Information Literacy In A Post-Truth Era, Catherine Baird, Jonathan Howell Apr 2021

Information Literacy In A Post-Truth Era, Catherine Baird, Jonathan Howell

University Libraries Scholarship and Creative Works

The founders of American democracy believed it could not survive without an “informed citizenry”. What does an informed citizenry look like in today’s world? And what role do we have as educators and students to support it?

First, we look at the significant challenges to institutional and media legitimacy that emerged in the second half of the 20th century, which rightfully called attention to the ways longstanding Western knowledge practices excluded marginalized communities and silenced important histories. We ask about the status of norms and mores in the aftermath of this challenge, in an era often called “post-truth.”

Second, we …

Weeding Into Outreach: A Case Study Using An Urban Community College’S Reserve Collection, Jeffrey Delgado

Urban Library Journal

Urban Community colleges face a unique constraint on students. The price of textbooks has skyrocketed in recent years, forcing our students to incorporate additional expenses in order to gain access to class material. College libraries play a crucial role in facilitating students with access to reserve collections, however, library policies do not always assist students in the most practical way. Using a reserve collection that was overloaded with copies and older editions of popular textbooks titles, this case study illustrates how weeding a reserve collection can facilitate an event where students can take copies of textbooks for themselves. Moreover, this …

Inequitable Impacts Of Textbook Costs At A Small, Private College: Results From A Textbook Survey At Gettysburg College, Sarah Appedu, Mary Elmquist, Janelle Wertzberger, Sharon K. Birch

All Musselman Library Staff Works

Recognizing that higher education settings vary considerably, librarians at Gettysburg College sought to better understand textbook spending behaviors and the effects of costs on our students. We adapted the Florida Virtual Campus 2016 Student Textbook and Course Materials Survey to suit the context of our small, private, liberal arts college. Most students spent $300 in Fall 2019. Financial aid awards did not cover the cost of required books and course materials for most students receiving aid. Negative effects were more pronounced for first-generation students and Pell Grant recipients, who were more likely to not purchase required books, to not register …

Escape The Show And Tell: Engaging Primary Source Literacy Through Immersive Game-Based Instruction, Autumn Johnson, Dawn Nikki Cannon-Rech Apr 2021

Escape The Show And Tell: Engaging Primary Source Literacy Through Immersive Game-Based Instruction, Autumn Johnson, Dawn Nikki Cannon-Rech

University Libraries: Faculty Publications

Instruction using Special Collections and archival resources tends to play a minor role in library instruction programs. Special Collections is more often employed in exhibitions or public forums for lectures, presentations, and academic discussions. Hands-on opportunities to teach with Special Collections, if available, are typically limited to oneshot lecture sessions with a handful of resources specific to a singular course subject or assignment topic. While these “Show and Tell” sessions can be a great way to expose undergraduate students to archival primary sources, they often are used exclusively in history or humanities courses. A more engaging, tactile approach is certainly …

How Accessible Is Online Information Literacy Instruction?, Vincent Larkin Mar 2021

How Accessible Is Online Information Literacy Instruction?, Vincent Larkin

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Universal design for learning and accessibility have been an ongoing concern for our websites, library guides, databases, and other information literacy tools in recent years. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020 and the shift to remote learning at many educational institutions, for most of us this has meant that online information literacy instruction has increased dramatically and increased our use of and reliance on video-conferencing or other virtual platforms. Projecting to the post-COVID world, for most of us there will likely be a return to in-person instruction in some capacity, but it also seems likely that …

Keeping Up With The Research Needs Of Students: Librarian-Led Information Literacy Instruction In Pre-Health Writing Courses, Beth Nardella, Jennifer Monnin

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Despite the high-achieving nature of many undergraduate students who would like a career in the health professions after completing their education, pre-health students often struggle with information literacy. The discipline-specific databases and unfamiliar citation formats offer new challenges, even for upper-level students who have nearly completed a 4-year degree. The Health Sciences Library is often a place where pre-health students find a quiet place to study alongside med students, but until their third-year science writing course, they may not have considered the Library’s primary purpose. For these students, a traditional librarian-led demonstration of relevant subject databases, citation managers, and library …

Scalable And Sustainable: Building A Flexible Library Instruction Team To Handle Whatever The Future May Hold, Crystal Goldman, Amanda Roth, Timothy Chu, Dominique Turnbow

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

While academic librarians constantly work to address the changing needs of higher education, SARS-CoV-2 illustrates how quickly priorities and needs may shift. During the 2020 spring term, the halting of in-person instruction meant many libraries had to use stop-gap measures to provide basic levels of instruction service. No one would claim that this was an ideal way to transition to online instruction, but it became necessary in these unprecedented times. A large number of webinars and online trainings were offered to help librarians make this transition, and many understandably emphasized a “good enough” or “do the best you can” approach. …

An Unconventional Union: Promoting Information Literacy Through Assessment, Talia R. Nadir, Erika Scheurer Dr.

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

This year, as a result of a long core curriculum revision process, Information Literacy (IL) finally, for the first time, has been included in our university’s curriculum.

However, whereas most IL programs are delivered to students either in discrete IL courses or through IL-flagged content courses (in either the core curriculum, the major, or both), we had to settle for something different: the inclusion of IL learning objectives in our new curriculum is driven entirely by university assessment.

The Office of Accreditation and Assessment, in collaboration with academic departments and the Information and Research Literacy Implementation Committee identified four learning …

Digital Research Logs: Free, Easy & Engaging Direct Measures For Assessment Of Information Literacy Outcomes, Bernadette Mirro, Mason Yang

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

  • Join us to learn about how an accidental collaboration turned into an intentionally designed online research log that serves as a direct measure for assessing information literacy outcomes in a freshman level composition class. Using Google Sheets we have created a free CCC licensed research log for use in a synchronous instruction session or paired with digital instructional tutorials in an asynchronous library instruction session. The research log is engaging and intuitive, helps students stay focused on the task and goes beyond the function of a traditional handout to serve as a tool they can use throughout the semester. Also, …
