Embracing Geek Culture In Undergraduate Library Instruction: The Til Subreddit For Resource Evaluation And Qualitative Assessment, Michelle Gibeault Feb 2016

Embracing Geek Culture In Undergraduate Library Instruction: The Til Subreddit For Resource Evaluation And Qualitative Assessment, Michelle Gibeault

University Libraries Faculty Publications and Presentations

A case study of a library instruction teaching experiment using the “Today I Learned” forum on the website reddit.com, this article addresses teaching and assessment methods intended to promote self-monitoring in both the library instructor and student. After experimenting in the context of one-shot, lower-division, library instruction sessions, the TIL structure demonstrated strong opportunities for (a) eliciting declarative feedback from students about what they learn in library instruction sessions, (b) discussing how appropriate resource selection can effectively support a claim, and (c) modeling behaviors of lifelong learning while introducing unfamiliar students to an online forum founded in that spirit.

Awareness And Perception Of Plagiarism Of Postgraduate Students In Selected Universities In Ogun State, Nigeria., Jerome Idiegbeyan-Ose, Christopher Nkiko, Ifeakachuku Osinulu

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Plagiarism undoubtedly constitutes a seemingly imperceptible threat to the growth of genuine global scholarship. The understanding of various perspectives of the phenomenon is critical to finding a lasting solution. It is against this background therefore, that the study investigated awareness and perception of plagiarism of postgraduate students in selected Universities in Ogun State Nigeria. Survey research design was used while adopting stratified and random sampling methods to select 338 respondents from federal, state and private Universities for the study. The findings revealed average level of awareness of plagiarism among postgraduate students, level of training influenced their level of awareness; pressure …

Coding By Choice: A Transitional Analysis Of Social Participation Patterns And Programming Contributions In The Online Scratch Community, Deborah A. Fields, Yasmin B. Kafai, Michael T. Giang

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

While massive online communities have drawn the attention of researchers and educators on their potential to support active collaborative work, knowledge sharing, and user-generated content, few studies examine participation in these communities at scale. The little research that does exist attends almost solely to adults rather than communities to support youths’ learning and identity development. In this chapter, we tackle two challenges related to understanding social practices that support learning in massive social networking forums where users engage in design. We examined a youth programmer community, called Scratch.mit.edu, that garners the voluntary participation of millions of young people worldwide. We …

Crowdsourcing The Curriculum: Redefining E-Learning Practices Through Peer-Generated Approaches, Drew Paulin, Caroline Haythornthwaite Feb 2016

Crowdsourcing The Curriculum: Redefining E-Learning Practices Through Peer-Generated Approaches, Drew Paulin, Caroline Haythornthwaite

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Inclusion of open resources that employ a peer-generated approach is changing who learns what, from whom, and via what means. With these changes, there is a shift in responsibilities from the course designer to motivated and self-directed learner-participants. While much research on e-learning has addressed challenges of creating and sustaining participatory environments, the development of massive open online courses calls for new approaches that go beyond the existing research on participatory environments in institutionally defined classes. We decenter institutionally defined classes and broaden the discussion to the literature on the creation of open virtual communities and the operation of open …

Imls Sparks Ignite Il Framework Cooperative Project Grant Proposal, Jessame Ferguson

IMLS SPARKS Ignite IL Framework Cooperative Project for At-Risk Student Success in Smaller Colleges

This is the narrative written for the IMLS Sparks IL Framework Cooperative Project grant proposal. Through a partnership of five institutions led by McDaniel College, including Goucher College, Ursinus College, Washington College, and Washington & Jefferson College, we propose to develop best practices for ensuring information literacy education programs at smaller institutions support success and persistence of at-risk students in their critical first-year. We will use the newly adopted Association of College & Research Libraries Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education to develop and test new assessment methodologies and engaging educational experiences for first-year students. The project will take …

Spectators Or Patriots? Citizens In The Information Age, Amrita Dhawan Feb 2016

Spectators Or Patriots? Citizens In The Information Age, Amrita Dhawan

Publications and Research

In theory, a strong democracy rests on robust citizen participation. The practice in most democracies is quite different. This gap presents a challenge, which can be narrowed by augmenting civic education to bring it up to date with the current information environment and thus give citizens the opportunity to participate. Robert Dahl’s work on democracy provides a model that looks at this problem structurally. He writes about the ideals and the actual institutions necessary for a democracy and if we situate his model in the modern information environment we get a better idea of how to improve civic education. Successful …

Planning And The Future Of The Academic Library: An Annotated Bibliography, Gregory Smith

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Academic libraries have changed significantly in recent years. At least to some extent, their evolution has been the product of planning rather than passive acceptance of, or reactive response to, environmental conditions. This document introduces readers to nearly 20 sources—representing the fields of business, higher education, and library/information science—that convey important insights into library planning. Academic library planning increasingly reflects a context in which educational and other institutions are held accountable for the outcomes of their decisions. Planning presumes the existence of useful data streams. Successful implementation of a strategic plan entails attention to organizational development and budget planning. Library …
