"In recent years, innovation, entrepreneurship, and globalization have become popular concepts in relation to technology design. While some major corporations and other entities continue pushing for globalization through the design and dissemination of digital technologies, researchers also caution against the biases and oppression that can be embedded in US culture’s 'near-ubiquitous use of algorithmically driven software.'1 Countering some previously established orientations to globalization and entrepreneurship, this chapter highlights the importance of building technological innovation with (rather than just for or about) historically, structurally, and systematically marginalized and underrepresented communities. Introducing Seamlessaccess.Org: Delivering A Simpler, Privacy-Preserving Access Experience, John W. Felts, Tim Lloyd, Emily Singley

Charleston Library Conference

Managing access to subscribed services in an era of abundance is a major challenge for libraries. Users have come to expect a seamless, personalized experience on their mobile devices, but traditional approaches to access management force librarians to choose between the anonymous ease of onsite IP authentication or the access friction experienced by users authenticating across multiple resources with Single Sign-On. Building on the work of the RA21 initiative, a recent NISO Recommended Practice on Improved Access to Institutionally Provided Information Resources charts a way forward. It will enable libraries to provide seamless, privacy-preserving and one-click access to its subscribed …

Reconsidering Literacy, Audrey Powers, Marc Powers Oct 2020

Reconsidering Literacy, Audrey Powers, Marc Powers

Charleston Library Conference

Literacy, until recently, was defined as the ability to read printed text and to understand the nuances of both the form and content of that printed text. More recently there has been a focus on subsets of literacy – data literacy, numeracy, visual literacy, media literacy, etc. – that recognizes the means of communicating ideas and facts are not limited to the printed text and that there are multiple means which may be more powerful ways of communicating in our world. In recent years, higher education has been redefining what it means to be educated – from a focus on …

How Libraries Can Increase The Number Of Opportunities For Students To Engage In High Impact Practices On Their Campus, Mark Dahl Oct 2020

How Libraries Can Increase The Number Of Opportunities For Students To Engage In High Impact Practices On Their Campus, Mark Dahl

High-Impact Practices in Academic Libraries

Small liberal arts colleges often showcase high impact practices like student-faculty research and service learning on their websites. But too often these opportunities are limited to only a few exceptional students on a given campus. Libraries can help provide their communities with more opportunities for students to engage in high impact practices through practicums. Lewis & Clark’s Watzek Library has offered practicums in exhibit creation, software development, archival processing, oral history, data curation and other activities. The practicums are faculty-sponsored and library-led and give the student a mentored practical and intellectual experience. Depending on the practicum, they can involve writing, …

In his description of this HIP, author George Kuh states that “the effectiveness of this [writing] practice has led to parallel efforts in such areas as information literacy.” Here is the point at which librarians at SPU have stepped in to craft an innovative campus partnership, realigning our services to bring optimum success to our students. In collaboration with the SPU Writing Program, and inspired by another institution in the region, the SPU Library has opened the Research, Reading & Writing Studio. …

Service Learning As The Foundation For An Undergraduate Librarian-Taught Information And Society Course, Kristen Hoffman, Liz Gruchala-Gilbert

High-Impact Practices in Academic Libraries

Service-Learning is an experiential educational practice where students participate in a service project tied closely with course concepts. In Spring of 2019, the presenters co-taught a course as part of the SPU Library’s Information Studies minor. This course utilized service-learning as a framework to understand the ways in which information (especially access to information and information technologies) affects those living in the local Seattle area. In partnership with the City of Seattle, students read and scored grant applications from local organizations working on digital equity projects. In response to their service, students wrote reflection essays documenting their experience and their …

The Engaged Library: High-Impact Educational Practices In Academic Libraries, Joan Ruelle, Deandra Little

High-Impact Practices in Academic Libraries

Keynote address:

High-impact educational practices (HIPs)—as identified by George Kuh and the Association of American Colleges & Universities (2008)—are widely recognized as activities that promote student engagement, student retention, and positive student learning outcomes. How these eleven practices are implemented may vary some, depending on institutional context and priorities, as well as on the learners themselves, but are all meant to create substantive activities that deepen student learning, engagement, and success. A persistent struggle for libraries has been articulating how libraries directly and indirectly contribute to student success, and calls to better measure and articulate the contributions of libraries to …

New Ways Of Teaching Library Service To Immigrant Communities, Ana Ndumu, Michele Villagran

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Outreach to immigrant communities is a long-standing aspect of United States (U.S.) library service. This area of library and information science (LIS) practice is vital given that immigration continues to dominate policy and public discourse. There is a need to advance U.S.- based LIS education so that new library professionals are aware of the sociopolitical implications of engagement with immigrant communities. We introduce a framework to guide instruction on best practices for outreach to immigrant communities within LIS courses. Then we describe how the framework will also inform a self-paced course to welcome immigrant populations into the LIS professions. By …

One Step At A Time: A Case Study Of Incorporating Universal Design For Learning In Library Instruction, Samantha H. Peter, Kristina A. Clement

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, Innovative Pedagogy (2018-2020 archives)

This paper introduces the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), an inclusive pedagogical principle that works to make instruction accessible for all by incorporating different needs of learners into instructional design. This article provides a brief analysis of the literature on UDL within the field of academic libraries and focuses specifically on library instruction. The paper then concludes with a comprehensive case study of the authors’ journey to actively incorporate UDL into their information literacy instruction sessions over a two-semester period, including lessons learned throughout their process.
