The purpose of our new Roots and Seeds feature is to provide an open-access space to archive first-hand accounts of QL activities that have preceded our journal (2008). The first two contributions in the collection appeared last issue: Linda Sons on the making of what has come to be known as the 1994 Sons Report (Mathematics Association of America), and Dorothy Wallace on her path to the Quantitative Literacy Design Team for Mathematics and Democracy (2001), and the questions that bedeviled them then – and us now. In this issue, we get Rick Gillman’s account of how the committee that …

The adoption of the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education by the Association of College & Research Libraries’ (ACRL) executive board in January 2016 motivated library instruction programs to deeply explore the Framework and carefully evaluate its impact on a local level. A coordinator of library instruction and the director of a Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) used Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) as a method to investigate designing learning outcomes for a library instruction program that incorporates the ACRL Framework. The authors trace the design process followed by Kimbel Library and the Center for Teaching Excellence …

Mapping The Literature Of Dental Hygiene: An Update, Carol L. Watwood, Terry Dean
DLPS Faculty Publications
Objective: This study updates Haaland’s 1999 dental hygiene mapping study. By identifying core journals and estimating database coverage, it characterizes changes in dental hygiene research and aids librarians in collection development and user education.
Method: Cited references from a three-year (2015–2017) sample of core dental hygiene journals were collected, categorized into five formats, and analyzed by format and publication year according to Bradford’s Law of Scattering. CINAHL Complete, MEDLINE, and EMBASE were surveyed to determine the indexing coverage of cited journals.
Results: The number of cited journal titles increased from 389 in 1999 to 1,675 in 2018. Core Zone 1 …

Theory And The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning: Inquiry And Practice With Intention, Nancy L. Chick
Theory And The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning: Inquiry And Practice With Intention, Nancy L. Chick
Faculty Publications
Theory in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) is the conceptual basis for the practice of SoTL—or, more precisely, the conceptual bases for the practices of SoTL—as well as the bodies of knowledge, methodological assumptions, and explanations of phenomena that are deployed (explicitly or implicitly) from a range of contexts within SoTL. Put another way, theory is thinking on a meta level, a metacognitive move in which practitioners become aware, critical, and intentional of how and why they are doing their practice. It involves taking stock of the existing conversations to move beyond definitions, to critically evaluate gaps and …

Stages Of Organisational Commitment Among Librarians In University Libraries In South-South, Nigeria, Iwat Udofia Dr., Ahiaoma Ibegwam
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
ABSTRACT
Introduction: Visits to some university libraries, backed by evidence from previous research, reveal that librarians experience low levels commitment as reflected in the high rates of turnover and absenteeism. This seems prevalent at a time Nigeria as a country is grappling with harsh economic realities, when increased commitment and extra effort are being expected of all employees to boost performance and improve service delivery. Thus, the pursuit of a deeper understanding of the means by which commitment develops is critical and warrants empirical investigation. This study, therefore, is to determine the levels of organisational commitment among librarians in university …

Organizational Learning In Libraries At For-Profit Colleges And Universities, Julie Evener
Organizational Learning In Libraries At For-Profit Colleges And Universities, Julie Evener
Education Collection
Despite successful application of organizational learning to enhance services in academic libraries, little is known about organizational learning in libraries of for-profit colleges and universities (FPCUs). A quantitative online survey, followed by qualitative interviews, served to assess and explore the use of organizational learning in libraries at FPCUs. Data reflected medium to high levels of organizational learning in the libraries studied, as well as a negative relationship between organizational learning and number of students enrolled. Common themes in the interview responses included external pressures from the FPCUs making it more difficult to implement organizational learning, and the importance of communication. …

The Potential Of Industry Standards In Undergraduate Education, Heather A. Howard, Margaret Phillips, Alyson Vaaler, David Hubbard
The Potential Of Industry Standards In Undergraduate Education, Heather A. Howard, Margaret Phillips, Alyson Vaaler, David Hubbard
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
Industry standards have a significant impact on business as a means to eliminate waste, reduce costs, market products (e.g., for quality, safety, interoperability) and lessen liability (Thompson, 2011). Consequently, an understanding and the ability to use standards, agreed upon practices among interested or vested parties, is a critical workplace competency for those engaged in business and industry. To have a workforce competent in the use of standards, higher education curricula must be developed to integrate standards education at appropriate points within the curriculum. Despite the importance of standards, they are not universally integrated into the college and university curricula. Given …

Cloud Computing Adoption In Higher Education: A Comparative Study Between Public And Private Universities In Sub Saharan Africa, Valentina Arkorful
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Cloud computing is fast gaining a significant ground as a solution to offer institutions with competitive advantage compared to the old traditional Technology. Despite the potential benefits that is associated with cloud computing which includes reduction of total costs of acquisition or ownership (TCO) of hardware, software and skilled resources, the adoption level of cloud services is still very low in higher institutions of learning due to security issues, especially trust issues which remain a major concern over cloud solutions. The study was carried out in some selected public and private universities in sub Saharan Africa to determine the reason …
