brought about by technology and the rising costs of providing access to an ever-expanding field of literature required by academic programs and faculty. The value proposition of the academic library is reduced in the face of budget interests that impact recruitment and retention. Many researchers and university leaders have called on academic libraries to develop …

Textbook Alternatives: Library Supported Options For Students And Faculty, Michele D. Behr, Julie Hayward
University Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations
The issue of course textbooks continues to be a challenge in higher education. For students the primary concern is the skyrocketing costs: spending several hundred dollars for required textbooks per semester at a time when tuition and fees continue to rise. Consequently, students are borrowing, renting or simply forgoing purchasing textbooks to alleviate some of the financial burden. For those students who are unable to purchase textbooks, are they still receiving the same high quality education? Although faculty members empathize with students’ frustrations concerning textbook prices, they may not be aware of the alternative resources and services offered by the …
